Saturday's starter in double header

Rochester and Chattanooga have had 6 games in the previous two days leaving 6 pitchers that line up well for Saturday.

Hurlbutt, Slegers, Melville, Romero, Rodriguez and LeBlanc. Romero is on the 40. Turley pitched the 22nd and Gee last pitched on the 14th.

Could it be Romero?

If Gee pitches for Rochester today, perhaps him. It seemed odd that he was sent down unless they wanted him to get work to be ready for a specific date.

But didn't we just send Gee down? Doesn't that mean he can't get called up again for 10 days barring an injury?

26th man.

Generally that is true, but for a double header you are permitted to call up a 26th man and the 10 day rule doesn't apply for that.  He can be called up to pitch as the 26th man.

I would be shocked if it's Romero.  Gee makes the most sense.  Could possibly be Turley too?  Felix Jorge is also an option, but I think quite unlikely given the other options, and his starts don't quite line up.

It's almost certainly going to be someone on the 40-man currently considering that they already seemed unwilling to DFA Turley over Melotakis.

Really disconcerting when they keep starting other teams rejects.

What are the odds of getting even 5 innings out of the guy??

I can see Gee pitching 5 or 6 innings giving up 3 or 4 runs. He has the best resume of the retreads who pitched here this year.

Turley is listed as starter tonight. If his start is shortened (not due to performance), it will be a sign he will be back. There is rain in the forecast in Buffalo today.

Gee has not pitched in two weeks. Did he go to Rochester or did they send him somewhere where rain can sent a possibility?

Selfishly I would be most interested in seeing Romero but I get why it might not be good for him or the Twins.

Gee is slated for ROC tomorrow from what I've seen on Twitter so unless he only throws 50-60 pitches he's probably out.

Also the correct answer is Gimenez.

Turley threw 99 pitches tonight. A good start giving up 3 hits while striking out 6 and walking 2. It doesn't seem like he would be in the plan to start on short rest Saturday.

Gee doesn't seem like a good option either. He hasn't pitched in 2 weeks and throwing anything more than a few innings tomorrow would prevent him from going Saturday. It is hard to imagine he will be ready to throw more than 3-4 innings Saturday if things go well.

what are the Twins plans with a 29 year old Heston?

My God, what have you done?

Santiago should be available after tonight's rain delay

Santiago could be available Saturday, but then Sunday it would be Mejia's turn on short rest. So you would still need another starter Sunday (and then you wouldn't get the benefit of the 26th man).

Basically, you can't start the same 5 guys on normal rest through a doubleheader without any days off on the schedule.

yep, and no matter what your bullpen will be shot, so it would be like cobbling together 2 bullpen games if starting two pitchers back to back on short rest

To be fair, the way Turley's first 3 MLB starts went, I'm not sure we'd notice a difference on short rest. :)

If Gee throws just a couple innings tonight, in preparation for Saturday, that would be poor planning -- in that case, we should have sent him down a few days ago for a proper start, or even skipped calling him up last week.  He wasn't *that* critical of a reinforcement at that time (especially if we finally came to our senses and cut Breslow).

The exciting move would be to bring up Romero or Jorge for spot start and some experience. So, I'm putting my money or Gee or some other pitcher that will lead us to gripe and think "WTF are they doing".

Here's how the Red Wings web site currently lists their probable upcoming starters:

Wednesday: Gee

Thursday: Heston

Friday: Melville

Saturday: Hurlbut

Sunday: Slegers

Although with the insertion of Turley and Gee into their rotation, most everybody is working on extra rest.  So basically anybody after Turley and Gee could make the start Saturday.  There's also Tracy and PIno too, although both have been pretty bad in Rochester so far.  Heston has been pretty bad too.

My reservation with Slegers and possibly even Hurlbut is that the team probably wouldn't want to remove them from the 40-man roster right away, so they could clog it for a little while without contributing much.  And we only have one more doubleheader on the schedule (August 21).  Although maybe Slegers could dial it up a bit as another pen option?

Melville might currently be the "best" available option that we wouldn't be too afraid to DFA soon after.  He had a cup of coffee with the Reds last year too, if they are looking for experience (they seemed to value that in picking up and deploying Tepesch, Wilk, and Heston -- although see how those turned out...).

Long shot, I know, but for the sake of completeness, Chattanooga's web site currently has:

Wednesday: Gonsalves

Thursday: Jorge

Friday: TBD (Romero's turn)

I can't imagine Le Blanc and Derek Rodriguez being factors in this decision.  Likewise Paul Clemens, other than he might fill in for someone else at AA.

It certainly would be fun if they called up Romero for the spot start. He's not ready to go every 5 days in the bigs, but could be sneaky in one start. Gives a preview of a potential bullpen callup later in the year too.

If not him, I'd go Gee.

How do they get into this mess. And look at the starters at Rochester. Geez. Even with Pino on the DL it is starting to look like an Indy league lineup instead of prospects. The Twins will be bring Hughes up for the weekend, and why...for his one inning. They need a legit longman in the pen (shades of Swarzak) and don't have it. That was supposed to be Haley. It could've been Duffey. It certainly is not anyone else they have. They could've, fer sure, used Gee to pitch 3-4 innings yesterday in relief of the rained-on Santiago. These games are important. Or if they aren't, then let's see Romero for a game...give him a taste of his future. Where are the true prospects at Rochester right now?

Gee was pulled after 3 scoreless innings last night, at 47 pitches. Seth's game report says they limited him because of his recent inactivity. Could he still be on the Twins radar for Saturday? Only 2 days rest after 47 pitches might be cutting it close? Otherwise he would also be the most obvious candidate to DFA in favor of a different Rochester starter.
