Nolasco to have MRI

From Gleeman at NBC Sports:

"Last season Ricky Nolasco pitched horribly for two months before finally admitting to the Twins that he was playing through an injury, so when he had a rough 2015 debut Wednesday afternoon I joked on Twitter that they should save time and simply ask him if he’s hurt again.

Turns out it wasn’t really a joke. Nolasco revealed that he felt pain in his elbow three batters before leaving the loss to Detroit and is now headed back to Minnesota to undergo an MRI exam..."

Lol, Surgery - MRI, What's the big diff?

Also, what has to happen for TR to get May and Meyer into the rotation? Does someone have to die? This is going to be a classic TR move, when Stauffer gets that spot.

This makes total sense.  He just has not been the guy he was prior to last year.

I wish he would have been open about it initially and he would already be throwing in rehab.  On second thought, the Twins prefer the wait a year approach that has never worked.

I'm not totally sure how contract insurance works, but I wonder if those couple crappy innings that Nolasco pitched cost the Twins a bunch of insurance money

I don't believe so.  If he gets surgery then insurance should kick in (if they have insurance on him) for whatever terms they had.  I think for Nathan insurance covered up to half his years salary but I might be misremembering.

Suspension and injuries after 3 innings - even GOD want to see May and Meyer pitch at the big leagues.

I'd like to mean this is Trevor May's call here. Given it's elbow, even if it's just pain, I suspect rest/rehab for some time. This contract though is really starting to look like a disaster. Our own version of the Carl Pavano Yankees contract.

I am reserving excitement for May until the actual call-up, because there is this nagging little voice that keeps saying "You know it's going to be Stauffer"

I want to tell that little voice to shut up....but I can't shake the idea that it might be right.

Nolasco will probably make the next start when the MRI shows nothing.

May is scheduled to start on Saturday. If he makes that start, Wheeler and Hamburger are the next two scheduled starters.

If Nolasco is indeed out, the Twins could bring up May and start him on Saturday pushing back Milone and Pelfrey.

That little voice said Pefrey a week ago.  I wanted to strangle that little voice.

Thank you for planting the Stauffer seed.   60% of our rotation, a few days into the season, Milone, Pelfrey, and Stauffer.

Awesome.

Whoa there!  It may be time to take a step back from that ledge.  The Twins haven't officially announced this yet and you're already blasting TR for not choosing the right pitcher to replace Nolasco?  A bit premature.

If they decide that Stuaffer gets the start, criticize away.  I'll be right there with you.

I figured it's only fair I share that pain.

Good grief.  Well, Trevor May or Alex Meyer?  May wasn't stretched out but Meyer was pretty wild.

May was stretched out almost as much as anyone else.  The reported pitch count of 33 for his last spring start was erroneous, the pitch-by-pitch feature of MLB Gameday was only recording the minimum possible number of pitches based on the result of each PA (3 for strikeout, 4 for walk, and only 1 for a batted ball).

May faced 22 batters in 5 innings that day, as compared to Milone facing 23 in 5 innings the day prior (and I found an article crediting Milone with a pitch count of around 90 that game, even though Gameday only shows 35).

Time for what we've all been waiting for.... Let the Taylor Rogers era begin!!!!!

Because you just can't have enough Jasons, let the "Wheeler Dealer" era begin!

If Nolasco goes on the DL, I suspect someone like Thielbar will get called up, then sent down when the AAA starting pitcher gets called up.

Yes. Nolasco could also be rested even if the test is clean.

Overly uncomplicated, one might say.

I wouldn't put it past TR.  If Nolasco requires an MRI and is out for a significant time he'll probably spot start Stauffer for a bit.  However, given his one DISASTROUS spring training start i have my doubts.

But at this point nothing surprises me anymore.

Here's another hypothetical scenario.  Suppose Nolasco requires TJ and is out for the season.  Given Pelfrey's awful track record and Milone's mediocre stuff what if those two are awful as well?  What do the Twins do then?  Roll with what they have till mid season and see how it goes or call up Meyer, May and possibly Berrios if things go way south early? Wouldn't it be ironic if injuries and poor starts force TR's hand?

I'm going to make a preemptive post here. Mike Pelfrey is going to throw 3 horrible starts and then get an MRI and get DL'd for the rest of the season.

If we don't see Trevor May pitching soon, I'm going to get ticked off. We're already on the 7th starting pitcher of the season, so we should have a few young arms in the rotation.
