goulik Verified Member Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 Not as exciting as Tulo but an upgrade. What would it take?
jorgenswest Verified Member Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 Reyes is now what we were concerned Tulowitzki would be in two years. His defense is below average. His bat is weaker and void against lefties this year. He might be a slight upgrade this year but will be a huge deficit going forward. He might be worth a win though and that win could be the difference between being the road team in a wild card play in game and sitting on the outside. The Twins would have to plan to move him to LF for the future though. The only deal I would consider is Mauer for Reyes. The Twins could play Reyes at SS this year and replace Mauer in the lineup with Arcia or Kepler or a rental bat. The Twins might need to send some cash or C prospects or both with Mauer.
drjim Provisional Member Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 Probably not much if the Twins take on the whole contract.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 I would take Reyes in a heartbeat, maybe a good time to flip nolascos contract as well. Walker+Nolasco+Gonsalves for Reyes enough?

A no-trade clause means he can't be traded. So trading him is not an option. And proposing for him to be traded is not an option.
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 Nolasco and a C prospect for Reyes works. Not more than that. Tulo made sense as a gamble. Reyes doesn't.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 A team is only on the hook for Reyes for two more years. I can handle two years even if it turns out to be a bust.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 And proposing for him to be traded is not an option. No, that's still an option if I'm reading this 1st amendment thing correctly.

I must be missing something.

Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 Would rather see Polanco (or Escobar) get a shot. Then spend the effort addressing the bullpen, and maybe get AJ's sorry butt over here.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 At $48m. Older than Tulo. .708 OPS and trending down. No.Only 32, posted a 105 OPS+ last year and still a very good threat on the base paths (15 SB vs 2 CS this year) If they can unload nolasco as part of the deal I am all for giving up a couple solid but not elite prospects for him. I wouldn't give up anything valuable for Reyes, my very simple point is that a two year albatross contract isn't nearly as disasterous for a club as a four year albatross contract.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 The price in prospects would have to be almost free for me to consider Reyes and his contract.

Now you want to pay Jose Reyes twenty TWO million for his. Apologies in advance if I'm misremembering your previous posts.
mudcat14 Verified Member Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 I wouldn't waste any more thought or effort on SS now that Tulo is out of the picture. Going into 2016, a serviceable option will arise from a 3-way contest between Escobar, Santana & Polanco. Each has their own strength & weaknesses, but if one can emerge to be at least consistent, they'll do fine. Our biggest priority's are the bullpen and finding a productive catcher. I'm convinced both will need to be addressed from outside of the organization. I'm not very confident that either can be resolved for this season. I hate too say it, but the prudent approach may now be to stand pat and pursue trades or FA's over the winter.

Offer salary relief and that's it. But yeah, move on to other positions now that Tulo is gone.

Why hasn't that happened this year? Escobar is who he is, a util guy, Santana has the best chance to stick but looks lost all over the place this year and Polanco has some doubts about whether he can even stick at SS defensively.

At the very least, Escobar should have received his shot months ago.

Brock, /rubs templesEscobar had his shot, it was 2014, he proved he can't play defense enough at the major league level to be a viable solution.
halfchest Provisional Member Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 If you can send Nolasco to them you're paying about 10 million per year for Reyes on a short term deal. So take Nolasco out of the equation and assume you're just trading for Reyes on a 2 year 20 million deal + what's left of this year. Then is it worth anything? I haven't watched Reyes and can't comment on his defense but figure it's gotta be better than what we're getting now and even in a down year offensively he'd be a solid leadoff option for the Twins. It's worth at least considering when you look at it this way.

Most people on this board think he's an adequate defender as a short term option AND the defensive metrics back up that observation. Eduardo Escobar is not a perfect solution but he's the best solution the Twins have and it's not even close.
kab21 Verified Member Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 I really don't understand why anyone is against adding Reyes if the Twins can flip Nolasco in the deal. He has a .700 OPS at SS and would be a no doubt leadoff hitter that the lineup needs. Yes, he isn't awesome but that is why he is available at a low cost.

One year isn't going to do much damage, four years will. I'm not advocating for Reyes, I'm just relieved this team won't be stuck with another guy on a four year deal. Two years, whatever, I'd pass but it can't cause too much trouble.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 Eduardo Escobar is not a perfect solution but he's the best solution the Twins have and it's not even close. The only part of that sentence that is true is bolded. His zero range defense alone close the Twins the first Perkins blown save.

Bonus: 36 SB and 4 CS over the last season and a half, I think he could be a great mentor for base running to the youngsters, something this team desperately needs as well.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 Tulo was the Wendy Peffercorn, the Jenny from Forrest Gump. The guy I was targeting the most to join this team... Jose Reyes is still an above average SS and better than any option that we have on roster... but still. I'm going to view it as a disappointment if we do acquire him.

If I wanted to make a point, I could dig through the archives and find footage of Ozzie Smith punting a game-losing ball and declare him a terrible shortstop. You're letting yourself go completely off the rails about Eduardo.
