This pick makes me wonder if Falvey is taking the Cubs approach of "avoid pitchers". Not sure a mid-market team can play that game but whatever, we'll all know in a few years. I don't get riled up about the draft because when you get right down to it, none of us know jack crap about these players.

The Indians managed to put together a good rotation without relying on their top picks to be pitchers.

I'm happy. Lewis was number 2 on my board (after Adell). Definitely a "projection" pick, but there are some numbers on his side- he is extremely young, which is meaningful. He's a UC Irvine commit, which is a lower ranked school and should counter balance his representation somewhat to keep his price down. I think its a decent value pick.

Yeah, my tongue was kinda in my cheek when I wrote that sentence. It's possible to draft position players and flip them for pitchers. Or sign free agents. Or use the international market. Lots of options.

Falvey and Levine pass on pitching and reach for a high school SS. This is the kind of thing that will define their tenure in Minnesota for good or bad.

I'm not sure it's avoiding pitchers per se, so much as valuing the pitchers available in this draft.

Up the middle position players who hit and play defense are what clubs want to build around. Those guys will always have trade value to acquire pitching, if that's what it comes down to.

Damn it. This reminds me of when Mike Tice didn't make a pick for 2 selections. That worked out and we got Kevin Williams. Unfortunately you can't succeed by making bad decisions. This is one right here.

If they were going to go High School I would have gone with Gore.  Either he wouldn't deal or there is something there they don't like.  Never saw Lewis pick coming.  Thought they would go McKay for sure.

While I question the pick, it's not known whether it's a bad decision. Falvine got up close and personal with Greene a few days ago. He has the spreadsheets displaying the numbers on his stuff.

We don't.

That doesn't mean he's right and we're wrong but it does mean any opinion we have is, at best, half-baked.

It looks like we are going to have to trade for pitching if we want more depth there.  We already have a lot infield talent in the system as it is.

This pick was dumb.

Passing on Greene was dumb.

Book it.

Ugh.

Nothing the front office has done has inspired any confidence in me, this might be the worst.

On the plus side, by the time he is ready, Buxton will just about be a free agent....

...so far his future price rates to be quite low.

Joe Kelly hit 102 the other day, and he's not even a good middle reliever. Greene is a good athlete but still, lots of hype. Becoming a frontline MLB starter is about way, way more than velocity.

Yep. It generally raises a guy's floor but after reading that the Twins used Trackman data on Greene and still passed, that raises concerns for me.

I still wanted to see them take Greene but, again, what the hell do I know?

If my reading was correct (help me here), wasn't Greene projected as the #1 SS for a HS player also?

So, he's not coming cheap, either.

Boras always screws us.  This just can't be good.  I hope to heck he becomes an all star but right now I don't see how this helps us in the short term.

Lol interesting with the Lewis pick. I'm not opposed to some deal making in this draft. So let's see what they do with their next two picks today.
