Of course they're interested in him ... again

Last year Vargas had the flexibility of an option. I would think Napoli has to be here at the cost of Grossman. A bench of Garver, Napoli, Escobar and Adrianza is without options or an outfielder when carrying 13 pitchers. Zach Granite could be the shuttle guy in this scenario.

Who helps more? Napoli or Grossman? Would Austin Jackson fit the roster better than either of those two?

Agree that it would seem that Grossman would be the odd man out at that point, especially given that Adrianza, Garver, or even Escobar could play a corner spot in a pinch - a game or two, or until that shuttle guy could get in from Rochester.

Of the three, I think I'd probably want Jackson. I don't think bringing in a guy to whiff 150-200 times and hit less than .200 is worth what 25 HRs and "leadership" might cost.

If you pencil in Vargas as the DH, which I think they should (at least for the first month or so), and have a bench of Garver, Jackson, Escobar, and Napoli, I think you're in OK shape. Even if Sano has to start out the season as DH with Esco at 3rd, a bench of Vargas, Garver, Jackson, Adrianza wouldn't be awful.

I just don't get it. They sure seem to like their washed up veterans.

Most ML teams want veterans. For his career, Napoli has killed LH pitching and the one thing the Twins offense could use is a power RH bat. I don't think Napoli is it and I don't think we sign him. But I don't think we should worry before it actually happens.

The other possibility is that Napoli and Darvish where teammates in TX.  Possibility of appealing to Darvish with someone he knows on the team.  Dunno.  Just spitballing.

Not saying that is a reason to sign him, just an added bonus if they are looking for a veteran right handed bat anyway.

What he has done in the past and what he would do next year aren't the same. Plus he has no true position. Hard pass.

Well, they got their reclamation guy (Pineda) and their old pitcher (Rodney), now they are interested in the old position hitter past his time who cant play D(Napoli). Trying to pull the Twins FA trifecta.

Is Grossman or Vargas the odd man out? Napoli can spell Mauer at 1B same as Vargas and both can DH and thats it. Grossman can atleast play a gross OF so there is some versatility there and grossman can spell Kepler while Napoli spells Mauer against tough lefties.

I'm good with a Napoli signing cause he does fill a need. He shouldn't cost much. Maybe 3 million plus 2 million in incentives. And maybe 1 or 2 million more and thats it.

They also traded for 2 prospects and signed another as a FA.

And dont forget the Bartolo signing is just around the corner too.

Would Grossman be the odd man out? Napoli, Mauer, Vargas, Sano. Lots of guys for first base and DH but we do need a right handed guy. I don't think Grossman did much after the all star break.

Sure would be nice to sign Napoli, Darvish and then get Addison Reed to eat up innings in the bullpen.

Not really a fan of this move; I'll just say what I said last year, why can't the "leadership" traits be found in better quality free agents?

I guess the silver lining would be that the team must feel pretty confident in Sano's ability to reclaim 3B if they are willing to give a 25-man spot to a guy can only play 1B.

I imagine if Sano were to move from 3B to DH then someone would be on the move. Likely Napoli either trade, benching or release.

Im ok with the signing as long as he gets platooned against RH pitchers. He is on the downside of his career and his value to us is balancing the lineup vs lefties.

i don't want Napoli, but if they do sign him I hope he's better at hitting lefties than he was last year. Last year he couldn't hit anything.

I have no interest in Napoli. Where did the Twins get the 'veteran leadership' that got them to the Wild Card playoff game last year? Are those guys gone?

Vargas has been a better hitter than Napoli for 2 years. He also posted a higher bWAR AND fWAR last year than Napoli.

This is counting on a bounce-back year from a 36 year old. I don't like it.

Hypothetical Napoli puts the 40 man at 40 right? I don't think Kinley is going to be here for long...

Yes. And they may have signed Zach Duke as well.

He's broken many Twins signings, including Rodney, so no reason to believe it's false at this point. Hopefully Duke is a minor league deal, otherwise someone is definitely gone soon if they plan to sign/trade for anyone else.

All of those veteran mentors are gone. I guess they need new veteran mentors.
