Twins release Schafer

Opens up another 40-man roster spot. Now if they could 60-day Nolaso, by chance. Wonder what the reasoning is behind keeping Bernier on the 40-man, too.

No offense to Schafer, but he is a puzzle piece in a different box than the box the Twins are dealing with. It's a no a fit, probably never was. He probably played his best baseball with the Twins in the last 2 months of last season, but it was an anomaly.

Maybe Schafer can sign on with a Korean club and hit 15 HR's and hit .260. Make the best out of it.

There is no reason to remove Bernier at this time, since there is not a need for his spot yet and they do not have a player to replace him with yet. He would also be exposed to waivers if he is DFA'd and since it would be his second DFA, it would also allow him to become a free agent. Bernier's value on the roster is as a major league ready backup player. It is his job to fill a 25 man spot if the prospects (Polanco & Santana) are not ready for the big leagues.

Schafer's place on the team has become expendable since Buxton, Rosario and Hicks have all now been deemed worthy of major league playing time.

I don't know. I think it's strange. He was on the DL still. So, maybe they removed him and released him. But, I'm not surprised they went with Shane Robinson. He's really good defensively, an ideal 4th OF.

Who?

(was inevitable since he was not in that 1st rounder shot the other day...)

He wasn't a "Twins" first round pick. No need for him to be in the picture of Twins first round picks. That, and the fact that he was a 3rd round pick.

I see the move as a way to open a spot for an upcoming trade.

Maybe.  Keep in mind they need a spot on the 40 man for Santana when his suspension ends.

I just posted this question on a different thread regarding the outfield.  Has anyone heard anything about why Shafer was released now?  Releasing him was an obvious move, but why today as compared to any other day? Is there a trade brewing, is someone being recalled from the minors it's not on the 40 man roster, or is there another reason the FO would do this?  Please educate me if there would be another reason to do itother than a trade, call up or just convenience.

I think it was because he was healthy enough to take off the DL so an official decision had to be made.

Robinson surely made him expendible. Now it's Shane's turn to start looking over his shoulder. Hicks would make a nice 4th outfielder.

I honestly don't know what I'd do with Hicks at this point.  When (if Ryan and Molitor follow their original plan) they move Buxton back to the minors, I think I'd play Hicks every day to see if he improves.  History says he won't, but I'd still give him that last chance.

For sure - I'm all for keeping Hicks around.

Buxton has a week and a half to secure center field.  He hasn't hit close to enough yet, but he is a bit streaky.  To be honest, he looks a lot like what I saw this spring.

Buxton= Melvin Upton Jr lite............................Just kidding, or at least i hope so lol...........but he seems to have the exact same build, kind of looks like him when he runs........I am hoping for an Eric Davis comp for a floor. :)

I have to say, I don't know if it's smarts or luck, but Robinson has surpassed anything I ever expected.

Still, if he actually makes it to the end of the season, I don't see a spot for him going forward.

Until he can show that he can recognize/hit a breaking ball at the MLB level, he is going to get a steady diet of them.

If he became Eric Davis I'd be thrilled. 10 gold gloves and a career .841 OPS.  I'd take that any day of the week and twice on sunday.

There have been some BAD swing and misses in his short time so far.  Yikes.  Young man has to learn sooner or later though.  It's great so far that it really hasn't cost the Twins lately as they've won 3 in a row here.
