The Minnesota Twins have no shortage of trade deadline questions to answer over the next week. Ryan Jeffers is one of the organization’s most obvious trade candidates as he approaches free agency, and if the Twins decide to move their veteran catcher, finding a return that helps both now and in the future will be the priority. One recently proposed deal checks both boxes.

According to The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner, the Yankees could send shortstop Anthony Volpe and reliever Camilo Doval to Minnesota in exchange for Jeffers. Shortstop has been the most underperforming position in a lineup that leads the American League in runs scored. While Volpe’s value has fallen considerably over the last two seasons, the Twins would be betting on a talented player rediscovering the potential that once made him one of baseball’s premier prospects.

Jeffers Makes Sense for New York

The Yankees have been connected to the catching market leading up to the deadline, and Jeffers fits what they’re searching for. Kirschner noted that Jeffers has an existing relationship with Yankees director of catching Tanner Swanson, who played an instrumental role in Minnesota selecting Jeffers in the second round of the 2018 MLB Draft.

“Ryan Jeffers is the most logical catching target for the Yankees because of his relationship with Tanner Swanson, the club’s director of catching. Swanson was a key figure in the Minnesota Twins’ decision to draft Jeffers in 2018,” Kirschner wrote. “Jeffers will be a free agent after this season, so this move would also give the Yankees a stretch run to determine if he could also be a longer-term fit. In return, the Twins would get two change-of-scenery candidates in Volpe and Doval.”

For New York, Jeffers would fill an immediate need behind the plate while allowing the club to evaluate whether he’s worth retaining beyond this season.

Could Minnesota Unlock Volpe?

From the Twins’ perspective, Volpe would be the centerpiece of the return. The former first-round pick entered professional baseball with enormous expectations, but his offensive production has never consistently matched the hype. Injuries haven’t helped, as Volpe missed the first month and a half of the season recovering from shoulder surgery before returning to split time at shortstop with Jose Caballero.

In 158 plate appearances this season, the 25-year-old has hit .246/.342/.326 (.668) with one home run and 13 RBI. While both his batting average and on-base percentage are the highest marks of his career, the lack of power has limited his overall production.

Since making his MLB debut in 2023, Volpe owns a .224/.288/.375 (.663) career slash line. He flashed intriguing power early in his career, hitting 21 home runs as a rookie before adding 19 more the following season, but his offensive inconsistency has remained a recurring issue.

Even so, the Twins could view Volpe differently than the Yankees do. Minnesota has shown a willingness to bet on athletic players with strong defensive ability (6 OAA in 2026), particularly when they’re still under team control. Volpe would also give the Twins another option at shortstop, a position that seems to be waiting for top prospects Kaelen Culpepper and Marek Houston.

Doval Addresses Another Need

Adding Camilo Doval could make the proposal even more intriguing. While the Twins have been expected to pursue bullpen help at the deadline, acquiring an established late-inning reliever as part of a larger deal would allow them to strengthen another area of need without sacrificing additional prospect capital.

He has a 4.51 FIP and a 22.6 K% this season. A reliever with Doval’s experience could immediately slot into the middle of Minnesota’s bullpen while remaining under team control through next season.

A High-Risk, High-Reward Gamble

Trading Jeffers won’t be easy, especially for a club that still sees itself as a postseason contender. But if Minnesota decides his impending free agency makes a move inevitable, maximizing the return becomes the priority.

Volpe is no longer viewed as the lineup changing player many expected when he arrived in New York, but he is still just 25 years old with premium defensive skills and untapped offensive upside. Pairing him with a proven reliever like Doval could give the Twins two players capable of making an impact well beyond 2026.

For a front office looking to compete now while building for the future, this is exactly the type of creative buy-low opportunity worth exploring.

It is definitely an interesting package, but it isn't what I would look for with trading Jeffers. Doval has been inconsistent at best for the Yankees and Volpe definitely has high upside, but the Twins have Culpepper and Houston coming up at shortstop. I wouldn't be angry if the Twins got this and Volpe is intriguing, but I would look to getting some young controllable arms for Jeffers. Elmer Rodriguez or Carlos Lagrange would be ideal, and I would trade Jeffers straight up for Rodriguez at least and maybe Lagrange as well.

It is always fun when a national guy writes about the Yankeees trading for someone. So Jeffers is a rental and the writer suggests Volpe and Doval for him. Well, Luis Arraez is a rental as well. Why don't the Twins offer the Giants Matt Wallner and Cole Sands for Arraez. Surely that idea would fly better than the NYY suggested offer for Jeffers.

This feels like the Yankees side for the offer.  To me doesn't look nearly good enough.  Volpe would be trying to rehab his value without the bright lights of New York.  For the remainder of 26 its interesting but it becomes harder to envision it working in 27/28 unless we are moving players all over.  Definitely looks like round peg into a square hole.  Now I think his confidence is shot in New York, so could I see a turn around.  Absolutely.  We don't seem like the best team unless we have zero confidence in Kreidler.

