Has it gotten so bad?  No game thread for me to lurk on, randomly comment in, and abandon?  I'm like David Duchovny (or was it someone else) in that classic SNL skit, where he keeps coming up with these great, witty comebacks, but he's always five minutes late and they've lost their appropriateness.  But then he invents a time machine, and uses it to go back and fix Paul Molitor's bullpen usage from earlier in the season, saving Reed's arm for the game last night.  

 

No, actually, he uses it to go back and deliver his now perfectly timed zingers.  Anyhow, the game is already started, so get cracking, 007!

Lineups:

 

Twins:  Same old same old.  Cave is playing.  Dozier batting 5th.  (kidding.)

 

Tigers:  Same as yesterday pretty much; two ex-Twins we wish were still Twins.  Fullmer pitching, so that run had better hold up.  (Who am I kidding--does it matter who is pitching?)

Grossman flashed his arm in right field last night, so we put him in left field today.  Robbie Grossman is a nice guy.  Last year, he had a great on base percentage and contributed with quality at bats.  Last year is not this year and his defense is still a liability to the team.  Offensively, he's been offensive.  Granted we've seen plenty of offensive offense this year, but we've seen his upside.  His best gets him into the batting order.  What he's doing now doesn't and we've got him there two games in a row.  We are not a good team if Robbie Grossman is our answer.

Much better inning by Lynn. ERA's under 5!

 

Considering that it was 8.37 on April 30, I'm impressed. Since that point, he's been at 3.05 heading into today.

If the Twins trade Lynn at the deadline, can the acquiring team use a qualifying offer on him, or does he automatically become a UFA at the end of the year?

I'd love to know the source.  And the methodology for the metric.  I haven't seen an 'official' metric along these lines.  Maybe I'm not looking in the right places.  Do I think the shift saves net runs?  Yes.  Would I trust a metric to rank or establish absolute value of the shift.  Not necessarily.  Lot of subjectivity (and/or assumptions and data that is hard to establish).  We'll see.

 

FWIW...my gut tells me the Twins really haven't saved more runs that every team (save one) with their use of the shift.  If for no other reason that the staff is near the bottom of the league with regard to their ground ball rate.

Just like Escobar, maybe we should think about holding on to Lynn beyond 2018. Because if healthy, the trio of Berrios, Santana, and Lynn all could have seasons of +200 innings pitched.
