Byron Buxton Will Have Season-Ending Surgery

I will never understand the people who treat a player's injury like it's a personal failing. This isn't Shaq getting fat all summer and showing up out of shape and unable to play to his contract. It's an injury, and there's no one more unhappy about it than Buxton. (reminder as well, you cannot force a player to have surgery!)

I hope Buck will come through this and be able to play like he did in the first half. When he's healthy, he's a delight to watch on the field and I'll miss him. It's a tremendous shame that he's had so many injuries and has so rarely been able to let his talent shine because of it.

You can IL him and not play him when he's clearly hurt.

He's averaged 82.5 games/season in his career. Part time player. Not someone to count on.

Doesn't matter how talented he is or how spectacular he is when he's healthy. If he can't stay on the field he's worthless to the team.

He is here for two more years as things stand currently, might as well accept it.

The Twins have so many young outfielders, move Buck to 1B.  Let him play out his contract and retire.  Hopefully he gets to 1,000 hits.

I would imagine that Buxton has known all this for several years AND he has chosen to remain a Twin until he retires.

Joe Mauer is a first ballot hall of famer.  you must be really good at whatever you do to have such high requirements for players.

The first big issue is his rehab. The first 6-8 weeks (depending on severity of injury) of rehab can be critical, and they probably couldn't have waited much longer before the end of an 8-week rehab period came after the beginning of the lockout.

As far as resuming baseball activities, his availability next year would definitely be better if he had surgery two months earlier, but maybe they're expecting dates to slide, making it less important.

Tell us now if you see it differently.  He really should be ready to go next season.  Ramon Laureano had the same surgery in June and there is talk of him being available soon if possible.  Buxton is going to have  five months until when pitchers and catchers start.  He should be ready to go for the season.  How he recovers will be largely up to him although if he doesn't recover well I have a feeling the front office or the Twins medical staff will be blamed (just as it was with Mauer)

It seems like I have missed something, but maybe I'm just not looking in the right place.    Do we know what type of hip surgery he is going to have?  A three to five month recovery isn't extreme, but it's more than a quick scope for sure.  

I wish him a successful surgery and a speedy, full recovery. That's best for Buxton and for the Twins.

THATS how we’re researching this?  Surgery of the hip is like saying pain in the torso or cancer of the insides.  Is there actually real info to be had?

I don't know whether the Twins or Buxton have said anything definitive, but TD published an article just a little while back, authored by someone with medical background, that I feel (maybe unwisely) willing to take as nearly gospel.  Don't be put off by the tongue-in-cheek title, it's not Satire.  Oh, and that article takes a deep-dive into what an impingement is because that is exactly the word used on Buxton's official page at mlb.com - so that at least is not an outsider's guess.

He OBVIOUSLY isn't getting hip replacement surgery.  It is for a hip impingement.  Have you not read anything?
