Kyle Gibson optioned

Well, it appears that Bartolo Colon will continue to pitch after his five inning, three-run outing on Monday night in LA. The club announced that Kyle Gibson was being optioned to Rochester to make room for Jaime Garcia.

Gibson threw 7 shutout innings against the Tigers on Saturday night.

I'm surprised. I thought it would be Mejia, for now, to get him back on track. Not that NOT having Gibson around is disheartening. Okay...let's see what Colon can continue to do!

This has Molitor's fingerprints all over it.  His preference for old vets combined with saddling Gibson with the "B" squad on "rest days".  It's not as if Gibson couldn't replace anybody (everybody?) in the bullpen either.

Weird move. Colon appears to now have one main pitch, an arm-side bending 2-seamer in the mid 80's. It's a darn good SECONDARY pitch, but after a few innings hitters figure it out and start smashing it all over the park. Gibson, for all his early struggles, appears to be pitching better lately. Colon's "upside" is what we saw tonight - a few innings of good results, then an inning of luck, then BOOM.

The best thing for the Twins would probably be for Colon to go to the pen and try to teach guys his little two-seamer. If one guy learns that pitch, it could make him much more effective...combined with a decent fastball and a good curve.

Another head scratcher. I can't stand Colon. What a waste. Watching him stand at the plate and watch all those pitches go by without even moving. A total joke. Hell, just bunt it and maybe they make an error if you don't want to swing. It looked worse in the stands than it did on TV.

It did look bad from the stands. On the other hand, his pitching seemed effective for the first few innings. Maybe he could be an effective reliever?

Also, his bunt was better than most that I have seen this season from the position players.

Well, a bit of a head scratcher.

On one side, Colon pitcher better.  But still, a very short outing that exploded.

On the other, I can't stand Gibson anymore.  Given a lead, Gibson gives it right back.

My vote:  pick none of the above.

Twins should still be shopping for pitching.

If you want Colon in the bullpen, here's a scenario for you:  Close game, Colon is brought in with a runner on 1st.  Batter lays down a bunt.  What happens next?  I'm gonna say;  pretty ugly.    :(

He looked good tonight until the wheels came off. And he took care of the one bunt against him.

I'm just saying that it might be worth a try. If he can be good as a reliever for 2 or 3 innings at a stretch and can teach a trick or two to the younger pitchers, he might add value.

I don't agree with this. I would have told Colon you can be long relief or we'll release you. The only thing worse would have been demoting Mejia

It appears he covers first better than Mejia.

..... and now you get the axe. Just when you have a fine outing....  I really don't get it. If Gibson is so horrible, at least wait until the next egg is laid, which if he is so horrible, will happen soon. If it doesn't, then we win. I want better pitching, but Colon is not that. Give him a shot in the pen if he will take it. Garcia added to the staff, fine. Demote players after a performance that earns the demotion, not right after they shine.

To me this is clearly about depth. Gibson went down because he could.

Colon in the majors and Gibson ready for the next injury > Gibson in the majors and random AAAA guy next up.

There could also be a "Colon can help mentor the young guys" vibe going on. We know the FO is big on that.

This almost has to be about roster flexibility. I am not a Gibson fan. He has "stuff", he just gets nothing out of it. But as noted above, he finally pitches a really nice game, and POOF, he ends up in NY, and I don't mean with the Yankees. Really weird. But I guess it's understandable. Colon has been outstanding, getting us unscathed through the first four innings. You on the other hand, Gibson is normally only good for about four innings before he falls apart. Easy decision! :)

Gibson has a 5.52 FIP (and an ERA over 6.00).  He has a WAR of -0.1.

Last year, Gibson had a 4.40 FIP (and an ERA over 5.00).

I'm not sure why there is any problem with his demotion.  Should have happened a long time ago.  If anything, the team was TOO patient with him.

If Molitor preferred vets, wouldn't he have wanted Mejia sent down?

I would have sent down Mejia, but I'm not especially offended by Gibson.

I do like giving Colon another start or two.

Sadly, he hung around due to the lack of better options...

So what are Colon's numbers?

Not a Gibson fan, gives up way too many bad starts, expect him to be non-tendered.  That will help free up money.  New FO is getting up a head of steam and starting to clear out the player who have been here way too long.

It was really between Mejia and Gibson, at least they made the right choice there. Clearly they wanted to have the extra starter and they could keep them all if one of those two (or Berrios) were sent down.

All things being equal, I'd rather see Gibson in the rotation ahead of Colon and Garcia,* but all things are not equal.

*Not that I really want Gibson in the rotation.

Really this is the evil you know vs. the evil you're still not 100% sure about. I'm not a fan of Colon, and I don't know how the Twins can pretend they haven't seen enough of him this season to know he shouldn't be starting games. I think both pitchers have about the same floor at this point, but "Good Gibson," has a higher ceiling. That isn't a strong push to have Gibson back, or a defense of him in any way, but if I was forced to choose between the 2, which the Twins are right now, I think I would've moved Colon or just let him retire if chose to.

What were his numbers over his last 8 or so starts though?

When he comes to the mound, I at least feel like we have a chance of a decent performance.  With Colon, it's just by luck and by golly that we escape, just need our fielders to be in the right places at the right times.

I have felt the same way about Gibson for years. Of course, I am not on the Colon bandwagon, but he just got here and he will be gone NLT end of season. Right around the time that, hopefully, Gibson is gone from the organization as well.

I thought Atlanta wanted to move him to the pen and he said no and that was why he was released?

Yeah, this. I'm confused why anyone cares whether the Twins chose Bad Option A or Bad Option B.

I'm hoping this shuffling of chairs continues and Gonsalves ends up on the MLB team in early August.
