REPORT: Former Minnesota Twin Delmon Young Arrested In Miami

According to a Miami sports talk host, Andy Slater, former Minnesota Twins outfielder Delmon Young was arrested in Miami on Sunday night after reportedly attacking a valet driver. Per the local police department, Young is accused of attacking the driver, choking him and using racial slurs.

 

Young allegedly grabbed a valet attendant by the neck at the Viceroy hotel in Miami after he wouldn't open a door with access to a club.

 

"Stupid Cuban, open the f--king door," Young allegedly told the victim. After repeatedly telling Young he couldn't open the door because the club was closed, Young said "I'm gonna f--king kill you, you Latin piece of sh-t" and then reached over the valet podium and grabbed the victim around his neck with both hands, strangling him, the police report states.

 

 

The victim was able to free himself and Young left the scene but when the police caught up with Young at his residence, Young answered the door "naked from the waist down" and used more racial slurs while being arrested shortly thereafter. 

 

In 2012, Young had to complete 10 days of community service and participate in a hate crime program stemming from an arrest in New York City after tackling a panhandler and using anti-Semitic slurs.

Not to pick nits, but where is the racial slur? Calling someone Cuban or Latin is hardly a slur, is it?

 

Anyway, more bad choices.

Well, I suppose using 'stupid' and 'piece of ****' as adjectives to the Cuban or Latin would be considered a slur, no?

Agreed.  Unneccesarily adding ethnicity in front of piece of *^%$ qualifies in my book

I don't know. I always assumed "racial slur" or "ethnic slur" meant the slur was the race/ethnic terminology itself, not the adjectives surrounding the race terminology. If someone said "you dumb African American" or "you dumb Australian" or "you dumb Trinidadian", are those all slurs?

 

Totally a sidebar to the original point that Delmon Young has a history of making poor choices. And strangling someone seems (to me) like it should be the focus of this particular bad choice.

Right, his violent behavior definitely should be. But you were the one who questioned it. :)

 

Anyway ... it's perhaps not a slur in the 'traditional' sense, but context is important and it's not the first time he's responded this way, both in the violence and the curses towards a specific ethnicity of an individual. How'd he know the guy was Cuban? There are certainly at the very least racist overtones in that for me.

Agreed. Had Young just called him a 'stupid piece of ****' it wouldn't be bigoted. He'd just be an ***hole.

 

And last time Delmon got in trouble for this, he yelled '****ing Jew.'

 

I'm guessing few wouldn't see that as a racial attack. I don't even feel comfortable typing it.

Yeah, context is always important. It just struck me as odd when the terms he used are the preferred terms. Like, take out the adjectives and it's just weird, not a slur, right? Or is it still a slur because he was angry when he said it, so we can assume that it was intended as a negative? Or is it a slur because the guy was actually an American of Cuban descent, not Cuban? Or Puerto Rican but wearing a shirt that said, "Kiss me, I'm Cuban"?

 

Oh great, here I go again, asking more non-strangling questions! :)

I've always wondered what scout or player eval. guys recommended that Bill Smith trade for the guy.

To be fair Baseball America had him between #1 and #3 prospect in baseball for 4 straight years, as a 19 year old in AA and AAA he put up a .881 OPS and 26 HR's and as a 21 year old rookie, held his own. It's not like the Twins were the only team to "see" his potential. Unfortunately as we now know, other than 2010 he never lived up anywhere near his potential.

I still don't really fault the Twins for making the trade. Delmon had his risks no doubt, but the upside and talent were always there, sometimes these things work out, sometimes they don't. I just wish they hadn't given up Garza, but I suppose that trade probably doesn't happen without him.

My guess is potentially. Though if the crime wasn't motivated by race etc (i.e. he was pissed that he couldn't get into a closed club) then I could see that not being charged as a hate crime.

 

Either way, he should probably see like 30 days in jail regardless at this stage. As much as we joke/poke fun it's pretty clear the guy has a major drinking issue, hopefully he can clean up his act a bit.

LOL. I know I shouldn't laugh at other people's mistakes and the misfortune of the poor valet for being in the same place at the same time as Delmon Young. But it's too hard not to laugh about this.

I    guess he won't be supporting Ted Cruz or Marco Rubio (Cuban Candidates) or Bernie Sanders (Jewish Candidate).   I think the more appropriate term for both of the Delmon incidents is "Bigoted" rather than "racist." Cuban is nor a "race" nor is being Jewish being part of a "race".   Maybe the punishment will be to send him to Cuba - How about Guantanemo..

I agree, I preferred to keep Garza due to him being a pitcher with high upside, but I wasn't upset, and quickly got excited about Young's huge potential.

 

But also of note, while it's easy to say the Twins perhaps should have done more investigating to notice Young's red flags, perhaps they did. Let's not forget that the Twins already had concerns about Garza's attitude and his insistence on doing things his way. I personally didn't like the Twins approach to pitching back during that time, but it doesn't change the fact that both the Twins and the Rays might have considered the trade one of those "change of scenery" deals that might work out for all parties.

 

Obviously it didn't, but that might have been the thinking. Garza too has had some, let's say un-PC issues. The Twins may have just guessed that Garza was more of a loose canon and guessed wrong, but not by much.
