Too much feet dragging on moving these guys to the pen.

Plus, there would be a big benefit to free agency and roster construction if this team is able to build the bullpen internally.

I think it's the opposite.  I can get a six pack of relievers at the corner store for a tenth the cost of a starter.  Wait as long as possible and then when you are sure they can't make it as a starter, then trade them to someone who still thinks they can.  The bullpen is relatively easy to fill.

So trade Duran and Jax for an overpay, and fill the pen next year with random guys?

That probably defeats the point of the spot start. They are trying to extend the pitching  through a stretch with no off days.  It's probably more like Louis will wear it for 100 pitches regardless of result type of night.

What do you think the point of spot start is if not giving the rotation a breather? If it's getting Varland 100 pitches in at SP no matter what, it'll be a long night.

I can't see the Twins dealing SWR, who is cheap and has been effective, if not great, as a 23 year old .....

That is a so very true, just thinking the asking price would most likely be him and not Varland.

7 hits, 4 walks, a HR, and 6 runs, in 3 innings in his last start for the Saints. How can you NOT give the spot start to Louie??

I realize the pick’ins are slim over in St Paul, but at least Boushley has kinda earned the chance…his AAA results have been light years better than Varlands. What do we expect of Louie? Will be go with the approach that didn’t work at AAA…or the approach that didn’t work with the Twins?

On the basis of performance, Boushley deserves a start and major league time over Varland, but Boushley is 30, doesn't throw overly hard and doesn't have impressive "stuff". Varland has good pitches--we've seen him hold down impressive lineups--but he's struggled this year. The Twins have kept Varland in a starting role and I don't blame them, but if he keeps struggling this year, I would presume the next step is the bullpen.

Easy, but not effectively. I'm anything but a Terry Ryan apologist, but he was good at grabbing other team's cast off relievers. This front office has had a terrible success rate with that, while conversely having good success with the starter-turned-relief arms already in the system.

I'd like them to stop throwing away money and more importantly roster spots on guys who can't be optioned.

I had a look at the lineups and was mildly surprised that Miranda is out of the lineup for the second day in a row. Margot is getting a start in left field--he has been hitting better--with Larnach at DH and Kirilloff at first base. I guess Rocco is going with Margot as the "hot hand".

Most of their offseason acquisitions are optionable (Staumont, Topa, Castillo), with the exceptions being Okert and Jackson. Jackson is in St. Paul and Okert is going pretty well. I guess I don't think it is a huge problem. I think the larger problem is getting guys who can't stay healthy.

The platoon switches are pretty easy to see--Miranda or Jeffers for Larnach and Santana for Kirilloff. I really don't see any role for Farmer unless somebody gets injured.

I don't know what to say to that as an interpretation of my post.

It doesn't help as much if you just shift the burden to the bullpen.  They are trying to get 6-7 "free" innings from outside the room. That's also probably part of why they are doing it against the Rockies instead of the Yankees.

The biggest difference from this and the last front office in this regard is that we are going to have a whole lot more interesting pitchers to chose from internally. They are very good at turning up the stuff.

Two lefties in the Rockies pen, they can make them face three righties.  One too many first basey types I guess.

You said it was easy to find relief pitchers any time. If true, and teams will trade for yours, why not trade them and find those relievers just lying around?

Now Margot gets to play against righties. Great. 😑

No platooning for the best player on the team!🤪
