Kyle Gibson optioned

Colon wasn't an option at this point. I think they promised him a certain minimum number of starts when they signed him.

Its fine to be against that move, but its already been made, they aren't going to spoil their rep by breaking promises to a well respected vet like Colon.

The choice for now was Gibson vs. Mejia.

Colon will get 2 to 3 more starts, and if he's still bad it'll be between Gibson and Santiago at that point.

Yes this, my whole stance at this point is that when you are in a playoff run I think you need to throw the promises to the side. That is my whole argument.

And I think if they had a significantly better option they'd consider breaking that promise.

But, since the other options are only slightly better, they probably see no reason to risk hurting their rep.

I personally think Gonsalves would be an upgrade, but if they agreed with me in that regard they never would have signed Colon in the first place.

Right, after Berrios, there is no Twins starting pitcher right now significantly better than any other. Given that Colon is a fact of life right now, I'd like to endure only one more of his starts before the Twins part ways.

And Gibson is probably going to be a tough arbitration case this off season; at this point I'd think he's very unlikely to get tendered. He's not going to be able to make a case for himself in Rochester.

The well might be too poisoned in Minnesota for him anyway, due to his own results of course. If he does figure it out it might be inevitable that it's after he leaves here.

Maybe. And if that's the case, good luck to him in the future. I find it fascinating that a pitcher like 31 year old Mike Pelfrey was run out of town because he had zero upside. And nearly 30 year old Gibson is still advertised as having potential who deserves a long leash.

But they were in said playoff race at the time they made the promise.

I think people are overestimating how easy it would be to tell every future FA that your word means absolutely nothing.

The problem isn't keeping their promise. We should all respect and understand that.

The problem is making the promise in the first place.

And that is a completely legit complaint. I was never a fan of the previous FO doing that either.

No, this Bartolo Colon situation is a far cry from any future free agency signing.

The Twins need pitching for 2018, neither Colon nor Garcia will be back. Gibson is eligible for arbitration and would probably be cheaper than other pitchers on the open market, not necessarily better. The free agent market doesn't look good. I think they really need to find out if Gibson can be improved over the last 2 months of the season and Triple A is probably a better place. We have four nearly ready potential starters in the minors in Romero, Gonsalvez, Jorge and Slegers. Probably only two will make it and they will struggle next year. Right now our 2018 rotation looks like Gibson(?), Berios, Mejia, uh & duh. Yeah Santana is still here but I expect him to be traded and unfortunately we let the best window for that pass us by (again).

Any guesses on what Gibson will cost in Arbitration?

Well, Gibson is at $2.9 mil now. Milone went from $2.775 to $4.5, but he had a decent year.

Depending on how he finishes, maybe $3-4 mil? In the unlikely event that he doesn't reach 4 years service time, and he is in the same service time cohort as last year, maybe he gets the same salary ($2.9) or a small cut?

Don't understand why Colon is still on the team. Upside side on him is 5 or 6 innings with a few runs at the absolute best.

Colon has pitched more than 5 innings in 3 of his 15 starts this year. (and they all were in April)

Gibson has pitched more than 5 innings in 9 of 18 and all since May 28th (9 out of 11)

He is exactly what you would expect out of a number 5 starter. Pitch decent get though 5 anything more is gravy and throw in a few clunkers.

Gibson in his last 10 games has average a hair under 6 innings, and Molitor has pulled him at the first sign of trouble.

Would I like an upgrade over him? absolutely! Is Colon that guy?, I bet not.

I don't disagree with your conclusion, but the premise (the promise premise, heh) is unknowable. Unless someone in the FO has actually said they made such a promise to Colon, which I'm unaware of it that's the case. Otherwise this is something we've invented.

Nobody has mentioned what I think is still a very logical situation for Colon. Sign with the promise of three starts before the 31st.

Pitches well and the Twins are in the race -- keep him.
Pitches well and the Twins fade -- someone will take him in a trade for a lottery pick and Gibson is back up.
Pitches lousy -- gets released and Gibson is back up.

One day at a time, folks.

The problem with this logic is that the Twins are in a race and do not have their best starters, the people who will give them the highest probability of winning, starting.

Who cares for the 10% possibility that they might get a C prospect for Colon?

As far as I am concerned, Gibson is only back on a min contract (not arbitration). It might be tough to fix pitching during the season but I HOPE that the FO doesn't have Gibson in any part of its plans for next season.

With that said, I still think Gibson is the 5th best SP the Twins have available.  I don't think Gibson is good but I think Colon is awful and Santiago is irreparably damaged. I am guessing that there is some sort of agreement for a real chance with Colon and if you cut him then he isn't an option later. Gibson can still be called back up and almost certainly will. GEHT REHDDDDDDDY!

Just saw the write up on Santiago's rehab start. Ish.

It's harder to justify Colon staying in the rotation if Santiago isn't on the way back.

But I'm still done with Gibson. Call up Gonsalves and let it fly.

So with the trade.... I like it, but don't like to see Gibson sent down for the 44 year old who has had 2 games and can't get past 5 innings of work!!! Also Gibson just had his best game over 7 innings of work. His ERA this month would look better if the runners left on wouldn't all score when our pen takes over!

Gibson is routinely the unfortunate odd-man out. He lays eggs game after game, but the second he strings together a couple of good starts he gets sent to the minors!
