markos Provisional Member Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 This pick makes me wonder if Falvey is taking the Cubs approach of "avoid pitchers". Not sure a mid-market team can play that game but whatever, we'll all know in a few years. I don't get riled up about the draft because when you get right down to it, none of us know jack crap about these players. The Indians managed to put together a good rotation without relying on their top picks to be pitchers. glunn and howieramone2 2
Willihammer Provisional Member Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 I'm happy. Lewis was number 2 on my board (after Adell). Definitely a "projection" pick, but there are some numbers on his side- he is extremely young, which is meaningful. He's a UC Irvine commit, which is a lower ranked school and should counter balance his representation somewhat to keep his price down. I think its a decent value pick. Dozier's Glorious Hair 1

diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 not liking this... he's going to have to be Trout like to justify this pick. They needed pitching and a shot at a good one.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 The Indians managed to put together a good rotation without relying on their top picks to be pitchers.Yeah, my tongue was kinda in my cheek when I wrote that sentence. It's possible to draft position players and flip them for pitchers. Or sign free agents. Or use the international market. Lots of options.
twins_89 Verified Member Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 Falvey and Levine pass on pitching and reach for a high school SS. This is the kind of thing that will define their tenure in Minnesota for good or bad.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 Eric L. from fangraphs says he doesn't have the arm for short stop, or the feet. Nor does he have good power. jimmer 1

I don't get riled up about the draft because when you get right down to it, none of us know jack crap about these players. I'm not sure it's avoiding pitchers per se, so much as valuing the pitchers available in this draft. Up the middle position players who hit and play defense are what clubs want to build around. Those guys will always have trade value to acquire pitching, if that's what it comes down to.
dgwills Provisional Member Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 Damn it. This reminds me of when Mike Tice didn't make a pick for 2 selections. That worked out and we got Kevin Williams. Unfortunately you can't succeed by making bad decisions. This is one right here. sftwinsfan 1
Dman Verified Member Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 If they were going to go High School I would have gone with Gore. Either he wouldn't deal or there is something there they don't like. Never saw Lewis pick coming. Thought they would go McKay for sure. sftwinsfan 1

This is one right here. While I question the pick, it's not known whether it's a bad decision. Falvine got up close and personal with Greene a few days ago. He has the spreadsheets displaying the numbers on his stuff. We don't. That doesn't mean he's right and we're wrong but it does mean any opinion we have is, at best, half-baked. Dman Verified Member Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 It looks like we are going to have to trade for pitching if we want more depth there. We already have a lot infield talent in the system as it is.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 On the plus side, by the time he is ready, Buxton will just about be a free agent....
Willihammer Provisional Member Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 How funny would it be if the Padres took Bubba Thompson here.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 (edited) This pick was dumb. Passing on Greene was dumb. Book it. Ugh. Nothing the front office has done has inspired any confidence in me, this might be the worst. Edited June 12, 2017 by DaveW Vanimal46, jimmer and sftwinsfan 3

drivlikejehu Verified Member Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 Joe Kelly hit 102 the other day, and he's not even a good middle reliever. Greene is a good athlete but still, lots of hype. Becoming a frontline MLB starter is about way, way more than velocity. Dr. Evil, bluechipper, brvama and 1 other 4

It generally raises a guy's floor but after reading that the Twins used Trackman data on Greene and still passed, that raises concerns for me. I still wanted to see them take Greene but, again, what the hell do I know?
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 DISAPPOINTED! That's all I have to say about that. Vanimal46 and sftwinsfan 2
Kwak Verified Member Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 (edited) If my reading was correct (help me here), wasn't Greene projected as the #1 SS for a HS player also? Edited June 12, 2017 by Kwak
Dman Verified Member Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 So, he's not coming cheap, either. Boras always screws us. This just can't be good. I hope to heck he becomes an all star but right now I don't see how this helps us in the short term.
d-mac Verified Member Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 Lol interesting with the Lewis pick. I'm not opposed to some deal making in this draft. So let's see what they do with their next two picks today.
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 Unreal. Opposing fans are mocking the Twins for this one. sftwinsfan 1
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 If my reading was correct (help me here), wasn't Greene projected as the #1 SS for a HS player also? No, he was back half of the first round as a shortstop. Vanimal46, Hosken Bombo Disco and Bob Sacamento 3
Willihammer Provisional Member Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 So, he's not coming cheap, either. Well, its Boras, of course he's the greatest thing since sliced cheese. We'll see what he signs for. I'd guess 6.25 or thereabouts. d-mac and Intramural Legend 2
