Michael Pineda update?

I think signing Pineda was a good move, even if he doesn't pitch at all this year. it's insurance for next year Sure, we're all impatient and want to see him before the season is finished, but at this point I'm not too bothered either way. I'd prefer to see him 100% healthy and ready to rock next year. As for the other starters I'd also prefer to keep Gibson and Odorizzi for next  year, and try to unload Lynn and Santana ASAP, or least before September.

A couple of new updates! Per Mike Berardino on Twitter.

He's now in Rochester! The plan is for him to make 3 starts and make his way to Minnesota in September.

I'm wondering if he'd be a trade candidate this winter if he pitches well in September. If a team is excited about his one year, afforable contract, there could be some interest...

It's possible. But why wouldn't the Twins be interested in his one year, affordable contract?

My sense is if they aren't thinking they'll be competitive and if Big Mike performs, they could get a few prospects for him, no?

Then trade at deadline. You know what kind of return you would get in the winter without him proving anything, it won't be much better if at all than a deadline trade. Either one would net very little. He's worth more to the Twins than a maybe guy in A ball.

There's no excuse for them not to feel like they're going to be competitive. They have $60m to spend, a slew of young players, and a good farm system.

I don't think he'd have that much value. He was available pretty cheaply last winter, and will hardly pitch this year.

Well he was available cheaply because he wasn't going to pitch this year... but yes I agree he probably wouldn't have much value

Right. What I meant was, if no one outbid the Twins last winter, it stands to reason that no one will be willing to give up meaningful prospects to acquire him and his contract this winter.

The Twins flipped players who were leaving anyway. They will add pieces in the offseason. Could they add a piece with more promise than Pineda? I doubt it. He'll stick around through at least the trade deadline next year.

But the Twins have already absorbed the 1 year of non-pitching. I don't think you can correlate his value last off season to his value this off season, since the hope is he will pitch all 2019

Would you rather buy a car you can drive off the lot, or one you can't get out of impound for 12 months?

Sorry, didn't mean to invoke value in that way. Just saying that very little information has changed in regards to Pineda since last offseason -- everyone knew he needed TJ, that he would get parked on the 60-day DL, and he would be returning late this year. He's not going to get to pitch enough in September to mean much either. A team deciding to pony up meaningful prospects for him this offseason would be similar to a newly-signed free agent getting traded in May -- it generally doesn't happen.

By invoking the contract, I just meant that teams probably wouldn't have changed their minds that much about Pineda since last offseason, that's all. (And that goes for the Twins too -- we signed him to be part of the 2019 rotation, and nothing has really changed from that. We certainly don't need to shed his salary, and no new SP have really emerged to take his place yet -- if anything, we might need him more now than we did back then.)

Not impressed so far with Stewart and Gonsalves.  Really think the Twins should be looking at May again as a starter.  He show cases much better stuff than either Stewart or Gonsalves.  Pineda's setback is not catastrophic, at least it's not related to his arm.

Were you impressed by Gibson's, May's, or Berrios' first 2 or 3 games? The ship has sailed on May being a starter.

Does he ever pitch for the Twins?  I'm genuinely curious what a time table would look like.

Timeline depends if the tear in the meniscus is repaired or removed. If it's repaired, it will impact his offseason training even though he theoretically would be fine by Spring Training. If it's removed, he'll have a normal off season and shouldn't be a factor.

No it's not, they just haven't given him the opportunity to do so this year (which is his first back from TJ surgery). I don't care about Gibson, May or Berrio's first 2 or 3 games I'm talking about Stewart and Gonsalves.
