Twins sign Johan Camargo (oops, not)

A minor league deal. No specifics yet. Plays mostly SS and 3B, but has also played 2B and OF. Good utility type guy. Had a big year for Atl back in 2018. Was with Philly last year. Only 28 years old.

Phillies were apparently pretty desperate at shortstop in 2022, to give him even what playing time he got.  "Break glass in emergency" in any case, but especially so at SS.

The report I saw said Johan Camargo, so if it turns out to be Jair Camargo, I stand corrected and apologize for posting the wrong info.

It was reported by a few so no worries at all.

Interesting...everything I'm seeing still says Johan Camargo. CBS Sports, various MLB sites, etc. Nobody has changed it yet.

Turns out they didn’t really sign him. Somehow somebody confused Jair Camargo with Johan Camargo and reported a non-existent deal. Quite bizarre!

Jair Camargo signing is excellent both for the Twins and Camargo. He immediately returns to being the top catching prospect for the Twins (Cardenas is a bit below him) and has a clear path to MLB by resigning, much more so than with anyone else.

Once again...I apologize for posting the incorrect info yesterday. All the reports I saw said Johan, not Jair.

We would have removed this thread had it been a heinous offense. It clearly was a non-TwinsDaily affiliated error that can now be kept in perpetuity for us to rue when it turns out Johan was a late-blooming HOF shortstop we missed out on.

Although a good year away, he is so young and still a promising catching prospect. But he will also be eligible for the Rule 5 draft if a team will pay the Twins the fee, as well as whatever the negotiated signing salary is.

And here I had this whole breakdown and really smart opinion to share on the wrong Carmago! Great!

J/K of course!

I'm actually really happy it was Jair. The Twins drafted 5 catchers between 2021 and 2022. And there's some interesting talent there, but at least 2-3yrs away. Jair is probably the best "overall" catcher in the upper levels if we're talking offense and defense. Isola and Williams appear to be offense first 1B/DH utility types until/unless they prove otherwise. The Twins really like the glove work of Banuelos, keeping him late in ST to work with the team, but he just hasn't shown any bat life as of yet.

I would just love for the Twins to re-sign Leon on some sort of split milb deal to keep him around, as Cleveland did last year. I'm not 100% sure Carmago is ready for AAA yet. I'm thinking he might begin 2023 in AA again, but belief in him and a good winter could change that thought. And I a little confused how he fits in to rule 5 status. Despite becoming a milb FA and then re-signing with the Twins, I'm going to assume he's still available in the rule 5 draft. I hope he's not selected as I could see him as the Twins #3 or #4 catcher in 2023 at some point. Not sure I see him as a logical draft and keep/stash option.

No need to apologize.....just checked the Twins MLB website; clicked 'Roster', clicked 'Transactions':

11/27/22 Minnesota Twins signed free agent 3B Johan Camargo to a minor league contract.

You'd think whatever team wanted him would much rather sign him to a MILB deal then draft him, as they would not be forced to keep him on their 26 man roster the whole year. He isn't getting drafted.
