stringer bell Verified Member Posted October 25, 2023 Posted October 25, 2023 I am counting 42 players. Subtracting soon-to-be free agents Gray, Keuchel, Maeda, Mahle, Pagán, Solano, Gallo and Taylor, the total is now 34. Is that right?

Just what they need to add some Rule 5s or minor league (their own) free agents.

I thought Ortega had a chance to be a good bullpen arm both in '23 and '24. We shall see what the Astros get out of him. Dman 1

He reached AAA a month after Martin, and as far as his promotion path goes, he is ahead of Julien and Wallner considering neither got bumped up to AAA in 2022. If those guys aren't considered prospects, then I really could care less about prospects and only care about which minor leaguers can come up and contribute. Same goes for Camargo. And should any of Prato, Williams and Kiersey remain after the draft, I'm not closing the book on them either. Major League Ready, Twins_Fan_in_NJ, Doctor Wu and 2 others 5

Will Gordon be traded or dfa'd prior to 11/14 to make room for another prospect to avoid losing them in the rule 5 draft?

At the moment I count 17 position players and 19 pitchers on the 40. And this includes the two prospects recently added, Severino and Camargo. So they can add 4 more prospects if they wish, before needing to move someone already on the 40. However there are rules about the young'uns once they are added, so if they want to leave room for free agents they may not add too many more - again as you say they can certainly treat Gordon (or someone else they deem expendable) via trade/dfa when that time comes, but I wouldn't expect this week. Ronny Henriquez could conceivably be on thin ice rosterwise too, if they find they need a spot. Fatbat 1

I split this off. The other thread was really for during the 23 season. It doesn’t make sense to have part of the off-season in one thread, and part in another. And when the season starts, we will start a new transaction thread to keep track of the up and down. It’s a little different because in season we are looking more at the 26-man and and the transactions that affect that. During the off-season it’s mostly the 40=man with an eye to next spring of who will make the 26-man. Mike Sixel, nicksaviking and Seth Stohs 3

I haven't counted or verified, but if they're at 36 after adding Camargo and Severino, then there isn't much reason to drop too many. They'll add Martin and E-Rod which would put them at 38. At that point, those four new adds will not be able to be removed from the 40-man until spring training. As for Gordon, he might get DFAd. I'd say it'd be more likely that he gets non-tendered when that needs to happen later in the month. But, I'd also say that as well as we thought Willi Castro played in 2023, Nick Gordon's 2022 was nearly identical. I don't think that he should just be passed off. jorgenswest and Fatbat 2

I don't think the 2022 for Gordon profiles near as well as 2023 does for Castro. Hitting-wise they are similar, but defense, base running and versatility all favor Castro by a wide margin. Willi's speed and base running are far superior to Gordon and he's a better defender at second, short and third and pretty equal in the outfield (I'd favor Castro there as well). If there's only room for one true utility player, it has to be Castro. FlyingFinn, RpR, nicksaviking and 1 other 4
Fatbat Verified Member Posted November 11, 2023 Posted November 11, 2023 @Seth Stohs the non tender makes more sense. I was trying to clear more room on the 40 man and don’t give any value to Gordon in trades. He has lost his job to Castro so why keep him on the 40 man when those spots have actual value when trying to build the 2024 roster.

The batting projections for Castro and Gordon next year are very. Over his career Gordon has a 0 RAA at 2B, LF and SS. That is exactly average. He is -3 RAA in CF. That -3 all came in his rookie season when he had not played CF in the minors. In his second season he was at 0. Castro over his career is essentially the same. He is -1 at the three outfield positions, -4 at SS, +1 at 3B and +3 at 2B. They both have played several positions at a near average RAA. These are both valuable and inexpensive players. Combined with Martin they give the Twins depth where they should consider trading Polanco and Farmer. Those dollars can be used for a starting pitcher. I would hold onto Gordon.
