Twins Roster Moves-2022

I recall last year we had a thread that tracked roster moves the Twins made throughout the 2021 season, and I think that did a good job condensing things down to having all the official moves here rather than having a new topic for every move (bigger moves will still warrant their own topic). I'd like to start off with the flurry of moves that happened today:

Kirilloff to 10-day IL (right wrist inflammation)
Cotton DFA'd

Larnach recalled from St. Paul
Rodríguez selected from St. Paul

So it seems the Cotton experiment is over already - though he may clear waivers. Rodriguez seems like temporary arm who will likely be DFA'd within the next week.

Feel free to post more updates here for future roster moves.

Usually the major league roster moves, as well as minor league roster moves, are reported in the daily wrap ups under "transactions" at the beginning of the post.

That's true, but this thread will function as a place to store all of them, rather than looking through the past Daily Write Ups to find them.

Poor roster management as well as a somewhat disrespectful tactic by Twins. We all knew Rodriguez was going to be DFA'ed the minute Baldelli sent him out for a fourth inning against the Dodgers despite the crowd of relievers huddled in the bullpen.

I know many people want 45 person squads with 28-30 active at a time but I believe the game requires more attention and management skill with 25 person active rosters and 15 day IL with minimum limits on days before sending down or being recalled. The PA missed some really simple player friendly deals in this last CBA.

I don't blame the Twins for using the rules as they exist and while it wasn't fair to Rodriguez' bubble gum card, he was/is a minor league starter (IIRC) so pitching four innings shouldn't have been too much of a stretch. Rodriguez got a chance to show what he had against a great major league team. Any of the 30 teams can interpret the information from his appearance (as well as his career arc) and decide whether he is worth picking up. Not the worst outcome for him.

I'm pretty sure he gets 15 days of MLB minimum pay, too.

I hope so. It's not that i feel sorry for Derek or anything. He is a professional athlete and knows the routines.

We all knew DR was not going to stick for long but with 16 active pitchers and a day off, it was unnecessary to use him the way the game unfolded. Did the Twins just decide the game was over? Maybe, maybe not. The vibe is off.

Well, they bypassed Jake Cave, who is drawing a pretty heft salary playing at AAA St. Paul. The thing now is that the Twins have three outfielders, two of whom SHOULD be playing everyday in St. Paul rather than riding the major league bench.

What we are about to see is how weak the Twins 40-man roster is if players go on the disabled list. There are a couple of names that can be cycled out and replaced by other names to be cycled in-and-out.

Miranda and Lewis are it for remaining becnh bats.

Of the 8 pitchers, three are on the disabled list (Balazovic, Stashak, Henriquez), and three have little chance of picthing in the bigs before September (Sands, Enlow, Vallimont). Which leaves the Twins with Strotman or Moran, or any of a dozen minor league free agents.

On the minor league side, the Twins cut Stevie Berman from the Saints, who was their return in the Andrew Vasquez trade with the Dodgers. The veteran minor leaguer quickly signed with the Blue Jays on a minor league contract.

Cutting Rodriguez was probably the right call. There's a good chance that he will pass through unsigned and wind up back in St. Paul. I never thought I would say this, but I'm glad to see that Garlick is back on the roster. We are going to have to cycle through some guys in LF and at least he provides a quality RH bat against LH pitching. My guess is it's going to be a platoon with him and Larnach in LF with Garlick also getting some ABs against left-handers with Kepler on the bench. Certainly not ideal but better than running Celestino, Rooker or Larnach out there full-time. Almost makes one wish we picked up Justin Upton, but not really. I would expect Celestino to go back to AAA when they need a spot and probably after May 1.

Now that Garlick is on the 40-man, there probably isn’t any regular time for Celestino. He could be a pinch runner and defensive replacement and fill in for Buxton, but that isn’t much of a role for a young guy. Gordon is probably the preferred option to pinch run and he can cover center if Buxton needs a day.

Hmmm.  I had forgotten about Upton being a FA.  I wouldn't mind him on the Twins roster for the veteran's minimum salary.

Celestino should definitely be returned to St Paul if he's going to be used that situationally.

Buxton's going to need at least a day....

Wow, is that ugly....

Willie McGee is a free agent at a spry age of 63, if you want to go the whole nine yards in the outfield.

Wish this was stickied, frankly.

Sonny Gray to the 10 day IL, Cody Stashak reinstated to the active roster.

Please, NO!  Please stay away from Strashak.

Send Larnach down and teach Celestino how to play Left Field.
