Shaitan Verified Member Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 Congrats to Mr. Gardy. It's too bad it's within the division, though.
Homer Hanky Verified Member Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 It will be fun to see who he picks for his staff...
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 Not sure he’s the manager for a rebuild. His inclination is to play veterans over inexperienced players. He also has a history of throwing inexperienced players “under the bus” when they make mistakes- as all inexperienced players do. IMO, he was poor at putting players in position to succeed. Jacque Jones as a leadoff hitter for example. Doug Mientkiewicz (and Joe Mauer frankly) as third place hitters. One that perfectly sums up Gardenhire’s ineffectiveness though is when Michael Nakamura made his MLB debut. Instead of bringing him into a low leverage situation, he entered the game in a save situation. Keep in mind, this was not an uber prospect or a future closer. He had a deceptive motion similar to Neshek or Hildenberger. And then a week or so later, was brought into a game without warming up because Gardy made a second coaching visit in an inning. I have no idea if the way he was handled shortened his career or not. I don’t think it helped.Gardy played young guys over vets nearly all the time. He didn't throw players under the bus, he kept most of it in-house. Molitor has done far more of that in his three years than Gardy did his entire time. The Gardy bashing has gotten out of hand over the years. He was a very good manager.

And yes, Gardy definitely berated young players in the press. No, I don’t have links to 10-15 year old articles. Ask anyone here who was around during the BYTO days. They’ll remember.
jimmer Verified Member Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 Gardy didn't throw players under the bus? Hmmmm. I must have been watching different post game presses conferences.

Once they were up, he stuck with them for long stretches even when they were struggling. Developed them quite nicely. And Gardy berating young players in the press is easily the most overrated narrative around him. As a long time poster on BYTO, I can assure you the posters were not infallible, they exaggerated this kind of stuff as much as happens here.

His age 22 season was about the only time he sat much

Ask anyone here who was around during the BYTO days. They’ll remember. He played the young guys. Look at his rosters. Lohse had a 144 starts through his age 25 season. In another thread, we noted that vets made about 8% of all starts for the Twins from 02-10 and that counts Radke's two free agent seasons. It's an absolute lie that Gardy played vets over his young guys. You can't change the nucleus of a team like the Twins did without relying on the young players. And yes, I've been following the Twins back in the days and the BYTO forum were full of some of the dumbest most negative posters around. Those posters found negatives in the most neutral comments he made. The ESPN forums were much better (which tells you something). The manager that is throwing players under the bus has been Molitor not Gardy.
spinowner Provisional Member Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 During the 2002 through 2010 seasons Gardenhire received more weighted Manager of the Year votes than any other AL manager, and I think more than any other manager in either league. Yes, I know there were four more years after that but it's difficult to get MOY votes when one is managing bad teams. The point is that his managing skills were very highly-regarded by those voters.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 I don't see this job lasting long. Not because of Gardenhire, just because that team looks like it's due to be a loser for a long stretch and the manager (and probably GM) will be out of there just prior to getting back on track.

It has a fiasco of a year and Gardy not back in 2019 written all over it. Tigers are going to be really bad no matter who is at the controls.

Doomtints Verified Member Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 Congratulations to Gardy, but hiring him seems like confirmation that Detroit isn’t worried about winning a playoff series. ?The Twins never spent the money to win in the playoffs. They spent just enough to beat up on the division.

Continuing to do it the same way won’t work.

The votes were cast because others believed Gardy was weaving a pig's ear into a silk scarf rather than being the manager of a solid team.
DocBauer Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2017 Posted October 21, 2017 Personally, I liked Gardy as a person and as a manager. IMO, a few comments he made here and there in the press were greatly exagerated and misconstrued. But these are also memories and viewpoints that are irrelevant. Congrats! But I just don't see the fit. He's a good baseball guy who is going to be stuck with a sinking and rebuilding roster and I'm just not sure it's his forte. But best of luck Gardy...except when you face the Twins!

Very good managers have many rings. Gardy has zero as a manager, including in post-seasons when the Twins were favorite and spotted both the MVP and Cy Young award winners. He was very good in going belly up against the Yankees. That much I give you. B. Pat Neshek, Scott Baker, Kevin Slowey, Matt Garza, Delmon Young, Kyle Lohse, et al. would beg to disagree about that under bus throwing thing and the keeping most of the stuff "in house".
h2oface Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2017 Posted October 21, 2017 I guess Twins' fans have come to accept regular season wins as good enough. Not the Red Sox and Nationals. I tend to think like their front offices. Sometimes, the manager has a good team, and gets in the way of it doing better because he has people playing out of position all the time, and not for injury's sake. Sometimes he just gets in the way of letting players be themselves. I am glad Gardenhire is taking his way to the Tigers. My bet is he makes 2 years at the most.
Blake Verified Member Posted October 21, 2017 Posted October 21, 2017 Not a good comp Seth. Torre took over a very good playoff team. Gardy is taking over the worst team in the league, just starting a re-build with a middling farm system. In other words, familiar territory for Mr. Gardenhire.
Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted October 22, 2017 Posted October 22, 2017 In other words, familiar territory for Mr. Gardenhire. Not quite. Gardenhire took a decent team from Kelly and ran with it wining just enough to pay the bills for the new ballpark until he ran it to the ground and made it the worst team in the league.

They could wind up threatening their 43-119 from 2003.
