Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 Can anyone offer a rational reason for him being on any MLB roster?
SydneyTwinsFan Verified Member Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 *scratches head*Nope, sorry.
GoGonzoJournal Verified Member Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 He was incredibly lucky to have the ERA he did last year, and I think the Twins front office is simply conservative enough to give him a deal. At $2.7 million he's a pretty cheap for a lefty specialist, which is basically what he is. The Twins don't have a lot of vets in the bullpen, either. He also does a lot of community service in Minnesota. I would have non-tendered him.
Winston Smith Verified Member Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 Terry and his sense of loyalty.
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 Inertia? He's left handed, and everyone needs LH relief help? He's probably not quite this bad? Dunno, I'm just spit-balling here.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 ShouldHave traded him for Kershaw, Loney, Billingey and Kemp when we had the chance!!!
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 The serious answer is: he has been a pretty solid player for the twins org for several years now so he gets a bit of a long leash. Unfortunately that leash needs to be let go now, it sucks but hopefully he can catch on somewhere else (or go to the minors and get it together a bit?)
DocBauer Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 Left handed.....breathing.....some velocity and actual ML success. Seriously. Additionally, he's a legit good guy and I think the Twins honestly saw a rebound year coming.
SwainZag Community Moderator Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 My guesses would be.....he's a 7 year vet, they are paying him a decent salary, he was injured and has pitched in very situational times lately to the tune of 11 innings all year. My guess is Stauffer is off this roster before Duensing is.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 Probably because Aaron Thompson is doing his damnedest in June to make Duensing look like the second best lefty in the pen. He's still failing.
Dance with Disco Dan Provisional Member Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 He's the latest player to possess Punto's file of incriminating photos? Butera must have left them behind in his locker after the trade.
drjim Provisional Member Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 Left handed.....breathing.....some velocity and actual ML success.Seriously.Additionally, he's a legit good guy and I think the Twins honestly saw a rebound year coming. I'll second this. Duensing is exactly the type of guy that will keep getting chances in this league for many years to come. This might be his peak salary though.
drjim Provisional Member Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 Can anyone offer a rational reason for him being on any MLB roster? I'm a little disappointed we didn't get a mind boggled in here.
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 Well, there's........uhhh, he can......hmmm,....because.....yeah, that's it, because.
curt1965 Verified Member Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 The best answer is; the don't have anyone (LH) better!
FattCrapps Verified Member Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 The best answer is; the don't have anyone (LH) better!I hear this Jay guy is pretty good. Bring him up.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2015 Author Posted June 10, 2015 If your stats are this bad as a situational guy, wouldn't it be better to just use a righty? He is a good guy, but that's no reason to keep him on the roster. I am disappointed in the FO for him and Stauffer being on the roster.
Minniman Verified Member Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 I think he has a sore arm and needs some AAA rehab to get his pitching back in order. Stauffer does too. They both need some innings.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 His mustache growing ability?
Willihammer Provisional Member Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 He won last Christmas's ugly sweater competition and everyone would rather not pay up for his prize?
James Verified Member Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 Dunno, I'm just spit-balling here. You know that pitch is illegal now, right? But, seriously, you can't have 13 pitchers on your roster without some bodies. Duensing fills that requirement. And he's a lefty. Other than that... I have nothing.
jctwins Verified Member Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 My theory: Molitor was the other guy in the pictures of Gardy that Punto had. Punto gave said pictures to Duensing.
HitInAPinch Verified Member Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 IDK, maybe because in 2013-14 he put in a couple pretty good years when there wasn't much else around in the bullpen? :whacky028: :whacky028:
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2015 Author Posted June 10, 2015 I don't recall him being good in 2014. He had the 12th worst WAR of any RP who pitched 50 or more innings, out of over 130......
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Another example tonight of being way overdue to cut the cord on Duensing.
NorthwestTwinsFan Provisional Member Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Yeah, he's terrible. It's time to make a change.
DuluthFan Verified Member Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 The reason he was probably resigned was he was a veteran left handed pitcher who would be a free agent at the end of the season. If the Twins had fallen out of contention by the trading deadline and he was pitching well, he would have been an ideal trade candidate for a playoff team looking for some veteran left handed help. He is/was a trade asset. Now granted, he hasn't pitched well this year, and the Twins are playing better than expected, but he may still have some trade value if he can turn around his season. I think what may be needed is a 'planned' DL stint for some time off and a rehab stint to get back on track. What may eventually happen is when Santana returns, Milone is moved to the bullpen to take Duensings' place if he hasn't shown some improvement.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2015 Author Posted June 13, 2015 Come on Terry, show some respect to the fans and move on. Does Ryan actually think this guy can pitch?
SwainZag Community Moderator Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Duensing......sigh. He came on with 2 on and 1 out, induced a ground ball, had an intentional walk and got a fly ball that should have ended the inning. Thompson and Pressley set that up last night.
