In other bad minor league injury news. Canterino and Prielipp both on the 60 Day IL.

If Canterino is going on the 60 day, that opens up the job to anyone in the system. I'd still bet on Miranda or Camargo, but O'Keefe and Prato were among the last cuts. I'd put Helman in that group but he barely played  the infield last year, and I don't think it's an OF they add. But maybe if Castro gets more 3B reps than Farmer.

I'd really only want to add another catcher if it's an audition for the long term backup gig, but O'Keefe is the most cuttable if Lewis is expected to return soon.

Why, oh why, do the baseball gods pick on the Twins of all the 30 available teams?

I'm not in any way a medical professional or professional sports person or anything. I'm just a guy typing into a comment box on my phone. But I'm going to throw out a theory here: it's the cold weather.

Athletes "warm up" to prevent injuries like strains and pulls. It stands to reason, then, that weather that cools your body down more quickly would tend to lead to more of these injuries.

Of course, this doesn't explain all the injuries (getting your fingers broken by pitches and do forth), but it is an explanation for why we tend to have more injuries.

Are these guys actually in game playing shape coming out of spring training? Pulling a quad or hamstring means that maybe not enough stretching or sprinting during pregame warmup. It just seems so preventable to me. Aaaagh!!

Maybe it's preventable if they practice in Minnesota in February and March instead of Florida. Going from the cold to heat causes cramps, going from heat to the cold causes muscle strains. I don't think it's avoidable with stretching.

I am really curious on why so many people want to keep a player who has gotten injured time and time again. Why waste the resources?

Because his ba is 1.000 and his ops is 5.000 Lewis will be back soon enough.

Expected. Here's hoping both are healthy and ready to throw by mid season.

Considering their health records I would not expect anything from either of them.  Sad to see young arms go down, but some are just now built for long term use.

3-4 months eh? Based on what?

I'm puzzled/curious about that time frame too. They are doing, or have done, an MRI, so I guess we just have to wait for the results at this point. Obviously, a few weeks is preferable to a few months. Let's cross all our fingers and toes for Royce!

It was 72 degrees in KC yesterday.

Good question. I think it was clearly the first time Royce was running at full speed, going all out on the bases. During Spring Training they jog and run pretty slowly so they don't get hurt....which, ironically, means they're more likely to get hurt during the opening week of the season! I remember when Buxton got that injury sliding into 2nd base in Boston a couple years ago early in the season, I was thinking how he probably didn't practice much full-speed sliding in Spring Training and this is why he was hurt.

Maybe the Twins need to push their guys harder working out in Feb and early March?

"A few weeks" is still brutal, to be honest. That means he's missing a month of the season - the guy's the best player on the team. Hard to find a silver lining on this injury, from my point of view.

Very true, Any amount of time on the IL hurts the team and obviously makes it longer for Royce to rehab and get back into action. Let's keep hoping for good news on this injury.

I think Martin is the logical choice to come up. He play some 2B, as well as LF/CF and I'd play Castro at 3B most days. Keep Farmer in his role.

I am with you Doc.  They are not bringing someone up to start.  Castro starting at 3B makes sense.  We can use Martin or Prato as a utility player until Lewis is back.  Farmer could at 3B against LHP with Martin/Prato starting at 2B.

I didn't see the game.  Is there a chance they were just using precaution?

Nope. He hit 2B bag awkwardly and his next steps made it obvious something serious was wrong. Ha had already had an MRI before the end of the game. It is really too bad. Assuming 6 weeks plus ….,,maybe 8 weeks out of the line-up because they’ll error on side of precaution. Kid can’t get a break!!

They may lean on Eddie more at 2B v. lefties as well.

Your thoughts and the Docs are 100% - use Castro at 3B regularly, with Farmer occasionally. Martin or even Larnach are the guys I see…….definitely need an OF, as Castro’s availability will be consumed at 3rd.

Prato isn't on the 40-man. I think the choice should be Martin with Lee injured.

False. Lewis's OPS is 3.500.

It was dropping like a rock at the time of his injury ...

With Canterino now on the 60-day IL, there's an open spot on the 40-man. I don't think it's Prato, but I also don't know that it's Martin. Prato did play every position except CF and C last year, so he's more versatile if that's what they're looking for. But since the team was stuck using Margot at DH on opening day, my guess is that it's Miranda or Camargo, who seem like better fits to dabble in that simple role. They also gave Helman a lot of opportunities in spring, I could see him too.

Difficult.  Not impossible.

O'Keefe has already been cut by the Saints

The braintrust here at TD seems to have missed this tidbit.  I do see it on the player's mlb.com page transactions list.  He seemed to have had a decent enough spring with the bat, although obviously in tiny sample size.  I thought he was a good non-roster pickup, and I'm going to assume he requested the release.  Oh well.

Not certain about this, but I don’t think they can take him off the roster unless he (Canterino) is getting service time.

I am a believer in Martin’s pedigree and when he played in the spring it was often with or against major leaguers in comparison to Prato, especially. If a 40-man spot is needed to fill for Lewis’ injury, Helman or Prato have the utility skills, but I feel like it is Martin’s time, especially with Lee unavailable.

I want to see Martin get a shot, just like I want to see most of the young guys get a shot. However, and I know this isn't a popular opinion, Martin has been around long enough that I think his pedigree is next to meaningless. He doesn't play a premium position unless they give him a shot in CF again, and he is a slap hitter. I want to see him, but I just think his ceiling is so low. Best case scenario seems like Luis Castillo but if you get much less than that and you're a replacement player because the margin for error is so small with only singles and walks to fall back on.
