Tunnel Snakes Rule

2:24 Is there real concern for Jose Berrios? Or is this just a case of still learning to pitch to MLB hitters?

Eric A Longenhagen
2:24 I'd wait to see where the velo is next spring before panicking but I know I'm getting there.

I don't get that one. What does his velocity have to do with anything? I didn't think that was a concern.

from the prospect chat today:

Jack C.
2:14 Thoughts on Twins' Luiz Arraez? .344/.383/.450 in 95 games with the Kernels this year. Still only 19 years old. Someone to keep an eye on?

Eric A Longenhagen
2:15 Definitely worth monitoring. Bat-first 2B type. Body offers little projection and the swing isn't geared for much power but he has bat speed, could be plus hit.

The comment about Berrios' velocity is a little strange. It seems pretty clear his problem is control and command (hopefully somewhat the result of nerves), not velocity or movement.  So I'm not sure why velocity next spring would be an important test.

I literally had the exact same thought, but you beat me by a second.

I don't get the disdain, it is a short cut answer in a chat, where they are trying to answer as many questions as possible. I'll take the odds the writer is "more plugged in" than anyone here besides Goin....

I don't doubt that he is more plugged in than us. I just think it's funny when plugged in people make up these silly terms. Every plugged in person in every sport does it.

In the MLB maybe that will be the new thing, a 2nd OF, 3rd OF, etc.

The NBA you have your "Stretch 4" or "Stretch 5"

NFL you have "Catch Radius" and other silly terms that will come back to me when I start watching football again.

Catch Radius is actually useful....the others? meh, not so much.

And, here is the follow up:

mike sixel
2:39 follow up on Berrios: why concern over velocity? Isn't command and movement the issue so far?

Eric A Longenhagen
2:39 Yes but he was able to get away with that more often when he was touching 97. I think it's more likely he does that again rather than suddenly learn how to create movement AND command everything.

I was a bit surprised by that answer also...

I asked a follow up, but not likely it is answered.

I'd chalk it up to something people seem to forget about scouts - they have to know a little bit about so many players that they tend to do things an inch deep and a mile wide.  That question was for someone an inch wide and a mile deep.

That's interesting. I always thought Berrios sat 92-96 in the minors, and it seems like that was where he has been at when I've watched. He's averaging 93.5 MPH with the fastball this year in the majors.

Yeah, I feel like Longenhagen's answers on Berrios still make no sense.

"Third outfielder"

lol at some of these terms being thrown out these days.

I'm fine with him being a third outfielder.

Assuming he's talking about Yogi Berra on the '61 Yankees or young Manny Rameriz playing third fiddle to Albert Belle and Kenny Lofton in the mid 90's.

General observation: it seems that when FanGraphs or KLaw or someone like that says something complimentary, such as that a prospect is highly rated or that the farm system is strong, it is taken as validation of current actions and confirmation of a bright future. However, when they something negative about a player or the front office, the comments are scoffed at as biased, lacking thought or virtual trolling. It seems they should be just as smart when they are negative as when they are positive.

Maybe that's somewhat true as a general matter (we are human after all), but for instance, the positive comments about Gonsalves were not logically incoherent, whereas the comments Longenhagen made about Berrios were illogical. I actually agree with Longenhagen that there is reason to be concerned about Berrios. But his diagnosis/test for determining whether Berrios' problems would continue made no sense even on their own terms.

Right now, there are four players who, if they won AL MVP, would have a great argument to get the award.

Trout, Donaldson, ALTUVE, Betts.

Might even stretch it to five.  Machado.

For me, it's the most intriguing AL MVP race in a very long time.

I really like this naming schema.

Now playing at first second base, second shortstop, and fourth designated hitter, Brian Dooooooooooozier.

It's just like an orchestra.

Get ready for the scorching hot takes on Trout winning MVP soon...

"Does he deserve MVP when his team is in last place?"

My money is on Altuve. Dude is just crushing baseballs this season.

This year, Trout isn't the clear MVP choice like he has been in the past.

No one is ever quite as smart as they are when they agree with you....

Disdain isn't the right word. Just why use such a term? Ranking outfielders by stats doesn't make sense. RF, LF, and CF are different positions. It feels like a term that's isolated to a database instead of on the field. That has some value...but it's definitely abstract.

From today;

mike sixel  12:58 Is Mauer already a HoF player, or does he need more something?

august fagerstrom  12:58 Not a HoFer, the something he needs is for injuries/concussions to have not derailed his career at 30
:(

Eh, I don't buy it.

Stats be damned, Mauer did something no AL catcher in history has done... And he did it three times.

That in itself gets him strong consideration for the Hall.

Mauer has right around 50 career WAR and anyone at that mark should receive consideration. Given the rest of Mauer's trophies, he should get in.

His JAWS ranking is 9th all time for catchers. His numbers are basically in line with the average of the 14 catchers in the HOF.

He has only accumulated 6 WAR since he permanently moved away from catcher so I am thinking he gets compared to other catchers with the potential of a little leeway for injuries, similar to Kirby Puckett.
