1:40 I think the Mariners do a lot there, look at some of their fringe acquisitions like Moll. Extreme high spin and low spin waiver pickups. I think very highly of the Cubs pitching analytics group, they're obviously doing their best to supplement offensive core with smart pitching pickups. The Rays were formidable with Kalk so maybe the Twins will pick it up.

1:58 Smyly had a crappier, longer injury history going in, so I guess that's an argument for Pineda. But Pineda had labrum surgery way back when, so I'll take Smyly.

12:37 Special arm. 97-100 in short bursts, 93-98 during starts without much movement, average cutter/slider in the upper-80s. Generates the velo pretty easily, an impressive physical specimen and athlete. Has had a surgery already.

I like that Longenhagen will answer questions about these lower level prospects. Klaw usually only talks about the known ones but Longenhagen seems to be pretty well versed on these guys.

Kiley is back with Fangraphs. Eric is not leaving....so there will be even more prospect coverage there.

How can KLaw have the capacity to answer questions like that when he is owning people on political/science questions?

 

And to be fair KLaw does cover and answer questions from all aspects of baseball, while Longenhagen is strictly prospects. I'm not sure KLaw even knows a whole lot on prospects that aren't in the top 100 range.

3:45 I still follow and cheer for the Twins. I get why some journalists say they give up their fandom, so to speak, when they get into the industry. But I'm hardly in a traditional media position, and I don't really think pulling for a certain team has ever influenced me to write anything one way or the other. If the Twins do something I find to be stupid, I don't have much of an issue saying it makes little sense to me. I treat them like I would any other club and don't place extra focus on Minnesota while working for MLBTR or anything.

3:47 Twins or Brewers make sense as alternate landing spots for Arrieta to me. Phillies if they want to keep getting aggressive.

Davis... Rockies, Cardinals, Twins, Dodgers (at a certain price point), Phils all make varying degrees of sense. Red Sox if they miss out on JDM and pivot to strengthen the pitching staff rather than bolster the lineup. Speculative, but I can see it.

KLaw is figuring out the hard way that the more he makes projections, the more wrong he is, and people are starting to see it and realize he's not a great resource for prospect ratings.

 

I like his profiles on minor league players but his projections/ratings on those players are worthless. He has no first-hand knowledge, but he's as good of a "Second hand" source as one can get. He has value, but the value is just not what some people think it is.

This is such a bad take it is ridiculous. He's always admitted the work is hard, and he'll get a lot wrong .

Any grad student will tell you that you use second hand sources at your own peril. KLaw is what he is, the glossy magazine talent of the baseball prospect business. He's good to get a survey-level overview, he's a bad source for details.

I mostly agree with this. I think some guys are much better at seeing a player and breaking down what they saw than Klaw. Klaw is a good writer and has multiple sources that he trusts to be accurate. So we've seen Klaw be right about someone like Eddie Rosario before many others. 

But if Longenhagen and Klaw were sitting at a game and watching Nick Gordon I'd trust Longenhagen's daily write up a lot more than Klaw's write up.

A bit harsh perhaps? I don't think KLAW holds himself out to be more expert or knowledgable than he is, and why not appreciate that about him? And also appreciate that his second-hand sources are a collection of professional talent evaluators and developers that probably have spent considerable time with the prospect. The prospect evaluators you appear to trust are seeing prospects once or twice, if that. I'm not so sure I'm going to place much more stock in their observations than I might in an aggregation of many more observations, in theory at least, that KLAW passes along to us.

I'm interceding here before this discussion on KLaw gets too far in. This thread is for posting Fangraphs links, news, discussion related to the Twins. Or other national articles/discussion related to the Twins. If you want to have an in depth discussion on anything that gets brought here, start a thread on it.

 

As for a discussion on KLaw, let's not go there here. Start a discussion about him ... who he is and what he has to say about baseball and how he goes about it  ... that would be a great discussion to have ... in the 'Other Baseball' forum. With none of this generic "KLaw hates the Twins" 'stuff.'

This is pretty much the opposite of reality. Law does the work of scouting the guys himself. He does source some guys in and out of the game, but his eye always will beat out another's opinion in a debate on a guy.

 

He attends a TON of baseball throughout the year, amateur and minor league. He's been very open that he's not seen guys in the past when asked about them, and because he's tasked with doing so much other stuff for ESPN, he really cannot just focus on the prospect coverage the way his protege Longenhagens can for Fangraphs, which was a big pull for Eric to leave ESPN.