I would give Larnach and Jeffers for Rodriguez and Volpe - but my guess is they will think its an overpay.

I'm not convinced this is better than keeping Jeffers and attempting to make the playoffs.

Why would the Twins be trading one of the best players in a premium position this year for a buy-low opportunity? How does this help the Twins for the future?

I don't want the Yankee's junk for Jeffers.  Yankee's fan laugh at the Twins enough as it is. Expecting us to take on the players they no longer want or need is insulting IMO.  Shortstop is not a need.  A marginal bullpen arm doesn't excite me. If Zoll does something like this I will be on every board asking for him to be fired.  We need pitching I'd say get Elmer and call it a day.  He's a top 100 prospect with years of control as a starter. That's what the Twins need.

I would be fine with adding Volpe and Doval, but I also want a pitching prospect (Lagrange, Lalane, Beck, Hess) from the Yankees. The Twins can help the Yankees shed salary and grab two useful players, but that can’t be the headline part of the deal.

Ryan Kreidler is the 27th ranked SS in MLB and his offense is fading as he gets more playing time. SS is definitely a need.

Conventional wisdom, when "scouting" prospects through stats only, is that they continue to improve (physical growth, experience) in absolute terms until around age 25, while the league they play in may disguise that improvement.  While I've found it a useful guideline, there is no law of physics or medicine that I know of that makes it an ironclad rule.  It looks like maybe Volpe was progressing as a hitter until his age-22 season, and then stopped.  His batting line 2023-26 in the majors is remarkably consistent.  He is who he is and there's no point in thinking you'll unlock something.  We've already got Ryan Kreidler and one is approximately enough.  Let the Yankees stew in their own juices.

Id take a swing on volpe improving with less pressure but if your doing that I wouldn't also want a risky reliever who's been terrible this year gotta be at least 1 for sure piece coming back imo

Yet his OPS is higher than Volpe's and he plays multiple positions.  The Yankee's are ready to install their number one prospect at short and we are getting ready to install our third best prospect there.  Even as a throw in he takes up a 40 man spot.  Get arms. We need arms.

I see this sentiment regarding a lot of players.  Why would we be interested in a player who stands a chance to revert in, say, the Wild Card round of the playoffs when the bright lights are coming back on?  (Assuming we even have the cause of the problem correctly pegged, which I'm generally reluctant to accuse a player of.)

I'd be open to it. We have seen with Keith Beauargard has done to help Larnach and others. If there is any way to unlock anything with Volpe, then it's worth a shot.

I know it also could feel like he would be blocking Culpepper and even Houston. But Culpepper is probably a better 3b or 2b long term, and Houston still needs another year in the minors to be honest unless there aren't questions about his bat any longer. And even then, more good defensive infielders isn't a bad thing.

Also, this does set the bar for what Tampa has to beat if they want Jeffers.

This would be a disaster and reason enough to fire Jeremy Zoll immediately.

Volpe helps nothing and blocks 2 of our best prospects.  Doval?? Seriously???

He's a terrible defender. This is the worst idea ever.

If Keith Beauargard is that good then why can't he get Kreidler or Lee to be just as good or better than Volpe?

Kreidler isn't a prospect, and really I'd argue he HAS gotten Lee to be probably as good as he can be now right? Plus Lee just isn't a shortstop.

You are comparing apples and oranges.

The Twins current closer was a risky reliever who performed terribly for the Yankees. Doval throws gas. I would love to see if Maki can help him get his slider back.

Savant has him pretty high end in terms of range.

And believe me, in my 40 and older gym class this morning, if you saw my attempts at crunches, I think you would reconsider your statement :)

Anyway, think about this; how better to help the infield defense overall than to get Clemens off of 2b? Houston isn't ready, so if you have Volpe at SS and Culpepper at 2B, that is a MUCH improved infield defense to what is currently being thrown out there no?

Doesn't mean Volpe is promised anything for 2027. But for the last 2 months of the year, that is a stronger up the middle defense than this team has had all season. That helps run prevention, no?

And really, either Clemens or Lewis, their best defensive position is 1b right?

This is likely our main trade asset and we want to use it on two reclamation projects?  Do that stuff in the offseason.

Or better yet, stop grabbing reclamation projects.

All the metrics say otherwise. He was bad last year but was playing with a torn labrum.

So far in his career he’s had seasons with 17, 16, and 19 errors. This season only 3 so far but he’s played less than 1/3 the number of innings as previous seasons.

I would just say remember the Outman experience.  We were supposed to be able to fix him too.  It never happened.

Again, apples and oranges. Volpe's k percentage this year is basically half of Outman's. Volpe is about 22%, and Outman is over 40.
