How high and long would you go for Ryu?

This FO is reliving my dating days in high school. Lots of interest, targeting an impact girlfriend. And striking out every time.

You gotta commit to at least 7 years but allow the opt-out clause after year 2, we keep telling ya. :)

Much like Falvine I want to keep financial and romantical flexibility

Watching MLBTR's chat today some poster stated that Korean media are reporting that the Twins are signing Ryu. No link was provided, but I thought it was odd that Steve Adams even responded to it.

I suppose Korea is so far ahead of us in time zones that we wouldn't hear about it until tomorrow. So far the news of the signing has probably barely reached Azerbaijan.

He's a Free Agency must (or Kuechel)... that can't be denied.

They can also trade for pitchers but that will only perpetuate the cycle of needing to over pay for a Ryu type in the future because they will lose the guys who can become the people who make the future Ryu type unnecessary.

Either way... you gotta pay with something to get something and we need something.

We got cash to spend right now... I'd spend it.

Agreed. Spend the money now, while you have it. End the potential cycle you reference before it can begin. (Then bring in a back end SP to add as well.)

If you really like Ryu, go get him. Pay the "stupidity tax" or whatever it's called, lol. But don't be foolish.

Boras has a job to do. Part of that job is helping put out mis-information to drive up value. Almost 3 yrs older than Bumgarner, spotty history of being available, and reports are he's "expected" to sign for more than MadBum? Please!

He SHOULD get 3yrs and $54M. Might have to go 3yrs and $60M to get it done, pay your tax, and just take care of business and move to the next objective. That is more than fair.

If things are that nuts out there, then maybe you consider a 4th year and go to about $72M but you absolutely front load the deal.

There is a difference between a stupid contract and an outright foolish one.

Steve Adams only response was that he found no verification. I hope it's true but Adams offered no validation whatsoever.

He was referring to the LG Twins of the Korean league  :)

Kris Atteberry said on the Wednesday hot stove that the Twins would have a big announcement in the coming days.

I'm fairly certain this is the article he was referring to.  It names a US blog as the source and says he's going to sign for 4 years and $73 million. A translation for the blog's name comes up as "Bleachery Port" which I'm guessing is supposed to be Bleacher Report but I can find no mention of the story on Bleacher Report.

Insurance only covers an entire missed season, not partial.
There is plenty that can go wrong that won't be covered by insurance.

Like all insurance, baseball insurance is a scam.

Insurance takes many forms. I believe the Twins policy on Nolasco kicked in at a certain number of DL days, far less than a full season.

But yeah, I don't know if it's particularly relevant to the equation here. Doesn't have to be, as pretty much any team can handle the downside of a 4/80 contract or whatever.

The Twins consider adding stops to the Winter Caravan a big announcement though.

my Google Translate attributed the source as “port of Blythe”. I didn’t know a UK Port would care so much about American Baseball ahead of Brexit!

See told you, the news is moving West. Our East Coast members might hear about it tomorrow morning when they wake up. Those of us in the Central Time Zone might have to wait until after our first cup of coffee though.

Gah. I may never hear it at that rate!

BREAKING: Caleb Thielbar, Rob Antony, and former Twins great Mike Maksudian will be appearing at the "C'mon Inn" in THIEF RIVER FALLS on January 15th. Mark your calendars!

Hopefully something happens soon, pitchers are flying off the board. Tehran signed, Gio Gonzalez gone, etc.... Twins still no one.

That would be a big deal up in those parts. I remember seeing Kirby at the TRF Best Western many moons ago.

Hence the "BREAKING" -- we use that word judiciously around here!

Myself, I saw Kevin Tapani at a Best Western caravan stop, but Carl Willis was a no-show. Still bitter -- Cleveland can have him!

To answer the OP question, I’d go up to $20/year for three years for Ryu. I’m not sure the Twins brass would give him a fourth year at that rate, and I’m not sure I would either.

He’s only been in the league six years. He had was very good his first year, and great last year. Other than that, nothing extraordinary. He doesn’t walk guys. But also remember that he played in a big park in the NL.

I’m not saying he’s bad, or a bad option. I’m just a little wary.

If I’m looking to get an impact pitcher in his early/mid 30s, I might look at Price before Ryu.

It kind of looks like the Front Office agreed. Ryu might be going downhill fast in years 3-4 of the deal Toronto just signed.

If the Red Sox throw in $12mm/ year on Price, the Twins can get him for 3/60, minimizing their exposure to the terrible tail end of a deal. Price also has a longer track record of success than Ryu.

Plus the Red Sox are motivated to shed payroll, as has been noted elsewhere, they might throw something else (prospects) in.

I don't think the Sox would have to give up prospects AND eat $36 million.

$20m/yr seems about what his value would be in this market.
