Bert will be back in 2017 and 2018, but with even fewer games

I'd go for Paul Allen and Sid Hartman.

Even though Paul Allen is Barney the purple dinosaur who worships the Vikings, he's very entertaining to listen to during games.

I think some of the angst over the dynamic duo is that they have been forced to try and make a silk purse out of a sows ear for too many consecutive years. They are club employees and have limited options. Yes Bremers tendency to judge the distance of a routine fly ball by the color of the uniform who hit it, and Berts downward plane have worn thin. But take out the "homer" equation and they are listenable. Something which under no scenario would I consider Dandy Dan Gladden to be. When he is on I turn down the sound, and just watch the radio!

It's a crime in my book that MLB won't stream in-market games. Their option of just listening to the ambient ballpark noise is the best. With all the infographics these days, you don't need anything else.

I don't know their names, but there was a couple younger guys doing Spring Training guys that were pretty good.  They sometimes got a little too big on themselves...

DickBert are fine, the hand wringing that goes over them is just so ridiculously over the top that it makes people look like a bunch of whiners.

The problem with watching a Twins broadcast is that more often than not you are going to see a terrible product on the field the last 5 years. Not even Vin Scully could make the 2016 Twins watchable.

Amen to that.  The broadcast booth has really been a sadistic torture chamber for 5 of the last 6 years.

Lot of hate for a guy whose only role is as a color guy.  I'm guessing a lot of the haters don't remember the days of Frank Quilici & Harmon in the booth.  The real question is "Can he pitch?"

Maybe you're just more optimistic than I am.  I can tell you that when I talk to people who consider themselves big baseball fans and I start throwing around any advanced metric they have no clue what I'm talking about.

Did those people work in the Twins front office?

Perhaps the Twins choice in TV and Radio announcers is really a ploy to get fans to stop watching on TV and go the games.  Big conspiracy, I think it needs some investigation.

Really Dave you are complaining about ridiculously over the top hand wringing?

Maybe they can bring in TK to do some color commentary...He can do it with a big wad of chew in his mouth.  Does anyone remember the TK bits they did on KQRS years ago?

Just listened to one on YouTube.  Hilarious!

TK has mellowed somewhat. His colour commentary is fairly decent. But during his managerial tenure, woe to the fool who called in to his Sunday morning show to question a managerial maneuver from the preceding week. Wihe Sid was his fawning and protective self, TK was brusque, bordering on rude if anyone had the audacity to question one of his infallible decisions! :)

Man, for a second I thought you were talking about Gardy in postgames.

You are in luck. I am currently seated on my (moms) couch in moms basement. I am a huge conspitialist, and have finally gotten to the truth about why Mrs. Lincoln really asked Abe to go to that play. When I wrap this up I have a few loose ends to tie up on why Sasquatch changed his name to Bigfoot, and then I may delve into this. While I really think you are onto something, what first has to be resolved is the fact fans haven't been driven to the games by Dick/Bert. I intend to do some extensive research into that fact, and once I find the answer work backwards to the booth issue! :)

The shoe would have fit also. I seldom listened to post game shows but Gardy wasn't much better on Sunday morning. Nor do I think Sid helped at all. I wonder how often Sid questioned the coaching résumé of his callers. I finally quit listening.

I'd love to see them hire someone who actually gets the big picture of baseball like Doogie Wolfson or Phil Mackey.  Maybe Brandon Warne is interested.  Or even Seth Stohs.

With drinks....Seth could be the next Halsey Hall...I was too young to know he (Halsey) was drunk, but I always enjoyed him.

GOOOOO Seth!!!!!

I don't have a problem with play by play the problem is that it hard to put positive light on such a team of poorly played baseball. There job is not to say what is wrong with Twins and how it should be fixed and who needs to improve. They are hired by Twins ownership and management to just put as much a positive spin on Twins baseball as they can. When you have experienced 5 years like we have had it doesn't make them credible to the fan. I willing to bet that if you could get there real opinions on what needs to be fix and what individuals need to brought to task they could tell you. I am betting there being around team and traveling with the team they can see what's wrong and also talking to other media people about the Twins they may have more knowledge than anybody what's wrong with the Twins. I think ownership some times should talk to these people on qt. to find out going on with there teams as well as some of the other support people involved with the Twins. Like some have said I don't want whole bunch of statistics for play by play I like it to something that is fun to listen too and maybe has enough analysis of what team is doing. I think sometimes they could also take point of analysis of what other team may be trying to do counter what the Twins are doing or what the Twins are doing to counter what the other team is doing. I think that has been problem at least last couple years I don't think Twins have been following what they say are doing and how do you as play by play man point this out and keep your job if you are going against team or coaches get be able to get information they need to do there job. Also this is not football where you can be more critical because this where your with a team for 150 + games not just 16 and once a week.

I've heard that Vin Scully is available!

OK, maybe not.  Anyway, Bremer actually isn't that bad.  Travel around a bit and listen to other homer broadcasts and you'll learn to appreciate him.  Bert is Bert just as the Dazzleman is the Dazzleman.  Bert was a goofball in the dugout and now he's a goofball in the booth.  Gladden wouldn't be a good fit IMO.  He was high energy in the dugout and he can get kind of excited when things don't go well (he's been excited a lot the last few years) on the field.

I think back to the days of listening to Hawk Harrelson for the White Sox and I can tell you that no one made me appreciate our announcers more than him.

I've listened to all of them quite a bit.  Hawk is the worst, for sure, and Toronto and Philly announcers are horrible as well.  There are some truly good ones, though.

Why must we limit broadcasters to those "with a Minnesota connection"? There are lots of people, even those with actual major league baseball experience, who could make a lively, entertaining, and occasionally informative listening experience. It's past time that "homegrown" is best! Gosh, I remember listening to Don Drysdale (announcing for the Sox) when I was living in Chicago--he was awesome! Great voice, authoritative, and entertaining. He didn't have a "Chicago connection"--but he was a d--- sight better than anybody I ever heard announcing for the Twins.

When I've heard Bert on a Fox Game of the Week national game he's actually decent. For the Twins, yeah, everyone else has already said it. The jokes weren't funny 10 years ago.

At one point Tommy John did Twins games - no Minnesota connection there.  Personally I was really disappointed when Ryan Lefebvre left for KC - I would welcome him back in a heartbeat.

Posted

He's not necessarily a tv guy, but I love to listen to Tom Kelly's analysis. He's also not afraid to criticize bad player performances.

I am not sure about anyone else, but I enjoyed Jim Kaat. But even he would not have sounded his best describing the last several years of TwinsWorld. The only one up to that task would have been the fictional Harry Doyle. And it's doubtful even he could drink that much. :)

mlb.tv is a separate corporation from Major League Baseball.  mlb.tv is essentially licensed content to stream from the MLB.  This means the MLB is putting MLB ownership interests before the interests of mlb.tv.

If the owners owned mlb.tv, things would be different.

This really isn't right. MLB Advanced Media is entirely owned, as a partnership, by the team owners.

The blackouts have nothing to do with the owners, and everything to do with existing media contracts, plus the deeper penetration that network and cable television have as compared to streaming media.

If I had a $20 bill for every time Bert said a pitcher "left the ball up" when in fact the pitcher did NOT actually leave the ball anywhere in the upper half of the strike zone when giving up another bomb, I would buy everyone on TD their very own copy of the next TD Prospect Handbook.

Lazy and feckless. Both of them.
