Who should be the next GM?

Now that Ryan is out, and Antony likely is as well (reading between the lines, timing etc), its time to start looking for a new GM and the future.

It's going to be hard to get any of the "elite" current GM's to come to Minnesota, and none of the re-treads interest me in the least, which is why Kim Ng could be the perfect hire for this team.

Out with the old, in with the new. Go Twins!

I'm not against that but I'm not sure she'd be the best candidate.  I think the GM duty in MN would be seen as very attractive so a lot of people will want it.  She was the asst GM for the Dodgers but the Dodgers did a lot of spending.  I would assume the Twins will still be a farm-based team and want a GM with a bit more experience in player/farm development.  Not sure if Ng is that person.  (Also, not sure if she isn't).

I think the Dodgers bought a lot of international talent, and spent a lot....but the last few years? All about the farm, isn't it?

Ng left the Dodgers in 2011.  She's been working for mlb since then.

I don't believe Kim Ng would be foolish enough to leave her Senior Vice-President for Baseball Operations with Major League Baseball gig for a shot at the GM position for the lowly MN Twins. 

 

Need one of those young people with all their hopes, dreams and aspirations just waiting to be crushed

I don't know if Kim Ng is the right person, but now here comes the fun part where we can realistically try to identify the next GM of this team! 

I'd like to find a person who's in an organization that's dealt with budget constraints, has a different philosophy on development/scouting, and in a relatively successful organization.

I'd probably try to target people from the Cardinals, Pirates, Royals, Rays, Indians, Athletics...

Her name was brought up in a Keith Law podcast several years ago. If I recall correctly, he said that she was mostly focused on business development, contract negotiations, etc; and that hiring her for a GM spot would probably require a competent assistant to lead the player development, scouting, etc portions of the job. With that limited (and perhaps outdated) knowledge, I would have no problem with hiring her provided I was confident with her team of assistants.

I'm not sold on Cherington.  He inherited a lot of good players and also made a lot of bad moves.  This article highlights a lot of his bad moves.

Interesting idea.  He's the only major hold over from the Jim Hendry era.  The problem is, I don't think anyone is going to be leaving the Cubs front office until after they win a world series or start losing again.

Billy Eppler, Jason McLeod, Ray Montgomery should also be in the conversation.   

For me the key is not who, but what culture does he/she bring with them.  They need to come from a culture of winning and all the 3 mentioned do.

I'm guessing Antony is a placeholder, but since the trade deadline is just around the corner, we should have a good idea what his marching orders are by then. I have a feeling we are in for a salary dump. If then the Pohlads don't open up the checkbook this off-season, I could see a fan backlash. Are they looking to put money in, or are they looking to take money out? Sano, Buxton, and Kepler......we were so close.

Jason Mcleod - senior VP of player development with the Cubs.

 

Obviously understands the player development side of things. Has been involved with the Red Sox and now the Cubs. Is likely 3rd in the chain of command in Chicago behind Epstein and Hoyer so he might like a little more authority. Chicago's player development has been awesome lately. Hopefully guys like him are candidates and we aren't looking at someone like Dave Stewart.

Yeah, I think we're going to see much lower payrolls again and we'll see guys like Sano leave in FA in a few years instead of sticking around.  You can make a lot of money with a pretty ****ty team.  Marlins, Astros ...

While I certainly plan on ripping/praising the new hire, I don't really know enough about anyone to know if they are the right person for the job.  All five of those people sound good to me.

Top of my list Dan Kantrovitz, Assistant GM of the A's.  He's only 37 and has spent the last 14 years split between the A's and the Cards (doing 2 stints with each).  He was director of Scouting for the Cards; in charge of oversight of statistical analysis for evaluating and targeting players in the draft, free agency and trades; and extensive international operations experience for the A's.  He also has a Masters in Statistics from Harvard.  Billy Beane's sidekick, but with extra experience in the Card's front office, so he knows how to win.
