If the Twins come out of this offseason with Cobb/Lynn, Odorizzi, Reed, Rodney, Pineda, and Duke... that's an amazing offseason.

Sure, you missed out on Darvish, which kinda sucks, but that's a lot of pitching for not much money.

Agree.

Well if the goal is to how how little we spent per pitcher, I believe the Twins have won that before: 2013.

If the goal is whether we made the rotation good enough we can be a true contender...well, that muddies the water a bit (especially, assuming we get another pitcher, it's Lynn instead of Cobb).

3:23 Is Minnesota still adding players or are they done?

Steve Adams

3:24 I don't feel like they can just add Jake Odorizzi and say their rotation is set now. They're still looking for starters.

Paul Molitor

4:23 I hate to pencil Vargas in at DH after he hasn't grabbed ahold of any of the opportunities I've given him. Is there a better RH bat available that justifies the higher cost?

Steve Adams

4:25 I think they should just sign Logan Morrison, personally. He's hit lefties at an above-average rate over the past two offseasons, and they can grab Napoli or someone as a cheap RH bench bat if they really want a veteran with more of a track record.

Still have Grossman around as well, who didn't hit lefties much last year but has a better track record of doing so

Danny Duffy

4:28 With the Royals now pretty much saying they are fully committed to the rebuild, should teams start calling on me again?

Steve Adams

4:29 I don't think teams should ever have stopped. The Brewers and Twins should be driving Dayton Moore insane.

Tim

4:29 Does Odorizzi trade mean Twins won't make a(nother) run at a trade for Archer?

Steve Adams

4:30 They'll be continuing their efforts there and on virtually every other front either until Opening Day or until they get another arm

I think it's a bit unfair to compare the quality of 2013 pitchers to the quality of 2018 pitchers. Odorizzi and Reed are a head above anything the Twins acquired that offseason.

Vance Worley too?!

Addison Reed is from San Diego.

Sure, there are bound to be exceptions to the rule, and Reed is a good example of someone who had been in the Midwest and enjoyed their time here, and had said as much. The overall point is that as much as we would like to boil it down to one, free agency isn't just an auction, it's a bunch of guys trying to find the right job fit for themselves and their families.

I certainly don't deny these guys have multiple variables to consider.

I get annoyed when the default for anyone we fail to sign is, "he obviously had no interest in coming here. ", despite zero evidence of such.

That's fair. I tried to couch my language to reflect that it was just my interpretation of what I've heard, and based it in experience travelling and living out of state, not that it was a statement of fact.

" I started with it, I got rid of it, and brought it back,” Buxton said, saying that the changes along the way were “just to change” and came from “not trusting myself.”  "

Apparently, from pitch to pitch...

Um, not listening to his coaches?  Head case?

The 1st video shows a different problem:  pitch recognition.  The mechanics look pretty sound.  Experience is the cure and if that's the only problem, then Buxton should stay in the majors.  But it's not.

2nd pitch, I'll argue that Parker is wrong.  I don't believe that toe tap is a planned strategy.  If it is, it's a really stupid one.  As shown in the video, that swing was not more compact.

What happened here is Buxton got fooled again, over-committed to the pitch and, what seemed like, trying to reload his swing somehow.  You'll never generate bat speed that way.  A lot of wind and a lot of K's.

Me, the 1st time I'd see that toe tap, back to AAA.  He's gotta learn sound, consistently repeatable, mechanics.

Buxton's hitting problems had zero to do with his toe-tap, kick, or lack of either. Buxton wasn't letting his back hip carry through over the plate. As a result, he was unable to reach outside pitches, and had little power on balls outside the center of the zone. Buxton's problem was a less serious case of "The French Mistake" that plagued Aaron Hicks before he left for the Yankers.

Adrian Gonzalez shows us all how to let the back hip follow through over the plate. Buxton needs to do that, end of story.

I think it shouldn't fail to be recognized that for all of our angst about payroll and missing out on free agents, it could be much, much worse.

Holy hell, can anyone imagine what it would be like if we were TB fans right now where the team is making no effort to re-sign Cobb or Logan Morrison, cut a guy who had a .815 OPS last year, traded Odorizzi for a song and the face of their franchise for a couple of guys who few are excited about any longer?

"Tampa Bay Fan"? What's that?

Heyman: the Twins have flexibility and interest in Lynn if his asking price drops.

I'm curious what his asking price is (and theirs). He's my next target (with maybe the exception of a 1 year deal for Arietta who I doubt would be interested in that).

Jon: What are you looking for for Max Kepler this year? Assume he will get some good run in Minnesota?

Keith Law: Not quite sure what you’re asking in the second question. I expect continued improvement at the plate – he’s always developed on a delayed sort of schedule, unsurprising for someone who grew up in a non-baseball country.

I thought the default was:

"We made a lowball offer. Why didn't they just offer more than anyone else?"

Someone should post the defaults so we are all on the same page.

I hope the Twins get him back, but he was the guy who when left unprotected I thought had the best chance of sticking in the majors. Man, it really seemed like his numbers were overlooked last year.

It'd be a bummer to lose him, however it is encouraging that he figured this out last year while still in the Twins organization. It used to be where guys had revelations about their approach only after leaving the Twins.

In the article Bard stated that he is throwing his fastball belt high. When people post what major league hitters hit as a graphic the  belt high pitches tend to get the highest numbers. If that is where Bard's pitches go then that is the answer to the riddle of why the Twins did not protect him despite the numbers.

Baseball America has a Phil Miller article about Tyler Kinley and the analytics-based decision to draft him, here.  It is behind their paywall.  A few quotes from Mike Radcliff regarding his development and the Twins plans for him as well.

Yea and what's depressing is he says the Twins never told him his spin rate. I thought the new regime was fixing all this. Although, they finally let that minor league pitching coordinator go (I believe Rasmussen). Long over due.

To be fair, Bard was referring to 2016 when he first learned his spin rate, before Falvey and Levine came aboard.

Yesterday, I read this and got depressed.  Then I looked at the LAA spring training box scores and saw that Bard's first two outings were perfect, and got even more depressed.  Later in the evening, I saw that Bard was shelled in yesterday's appearance, and it made me happier.

Where should I seek counseling?

Thoughts are that the Twins might get both Burdi and Bard back, which complicates already overflowing AAA/AA pitching rosters.

Burdi is on the 60 day dl. That would be an indication that Pittsburgh plans to keep him.

They'll try at least. With Pittsburgh looking like a rebuild situation, they certainly are more likely to let him struggle at the majors and keep him be it this summer or next year.

At least the Angels are trying to win now. Hopefully they'll feel Bard is too much of a liability to trust on a team trying to win it all. I'd think the odds of getting Bard back are probably much higher than Burdi's regardless of how either is pitching (or not pitching).
