AZTwin Verified Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 It’s basically Gonzalez for Polanco. They really threw crap against on wall and took fliers here. Quantity over quality.. Must’ve really just wanted to dump the payroll.

Well Gonzalez is the long term value, but Anthony DeSclafani and Justin Topa will play big roles for the club in 2024. This is a good deal, netting a top 100 prospect and major league pitching help (although not elite) for the present. Jocko87, AZTwin, Gaastra1966 and 4 others 6 1

Fine with me and I won’t come to Target field. I’m so tired of Pohlad being stinking cheap. With Julien needing regular playing time and Jorge being on the last year of his deal, it was on only a matter of time until he was dealt. EDIT: The Twins did have a $12m option for 2025 wabene, bighat and Danchat 3
ziggy Verified Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 DeSclafani reminds me of Scott Klingenbeck. Bring your glove to Target Field if you sit in the outfield bleachers. Hopefully with the cash return the Twins have a major announcement soon............
bighat Verified Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 I have no idea why everyone's so mad? A top Seattle prospect, a starting pitcher who can slot into the rotation, a bullpen arm, a project, and some cash for Jorge Polanco? I love Polanco, he's a top 5 all-time favorite Twin for me. But I think with Julien & Brooks Lee both looking solid, you have to make this trade. FilthyMogwai, Danchat, Twins_Fan_in_NJ and 4 others 6 1

ziggy Verified Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 DeScalfini makes 12 million, Polanco makes 10. or 10.5, I forget which. I imagine the cash is the salary difference.

Blyleven2011 Verified Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 From what I heard ,,, Twins got 6 million cash plus 4 players in Polanco trade ... Topa had a strong year with Seattle in 2023 , bullpen arm , desclafini will be the fifth starter and the two prospects must prosper in the minor leagues to make the show some day ... Going to miss Polanco and I wish him well in Seattle ...
stringer bell Verified Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 DeSclafani hasn't been healthy for the last two years. He was very good in 2021. Can he be both healthy and effective in 2024 at 34 years of age? I think there's a greater than zero chance that he can be effective. I looked at his game log and he pitched very well until sometime in May. Injury? Maybe. I would also note that AD (tired of typing that long name!) was much better in the friendly confines of Oracle Park. We fans want to win every trade, meaning only elite major leaguers and top prospects. I don't know who will win this trade, but it will most likely be decided by the health of the major leaguers. I'd have preferred Anthony DeSclafani not be included at all. But I figured there had to be something covering his salary.

Ideally, Descalfani can give them similar production to what they got from Maeda last year and it allows them to shift Varland to a high-level bullpen role - I think he'd do very well in that spot. As for Topa, health is the big thing but he was good for Seattle last season and got better down the stretch. bighat 1

We weren’t going to get more for Polanco or Kepler, as some still want him traded or would have preferred him instead. We have the depth in the infield so moving Polanco made the most sense. I look at it as we got a decent BP arm and a top-100 prospect. We need starters to fill out the rotation and DeSclafani does that and can hopefully eat some innings. If he can’t do that, it won’t hurt to cut him. We have infielders and needed the room. And I am hoping we can find a bit more room in another trade. NotAboutWinning 1

The trade itself I'm not a fan if but if it had actually added salary, I'd have lost my mind.

Prospects and the relievers and freeing up Polanco's (reasonable) salary, okay. But adding DeSclafani all but assures we'll see him in the rotation. That's not a move that a team with playoff aspirations should be making. Hopefully this gets the ball rolling for another move to actually upgrade the rotation. But, I'm skeptical that can be done.

With Julien and Lee, there wasn't going to be much place for him to play. The swapping his money for a 5th type starter though I don't like, would have been a better trade if he didn't come back in the package IMO. My only deal is that it really doesn't do anything to improve the club for next year. Yes, the top prospect is nice, but if we think the Descalini or whatever his name is is going to replace Sonny Gray, then we are still going backwards. Still need a trade for a rotation arm that slots above Joe Ryan. #2-3 type guy.

Think Lee or Lewis. I’m fine using Lee for a big return like that. Are you? Because it will take someone like that, and then some. I do think this trade is a precursor. Will have to wait and see. If nothing else happens, then I will be right with you and not like it. But Polanco has had issues of late keeping healthy. I will miss his bat in the lineup, so hopefully there is payroll room now to do that. But Polo’s defense just was okay. I’m hopeful Julien can improve. If we haven’t traded Lee for pitching, he can come in, too.

The cost of a frontline SP is where my skepticism is and where it has been all offseason. I've seen a lot of names thrown around, and I've always said, "Are you okay with what trading what it would cost to get them?" Personally, I would have rather ween Woo or Miller in this trade than AD and all the rest.
