pierre75275 Verified Member Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 I think the Twins will get a starter and push Pineda to the bullpen and also acquire another bullpen arm. I doubt any of the pitchers acquired will be one yr rentals unless they get a second low end bullpen arm for a prospect flyer or cash considerations

h2oface Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 Just look at the Pressly trade. Houston didn't have to give up the farm, did they? Or is our FO just inept to let the prize we need go for middling prospects, and none of the other team's are?

As I wrote in disgust last night, the Twins should now be the experts at doing this kind of deadline deal.

Our staff could not develop his talents and our front office didn’t recognize it. I am not sure if that inept state is a static one.

Brandon Verified Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 Now that we let go our 4th reliever in the last few weeks today, I hope we get at least 2 relievers for the stretch run. If there was ever a time for us to go all in that time is now
Hosken Bombo Disco Community Moderator Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 I think it will not be Perez because they will be worried about Pineda innings limitPineda is not under contract with the Twins next season, so the front office will be more than happy to run him into the ground. I’m going to go out on a limb and say Perez will regain his first half mojo and has a chance to be the best starter going forward, after Berrios.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 I think it will not be Perez because they will be worried about Pineda innings limitVeterans rarely have any hard innings limit, even coming off of surgery. They'll proceed with caution, but I'd be shocked if they moved Pineda to the pen for this reason.

big dog Verified Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 If the item is an umbrella and it's pouring rain, and you don't have one, it doesn't really matter what you say, does it?Umbrellas are sold in a market at a fixed price. They also cost $5-$25. We're talking about negotiating with one seller who has something two or three or six teams might want, at an uncertain price, not standing in line at Target on a rainy day.
big dog Verified Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 That's fair and I don't think anybody would disagree with the discretion you are suggesting, but I think you are overestimating the secrecy and bluffing that is possible. This isn't poker or an auction or anything similar.I'm not estimating it at all, just saying that giving information away for free isn't a good negotiating strategy.
bird Verified Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 I want to thank those of you who voiced your (sometimes quite harsh) criticism of Falvey here without demonizing him or engaging in classless name-calling. It's hard (impossible?) to defend how this FO proceeded to fix the bullpen this off-season, or so far during the season. We may not like the decisions they make here over the next few days, but we won't have an answer about the wisdom of it all until the season's over, right? I'm not advocating an approach of mostly relying on things like Thorpe or Smeltzer coming through, Cody Allen being fixed, Hildenberger coming back from injury in peak form, or Stashak or Littell becoming reliable arms, but I have no idea how Derek Falvey and gang are setting the odds on these things, and LaVelle sure as heck isn't going to tell me. I hated the inaction this off-season, maybe because of the deja vu effect, and would hate inaction now for the same reasons, but... When I come back inside and read words like fraud, liar, huckster, cheap, blah blah blah, I want to head right back out to watch some more birds.
Loosey Verified Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 The Athletic posted a story that is quite different from what was said in the Darren Wolfson interview. In the radio interview it was made to sound like only supplemental adds will occur. Now The Athletic story is saying no one is untouchable, even Lewis or Kiriloff. Basically, if they can get an impact player who is controllable they will trade a very good asset. Two Quotes from the Athletic Story: “You never know what the other end of the phone call is,” Falvey said. “I just think that every player has a value to us based on how many years of control that player coming back has, how impactful we think the player is — not just for this season but for seasons ahead. That makes a big difference.“We always have to be factoring all of the variables in the equation, and I wouldn’t rule out any particular asset we have in our organization.” “Everything’s about the cost of acquisition,” Falvey said. “Would we consider rentals? Certainly. But I would say that we obviously are going to be thoughtful about how much future value you’re giving up for that type of asset. Some of the early focus might be more on longer-term, controlled players, but we’re certainly going to look at the rental options, too.”
Darius Verified Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 Speaking of missing the point, Hand and Chapman both blew it, so, no guarantee whoever the Twins get is going to solve what appears to be a league wide problem. I'm not saying the Twins don't need help, I'm saying what help is available might not really move the needle as much as we'd like. The Pocket Protectors never cease to amaze. We’re now pointing to a rare blown save from two of the most dominant relievers of our generation to cover for the Twins being too cheap to improve the club. Sure it’s a league wide problem. But did you see what Kahnle did to us last night? We don’t have a guy with stuff like that, and they have 5 (Rogers gets close, but clearly isn’t there in terms of raw stuff to overpower a hitter). You’re right, basically no difference between Kahnle, Ottavino, Britton, Green, Betances (when healthy), and Chapman vs. Tyler Duffey, Trevor May, Blake Parker, Ryne Harper, and Taylor Rogers. If Rogers pitched for the Yankees, he’d get the 6th inning twice a week. He’s throwing the 8th and 9th 4 times a week here (not so much anymore, since we can’t hold a lead). The other guys wouldn’t have made it out of spring training.
Whammy Verified Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 PR speak? I'd say it's the only possible answer that the person asking the question can expect to receive. That doesn't make it true OR false, just completely meaningless to analyze and report.
bird Verified Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 Imagine how much better Houston would be in the future if they hadn't traded prospects for Cole, Verlander, Presley, Osuna, Díaz Imagine how much better the Twins would be in the future if they were proven to be as brilliant as Houston has been at winning trades in a sick landslide. What other organization stacks up to their trade record? Not many. Clearly not the Twins under the former or current FO, right? Both sides of trades matter.

rdehring Verified Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 Twins just completed a trade before next week's deadline. Traded Brian Navarreto to the Yankees for and unknown return...probably more cash. Doesn't mean much of anything as he isn't a key prospect, isn't likely to be put on the 40-man and would be a free agent in 40 days, thus, probably gone.

You have some points in your post I don't necessarily disagree with, but this is just untrue. I'm sure you remember Britton well from his dominant seasons years ago with Baltirmore, but Rogers is a significantly better pitcher than him, and has been for a couple of years. And that's just focusing on the lefty set-up man. I won't get into how he's better than Chad Green, or Tommy Kahnle who has "significantly better stuff" than anyone else and his nearly 7 era from last season
