Matt: Eno! I’m going to keep asking this question until someone answers it! What are your thoughts on Max Kepler? Is this power for real? I remember hearing about him, but nothing outstanding.

12:12
Eno Sarris: I think he’ll regress to a .175 type ISO but also cover the plate, hit line drives, and have a good OBP.

Jack: Pick one rookie for the ROS? Naquin (w/ the bloated BABIP), or Kepler (whose power compares to Alonso)?

12:12
Eno Sarris: Kepler.

And, Lamonte Wade makes the fringe five this week:

I think Wade will play in the majors some day.

I don't watch much minor league ball. When I do watch, I like to see a compact, balanced swing. Wade has it. He's a long way from the majors but I wouldn't count him out. He could be a good one.

I'm surprised this hasn't been posted. Dozier is saying smart things in this short interview:

I appreciate any player who acknowledges advanced metrics and embraces them, even if we get frustrated with the daily results.

yeah, makes it sound like he cares about his craft a lot, and isn't just some pull happy guy. No doubt, he can pull an inside pitch and deposit it 400 feet away down the line, but I really like his thoughts on his approach to a plate appearance.

It's hard not to appreciate more about him after reading his thoughts on his approach. He's not wrong about anything he says other than maybe prime age.

A bonus from the chat:

Matt
12:49 Can you think of a legitimate reason why Aaron Hicks is still playing baseball in NY?

Dan Szymborski
12:49 They keep paying him, so he figures he might as well keep showing up

I'm genuinely surprised that there are 2 that are worse. Then again, of course, I don't follow the other teams as close.

Ventura was behind him, not a big surprise. He seems pretty similar to Molitor in the former player with no experience sense, but with a longer track record of sucking. Gibbons was ranked 30th which was a surprise. I don't watch a bunch of Blue Jays games, and was certainly not impressed with his playoff performance, but that seems a tad harsh

On Kepler today:

Bill   1:10 I thought the two pieces on Kepler were interesting last week. Could Kepler's pitch recognition ability account for any of his unexpected power, or does the batted ball/expected power profile (both articles from last week on Kepler) mean that despite advanced pitch recognition he is still not making the type of contact that would lead you to expect more than 15 or so homers in a season. Where do you see his power/average falling

august fagerstrom   1:11 I could see elite pitch recognition as something that leads to a player outperforming what scouts perceived to be his true raw/game power because it would lead to more consistently barreling the ball
Writing about Kepler reminded me a lot of Kyle Seager

they rank 13th in the AL in shifting, but I'm sure that's just a fad.....

I honestly don't know what to think about all the shifting, and if it really says anything about the manager. I have to think that the decision to shift or not - at least at some level - has to come from above and relies on data from the analytics team. And the Twins were #6 in the AL last season under Molitor. They aren't shifting as much this year, but that isn't unique to the Twins. The Cubs and Royals both have gone from middle-of-the-pack in total shifts to rarely shifting. The Cubs are last by a significant margin - the Astros are going to put on a shift ~1000 more times than Cubs this year. IIRC, there have been a few articles (I think from BP) investigating why the shift isn't causing a big change overall (ex. BABIP is up overall).

Anyway, there are probably a dozen things I could complain about with Molitor before I would get to his usage of the shift.

I was just quoting from the article......and yes, shifting % is not my number 1 issue with him.

Based off what? I think this is pretty lazy all things considered.

I would imagine it was meant as hyperbole.

I don't think it's unfair, based on results the last 6 years, and the fact that one of the most loyal organizations in the history of professional sports fired it's long time GM, to say that the Twins front office has been a failure.

But it's thrown around casually and recklessly with no facts to back it up. Ignoring how many players we have listed in top 100 lists and where are system has been ranked the last few years. Our success in the minor leagues. His own site has written multiple articles on Max Kepler this past week alone. I'm not saying everything is perfect and we deserve org of the year. I think if you dig around you would be surprised at some of the things we are doing and have accomplished.

Astros got some outs last night using shifts. On one, Kepler, I think, smacked a textbook liner back up the middle, the kind Little League coaches go crazy for. . . right into Correa's glove, after he barely had to move.

I kind of feel like you get to have articles called "Ryan Buchter on Spin Rate and its Limitations" *or* pull Scottie Shofar's Sports Shouting-style hot takes, not both. Unless Sr. Fagerstrom is just teasing a forthcoming article with the results of his musing. Which, in true fangraphs form, could only be called "How the Twins Could Have Ever Developed a Quality Major Leaguer."

To be clear: his take is boring and so are fangraphs' long article titles.
