Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 I'm just going to post here whenever they do an article on the Twins. Today, they have one on Trevor May (noting some changes in set up, and in approach and outcomes). they also have one on Berrios, where his top statistical comparison is...........Pedro Martinez.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 they also have one on Berrios, where his top statistical comparison is...........Pedro Martinez.Pedro is probably Berrios' floor, IMO.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2016 Author Posted April 27, 2016 Pedro is probably Berrios' floor, IMO. hahahahahahaha, I'm going to take that as humor.

Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2016 Author Posted April 27, 2016 DID I SPECIFY? STOP STRAWMANNING MY ARGUMENT. less coffee today might be a good idea......
bluechipper Provisional Member Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 I think we'll see a lot of the same pitching approach with Berrios that we see with Trevor May. Finally we will see some Twins pitchers who utilize the high fastball to get swings and misses.
bluechipper Provisional Member Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 There was also a nice little dig at Eduardo Escobar at the end of the Berrios article. I'm not sure that he deserves to be lumped into the same category as Kurt Suzuki in terms of noting the upgrades that will be in place at their positions in the future..

FormerMinnasotan Provisional Member Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 In terms of pure stuff and control yeah I can see how Berrios could be compared to Perdo Martinez. Add to that both are similar size and yeah I see it.
cmoss84 Verified Member Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 Pedro is a little shorter and has ridiculously large hands...which is why his change-up was maybe the best of all time. But awesome comp! Going to be fun tonight-this is definitely the most excited I've been to see a Twin's pitcher since...maybe Liriano?
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 I noticed that also........ Yeah, this is the one that actually stood out to me: -There’s no doubt that Berrios makes the Twins a better team in 2016. He’s a clear upgrade over Kyle Gibson, who he’ll be replacing in Minnesota’s rotation.- I really want an analytical team, but there are some compelling arguments as to why players SHOULDN'T read Fangraphs.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2016 Author Posted April 27, 2016 Yeah, this is the one that actually stood out to me: -There’s no doubt that Berrios makes the Twins a better team in 2016. I missed that part.......I think they are surprisingly imprecise in their writing, for a mostly math site.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2016 Author Posted June 3, 2016 Not only is there a Buxton article.....Parker is credited in it. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/theory-and-implementation-with-byron-buxton/
Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 Not only is there a Buxton article.....Parker is credited in it. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/theory-and-implementation-with-byron-buxton/ These guys cannot do math (or let excel do it and have no editing) 17-2 = 16 The one thing that this article fails to mention is that Buxton's problem was not on his toes, but dealing with major league breaking balls, a thing he did not have to deal with in AAA. Time will tell if the leg thing might help
Hosken Bombo Disco Community Moderator Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 Is the toe-tap with two strikes the modern day version of choking up with two strikes?
Brandon Warne Verified Member Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 Yeah, this is the one that actually stood out to me: -There’s no doubt that Berrios makes the Twins a better team in 2016. Sometimes I feel like we -- I also write at Fangraphs -- are in a rush to be so smart that we also want to be really dickish. You know, as if Eduardo Escobar hasn't been a fine shortstop prior to this year. Or Kyle Gibson not being a decent starter -- or at least not the "first guy out" on the depth chart. Snark only works if it's smart.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 To be fair, it could have been a typo or brain fart, and/or related to the fact the Escobar and Gibson were pretty bad in April along with their longer-term questions.
ashbury Verified Member Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 These guys cannot do math (or let excel do it and have no editing) 17-2 = 16Might be roundoff, since they weren't showing any decimal places. 1.6 becomes 2,17.4 becomes 17,17.4-1.6=15.8 becomes 16. Sumpin' like that?
HitInAPinch Verified Member Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 " I started with it, I got rid of it, and brought it back,” Buxton said, saying that the changes along the way were “just to change” and came from “not trusting myself.” " Apparently, from pitch to pitch... Um, not listening to his coaches? Head case? The 1st video shows a different problem: pitch recognition. The mechanics look pretty sound. Experience is the cure and if that's the only problem, then Buxton should stay in the majors. But it's not. 2nd pitch, I'll argue that Parker is wrong. I don't believe that toe tap is a planned strategy. If it is, it's a really stupid one. As shown in the video, that swing was not more compact. What happened here is Buxton got fooled again, over-committed to the pitch and, what seemed like, trying to reload his swing somehow. You'll never generate bat speed that way. A lot of wind and a lot of K's. Me, the 1st time I'd see that toe tap, back to AAA. He's gotta learn sound, consistently repeatable, mechanics.

Did he actively work on that at AAA or was he told to just mash? If toe tap helps him slap the ball on the ground with two strikes. But I think he had an ugly stat with two strikes last time up. Not listening to his coaches? Or coaches don't know what to tell him? Or neither or both or nothing to be worried about? Only the Twins know, and I bet even they don't know
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2016 Author Posted June 3, 2016 That first quote.....where are the coaches in that situation, to stop him? I don't get it. A tennis coach or a golf coach would kill her pupil for that.

Sumpin' like that? Totally like that. That's what Excel does But it is operates on N significant figures. If you cut those to 2 for your tables, you better make sure that the result makes sense in 2 significant figures
Pardon My Dinger Verified Member Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 Do we still think Fangrapghs was wrong about believing Berrios would be an upgrade over Gibson?Well, I don't think that person knows the Twins very well, but yeah. Pretty sure Berrios would be an upgrade over just about anyone. Most talented pitcher on staff.

Funny how some will point to an article written to praise a Twin or the team if written by someone like that though). Just because an article doesn't point out every single angle on everything about the subject down to the smallest detail in an article written for the masses doesn't mean it should be blown off as drivel.
