Badsmerf Verified Member Posted August 5, 2015 Author Posted August 5, 2015 135 ops+ vs 93 ops+ I'm just kidding.... mostly.
Danchat Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 I'm waiting for Colabello's batting average to fall down to Earth like it did in 2014. But so far, the Blue Jays look pretty smart.

DocBauer Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 So the wonderboy, amazing and fun feel good story of a couple years ago that came crashing down to earth....and the player involved that half the bloggers wanted run out of town because he couldn't play defense and never could "really" hit anyway...this is the guy...the guy.....man....can't even finish.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 We should have given Colabello $184 million in 2010!
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 Colabello is having a nice season for the Jays and good for him, but... He has a .392 BABIP for the season. Yes, his BABIP is almost .400. Can't sign a guy with the expectation he'll be the luckiest bastard in the clubhouse. Enjoy his production while it's happening but sooner or later, it's going to come crashing back to earth.
jorgenswest Verified Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 Mauer is a replacement level 1B. The money is gone. At some point, the Twins need to let him go so they have a better chance of winning. I am not even sure they can keep him on the bench. In the era of 13 man pitching staffs, the bench is limited to a catcher, middle infielder and 4th OF that can play CF. No space for a pinch hitter when the staff has to go to 13.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 I just looked at his FG page and Colabello has a -14 DRS in 330 innings. That's... amazing. He's worth -1 run defensively every 23.5 innings he's on the field. Extrapolate that out to 150 games of play and he's a -57 DRS player. http://media.giphy.com/media/mLGnUCverTQ52/giphy.gif

TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 Man, in a year or so when Kepler is knocking on the door this Mauer stuff is going to get out of control. And probably deservedly so.
Rosterman Verified Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 A first base man who hits like Doug Mientkiewicz, who the Twins thought wasn't producing enough. A guy who can't catch, the position that he was best suited for, but he can't catch. Not the third baseman we need. Not the outfielder that could be. Not the best choice for designated hitter. Maybe he needs to shave that beard. That's it. The beard is slowing down his swing!

If the Twins don't trade Plouffe this offseason.... this time next year it will be very difficult to be Joe Mauer.

This sounds like knocking already: .330 / .412 / .540 / .952 (82 games at Chattanooga) (Edit - couldn't get the full stat line to post right)

I don't know any bloggers who wanted him run out of town. For me, I thought it was a big mistake to DFA him. He just makes sense in Toronto. I think the injury was a huge factor in his struggles after April 22nd.
Linus Verified Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 And we would play him where and at the expense of who's playing time? I think it has been well established that we have enough DH types
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 And we would play him where and at the expense of who's playing time? I think it has been well established that we have enough DH typesHe would be a very good bench bat. Maybe have him split time with Hunter in RF? Either way, I'm not worried or upset in the least that they let him go. Let's not make this out to be David Ortiz part 2 or something.
Minniman Verified Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 Don't feel bad, over in the Wild Extra we will be having this conversation for two players who are currently three years into 13 year contracts. The Wild should have learned from the Twins.
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 Parise's contract is nothing like Mauer's. You're comparing apples and oranges.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 Maybe he needs to shave that beard. That's it. The beard is slowing down his swing!Still waiting for our local media to ask the tough questions about Mauer's beard. It was first reported that he grew it for April warmth, then the Wild playoff run. If he has any kind of baseball superstition, the beard should be long gone, and the sideburns should be back. Also, if Mauer's two young daughters are anything like mine, they will regularly order him to shave.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 For me, I thought it was a big mistake to DFA him. He just makes sense in Toronto. I think the injury was a huge factor in his struggles after April 22nd. If the Twins weren't fully committed to Arcia and Vargas (and their 2015 handling suggests they were not), they could have done worse than keeping Colabello around. Could have kept him instead of one of those relievers that we refuse to call up. That said, I don't think his injury was that huge of a factor in 2014, and his 2015 success could probably have only been achieved in Toronto. (I am starting to think *I* could manage an above-average OPS+ there somehow. )
Minniman Verified Member Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 Parise's contract is nothing like Mauer's. You're comparing apples and oranges. 13 years and $98,000,000 each for Parise and Suter in a league with a salary cap is nothing like the 8 year and $184,000,000 contract for Mauer in a league with no cap and 2.5 times the revenue per club? You are right, those Suter and Parise contracts are worse.

You are right, those Suter and Parise contracts are worse. For one, NHL players tend to last longer than major league catchers. For another, Mauer's base salary doesn't fluctuate, it's just massive until it's over. The last three years of Parise's deal are all but free. You should also take a good long look at how Parise's salary compares to Mauer's as a percentage of payroll. Hint: It ain't close.

You should also take a good long look at how Parise's salary compares to Mauer's as a percentage of payroll. Hint: It ain't close. The Parise and Suter deals are both basically ten year deals. The last three spread out the salary cap hit. Both of them will receive $9 million for the next five seasons. Mauer does have a bigger hit, but there is no cap, and he is one player. The NHL has a hard cap. The Twins salaries are pretty cheap right now, so Mauer's looks worse than it should with the average payroll around $100 million in MLB. That does not mean the Mauer contract is not a pit of darkness; I stated it was the day it was signed. It just means the Wild did not learn from that, and the team will be hitting the wall next season when the team will need to sign its restricted and unrestricted free agents. The Wild are less than $2 million from the cap. The Twins are $25 million from the league median payroll.

If you're going to run away from a price-tag every time it gets high, you're going to run away from elite talent. Also, let's not pretend that the Twins don't have their own cap.
