Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 One of the better beat reporters for the Twins. Gonna miss him.
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 He had good insights/connections but I never much cared for him so I'm ok.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 He seemed like the most balanced Twins journalist. On the scale of being a complete homer and being eye-rollingly critical, Berardino seemed to be really good at staying on the fulcrum.
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 Easily the best Twins beat writer, ran rings around the STRib guys. Sorry to see him go.
PseudoSABR Verified Member Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 Too bad. Both in terms of getting facts out and developing the personal and emotional aspects of a story, he was the team's best beat writer in my memory.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 I hate Notre Dame, and like Mike's writing, so this is doubly painful for me.....
SF Twins Fan Verified Member Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 He's by far the most informative writer at one of the local papers but his demeanor always rubbed me the wrong way for some reason. Just doesn't seem to be a friendly person.
Hosken Bombo Disco Community Moderator Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 Huge loss, in my opinion.
Doomtints Verified Member Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 After Lou Holtz did good things with the Gophers and moved on to Notre Dame, so will Berardino.
jkcarew Verified Member Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 I hope his replacement is decent, because contributing in any way to the existence of the startribune is not an option for me.
jimmer Verified Member Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 I hate Notre Dame, and like Mike's writing, so this is doubly painful for me.....I love Notre Dame and love Mike's writing so good news.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2018 Author Posted September 24, 2018 I hope whoever replaces Berardino doesn't come in and write fluff pieces like Dan Hayes at the Athletic.
LaBombo Verified Member Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 He seemed like the most balanced Twins journalist. On the scale of being a complete homer and being eye-rollingly critical, Berardino seemed to be really good at staying on the fulcrum. In addition to that delicate positive/negative balance, he also seemed pretty adept at working about the right amount of stat-based material into his writing, keeping the eyes of the casual part of his audience from glazing over but not giving it a dumbed down vibe for Fangraphs weirdos like me. Wish him well in his new endeavor. Despite his destination.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 Also sad: this is a pretty clear indication that despite being a professional franchise, the Twins are below some (probably lots of) college football teams in the sports hierarchy.

It's a lot more complicated than this -- but I'll leave it at that.
Brandon Warne Verified Member Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 Distressing news to me because Mike has been a tremendous mentor and role model on the beat. But for him personally, I'm always going to root for him and am glad he's making this leap.

bird Verified Member Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 Bernardino was not only good, he was prolific. Meaning he was industrious. As much as I have a disdain for fluff, I have a bigger problem with the seeming lack of energy, courage, and curiosity I sense as present with the Strib group.

Either interpretation is a sign of the apocalypse.
Brandon Warne Verified Member Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 The Indinanapolis Star is a very, very highly regarded paper.

Brandon Warne Verified Member Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 I don't know what that means.

LEN 3 is very comfortable in his role with the team, and won't challenge authority. Phil Miller is just a guy. Never read or heard anything remotely controversial from him before.
bird Verified Member Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 The Indinanapolis Star is a very, very highly regarded paper. I suppose that might depend on who you ask. You might get a slightly less favorable opinion from people who are no longer there, including four sports writers who left for greener pastures within a month of each other, although that was awhile back and local management may have overcome Gannett and righted the ship somewhat. https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Indianapolis-Star-Reviews-E113298.htm The Pioneer Press has its own issues, but whether one or the other paper is of higher journalistic quality might be tough to argue either way. Like asking which of the cat lady's cats is more obedient. Congrats, Mr. Bernardino. Steer clear of the kool-aide in South Bend.
jimmer Verified Member Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 No Kool-aid in South Bend. Just beer and Irish whiskey...
