Mistaken outside report: Willians Astudillo Optioned?

Willians Astudillo was optioned after Sunday's game. So far I've only seen scout report this, but it looks to be true. It was fun having him back while it lasted.

My guess is Buxton will be ready to come of the IL on Tuesday. I assume that by optioning Astudillo today, he gets another day of at bats in AAA.

I don't think this report is accurate, there's been no official transaction on the Twins page and the Scout.com report references Astudillo hitting .250 and 2 HR which would be in line with when he was first optioned on June 8th.  I think something else in that article was updated to prompt this looking like a current move.

I don't think Astudillo is really the caliber of player that teams worry about with regard to day-by-day service time implications.

But I have to admit I was confused as well, especially after he homered and did fairly well on Wednesday last week after being called back up.

I did modify the thread title to reflect the uncertain validity of the report. As you said, we can remove it if events prove otherwise, although by that point there might not be much harm to it either if everyone is willing to have a laugh about it.

Take a look around at some of the other profiles on this site. This also says Nelson Cruz was added to the IL over the weekend, which has not been announced. They have another article that says Max Kepler left yesterday's game early and was replaced by Marwin Gonzalez, who is on the IL.

 

It appears all their articles say they were updated 7 hours ago, but it appears to me these are all old articles. So I'd agree with DiscGolfer, that Willians one was probably from when he was originally optioned.

I get 4/13 for Astudillo's 4 games since call up, with one homer and 3 singles - .308 for average (and .308 is also great, yes?), and he was 3/4 the first game, so 1/9 the last 3 - .111 average. Maybe just call him up for one game at a time, and get the 3/4 repetitively? Or send he back as soon as he goes o-fer, as his start of the season was great for the first week. Small samples are fun to play with, that's for sure. Extended samples probably more reliable, but it is hard to get extended at bats if you aren't a higher salaried player, if you don't produce with regularity.

I don't think teams generally make a move like this 2 days in advance. If Buxton had a setback and wasn't ready Tuesday night, Astudillo would be ineligible to come back. Maybe not a huge risk, but certainly not worth it to get Astudillo an extra day of AAA at-bats.

I choose to use his four games he was up and the 20 games of solitaire he lost in a row on his flight from Rochester. 0-20 is going to kill your average.

 

Jokes aside, I like Astudillo and in just about every other year he'd be on the 25-man all season long. But more than I like Astudillo, I like this team's depth. If Buxton and Garver are coming back I don't mind which of Astudillo or Cave stays.

If the larger size included time spent demoted in AAA and the conversation is about how the well the guy is playing today, yes, the smaller sample size is the one to use.

 

Since returning to Minnesota, Astudillo has started three games and played in four games, accruing 13 plate appearances. His slash is:

Super small sample size there but he's been just fine since the recall.

Since starting the season 6-9 Astudillo has hit .224. (another way of looking at it.)

 

(And if that dropped fly in right keeps Cave up that says more about Astudillo than it does about Cave, sadly.)

I'm a little surprised Astudillo was the first one sent back instead of Cave. Maybe the thinking is that Buxton may need days off as his wrist heals and Cave has to be there as the 4th OF? That would also suggest that Gonzalez may be a little farther out than the 5 or 6 days left on his IL stint. 

 

My fantasy is that this is all part of a deal with the SF Giants where Cave is part of a package for pitching (as a second or third piece). Ah, to dream..... 

Probably makes more sense to have 4 OFers than 3 catchers. Guessing Garver must be feeling better and Buxton is ready to come off the IL. Astudillo in the OF is... less than ideal.

2 things...

 

1. I see Astudillo in the starting lineup tonight, so the article originally referenced was obviously old.

 

2. What a weird turn this thread took regarding sample size and quoting statistics. I think it's pretty obvious what happened with Astudillo... he started really hot, cooled off big time, was sent down to AAA, hit the lights out in AAA, and has been doing pretty well in the four games since being recalled. There were some stats quoted in this thread that weren't really given the proper context.
