Spring training is well underway, and the Minnesota Twins have made their first round of cuts. A handful of prospects remain in big league camp, but a bunch more will be on display during the Spring Breakout game next Saturday.

Even as the front office gets busy cutting down the spring training group to an eventual 26-man roster, Major League Baseball is unveiling the Spring Breakout games for the first time this year. In what boils down to a prospect showcase, the Twins will host the Tampa Bay Rays on Sat., Mar. 16. Minnesota unveiled the group who will participate today.

A host of top prospects are included among the group, highlighted by names like Walker Jenkins, Brooks Lee, Charlee Soto, and Brandon Winokur. These games will all be played in conjunction with big-league spring training games, and the vibe should be similar: expect everyone to get into the action.

Guys like Lee and Emmanuel Rodríguez have experienced big-league spring training action in a handful of contests already this year. They are up playing with the likes of Carlos Correa and Byron Buxton, but in the Spring Breakout game, those types will be looked at as leaders by prospects such as Jenkins or Marco Raya.

Minnesota has plenty to get excited about on the farm, and something like seven or eight of their top players could begin the year at Triple-A St. Paul. More than a few should be expected to debut with the Twins this season, and supplementing the big-league roster with top-tier depth is something that fans coming to Target Field can get excited about.

The Spring Breakout game will be available to stream through MLB.tv, and the better news is that blackout restrictions will not apply. The game will also be simulcast on Bally Sports North, with Kris Atteberry and Dan Gladden on the call.

Minnesota already announced their starters for the game as well. Jenkins will be in the outfield with the recently acquired Gabriel González and Rodríguez. Yunior Severino, Tanner Schobel, Lee, and Austin Martin will play on the dirt, with Andrew Cossetti behind the plate. Zebby Matthews and Soto are listed as the starting pitchers, and Kala'i Rosario would then be the designated hitter.

Who are you most looking forward to see take the field for the Twins in the Spring Breakout game? You can find the Rays roster here.

To be honest I hadn't not even heard of Christomo and a couple other of the pitchers. Should be a fun exercise. GL

I am not on twitter anymore, but I saw that the twins player development twitter handle shared video of him the other day. His stuff looks ELECTRIC. Should be fun to follow.

Ted, how does this work? The ‘big league’ game is played first, followed by this game, on the main field? Have a ticket to the game so I guess I’ll find out when I get there.

The ticket for the 1 o'clock game is good for the 4PM Prospects game.  So you are good. I checked before I bought mine

I am a little intrigued by Miguel Rodriguez being included on this roster.  After five seasons in the Twins system it appears that his last two have been specifically as a closer and at age 25 he needs to still prove himself worthy against AA competition.  That is investing a lot of patience in a guy, hopefully his inclusion here is a sign that a payoff to that patience is on the horizon.

Looking forward to see these guys play not only individually but as a team. What's interesting is our catching where the highest level is A+ & low on the catching depth. Those higher in depth are not rated. Still rather watch these lower level catchers play. Though I'd like to see them more qualified at that position,

This is a great idea for baseball to do.  I will try my best to catch the game, However, it is only one game and I sure hope people do not take too much from it.  It is more just a fun way for our top prospects to get to play together and let fans see them who could not normally otherwise. I mostly will look forward to Jenkins and Soto.

Squirrel, My wife and I will be at those 2 games on Saturday also. The prospects game will be at the same field immediately after the  major leaguers play. We can stay in our same seats. I'm in section 113 about the 4th row down from the main entrance level, behind the Twins dugout. Stop by and say hello. I'll have an olive green Second Infantry Division baseball style hat on and sitting with my wife.

I'll have to work during most of the game but the MLB app usually let's you re-watch, hoping that's true in this case.

I LOVE this idea for the prospects and hope they do more of this in the future.

The roster is interesting as it includes AAA to A ball. Speculating other teams will follow suit?

Yes. More. Something like soccer's World Cup. Break the teams up into pools and have a few mini tournaments.
