Dean Optioned-Milone Recalled

I know the transaction was mentioned in the Arcia thread, but perhaps it deserves it's own conversation. The Twins have already used the 40-man roster slot they created with the Arcia DFA to recall Tommy Milone. I have been a Milone backer for a while and do approve of this move. If the sole reason for the Arcia DFA was to add Milone, well I'm not a fan of that. Dean had a couple of pretty good starts, but in the end he is Andrew Albers, someone who has to be super-sharp to get batters out. Milone is probably another guy just like that, but he's had quite a bit of success in the majors.

Two things about Milone:   I predicted he would come back to Minnesota and be in the rotation. I didn't think it would be this soon. Secondly, I still think that despite the $6M contract, he has value. When he was DFAed, clubs were not certain of what they had on their own rosters and they also didn't know whether they would be buyers of others talent. Now teams know a lot more about themselves and a lot of pitchers have gotten injured. I expect that with moderate success between now and July 31, that there will be a market for Tommy Milone.

Milone deserves this spot.  At AAA he has a 1.66 ERA and 0.92 WHIP.  In 44 innings he has only 41 K's but also has only walked 4 batters.  Unfortunately, he will probably never be more than a #4 or #5 starter for anyone. Big difference from AAA to MLB.  But that is what the Twins have right now.  A lot of #4 and #5 starters.

Our vaunted farm system could not produce an outfielder a catcher or pitching. The atmosphere in the dugout is just listless during the games from the shots on TV they show. This regime reminds me of the white house insulation that our presidents are wrapped with. Surrounded by people that are career a.. kissers that won't rock the boat.

So on and on it goes. My rant for today, sorry.

*yawn*

Switching one soft tossing lefty with the other.

Can't wait until this organization gives us something to be excited about again.

Dean, like Berrios, Duffey and Meyer came up with a decent MiLB record and began to overthrow every pitch.  Twins may need to look elsewhere for help.

The best hope here is Milone pitching well and gaining some trade value. Otherwise, the only thing this does is help save the bullpen, but it does nothing to build for 2017 and beyond.

Why not Wheeler? Berrios again after he's been pitching better lately?

I would have got behind wheeler. I think his chance is coming. Milone pitching well is the best anyone can hope for. I mean, he's about a lock for a rotation spot next year.

Milone gaining trade value seems unlikely to me, considering that the Twins have removed him from the 40-man twice now, and both times no team wanted him, even for nothing.

I think our best hope is if Milone trips off the mound and badly sprains his ankle.

He is the absolute epitome of a AAAA pitcher - he "dominates" AAA hitters and then sandwiches one decent start between absolute in-game BP sessions for the other team.

So they basically traded Arcia for Molly's do-nothing BFF utility man and a career journeyman ... whose brothers from other mothers - are spattered across the 40-man (Dean, Rogers) and at other levels in the minors (Albers, Darnell). It's like a clown car filled with junkballing lefties just drives between Minneapolis and the top four affiliates picking up and dropping off pitchers who have no business in a big league rotation.

And good ole' TR is behind the wheel.

Ouch. Ouch.

Milone was optioned last year, not DFAed

so if you have a lot of 4 & 5 starters why would you resign Milone for 2017 in excess of $6 mil? If you aren't going to resign him, wouldn't you rather give that rotation spot to guy with a shot at the '17 season? It's not like your getting a prospect in trade for Milone. You already have Grossman and Santana for 4th outfielder, what more do you think he'd worth? I don't get it

Almost like these guys could use some of that, what do you call it?  Coaching?

Yes - if Hitinapinch is correct, they need to trust their stuff.

Perhaps they also need a little trust from their coaches. Had Duffey gotten the usual bums rush after his start in Toronto last year we wouldn't care about him at this point.

They need to promote those they believe in, and give them an honest chance to figure it out. One bad start and you are out is a horrible way to build the confidence of your rookie pitchers.

This is almost exactly what I think, although I'd rephrase it to say they need to do what's best for those they believe in. If it's best for a particular player to stay in the minors then that's what should be done. Find placeholders for the major league roster if need be because the W-L record is essentially meaningless at this point.

Milone only makes 4.5 million.

I did not know that a soft tosser could overthrow

Milone has had a decent amount of success at the major league level, he deserves another shot, especially on this disaster of a rotation. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up our de facto "ace" the rest of the way. Of course then they wouldn't trade him, and likely would sign him to a 2 year extension.

Clearly they won't bring Berrios up again anytime soon.
