We gave up Steer, CES, and Hajjar for him, and got what...5 starts and 25 innings out of him?

They must be printing money down there.

I am surprised they guaranteed that much money.  I would have made it with easy to reach incentives like 100-120 innings then gone up for that last 5.  Maybe 12 million guarantee with 1 million bonus at 80 innings and 2 million per 10 innings that second season to reach the 22 million total.  Just so you don’t lose all that money when he blows out his shoulder or has bilateral leg weakness or something even weirder.

It was actually 9 starts and 42 innings if you count the 4 starts he had in 2022 after the trade. Still, it's looking pretty likely that it will go to go down as one of the worst trades in twins history.

Mahle trade will battle with the Sam Dyson trade for worst trade values in how things worked out.  Let's see, both pitchers get injured soon after joining team.  We got 12 games, 11 innings and a 7.15 era from Dyson and 9 starts split over 2 years from Mahle.    Factoring in we traded Steer and Encarnacion-Strand for Mahle I think Mahle wins as the worst trade.

I stand corrected. In my defense, I must have been blinded by his brilliance and completely zoned out on the rest of his starts.

Yah, Mahle trade is right up there with the worst trades ever.  The Twins were desperate and took a real leap; hurts. Glad he is gone elsewhere. Good riddance and good luck to him.

Good riddance isn't exactly the correct term here.

We'll all feel better about this as first CES then Steer prove to be 4A players. It was worth the shot. No idea why we would be mad at Mahle though.

It is kinda funny watching the Reds chase pitching this offseason after they sold it all off.

Wrong term, yes.

I wasn't a fan of his pitching style, but wish him luck. I was thinking that it was good that he signed with another team and not sure how that wound up - stupid two words. Sorry.

I don't condemn Mahle. I don't know if I condemn the front office. I do know that the Twins came out severely on the short end of the trade with the Reds. It is unfortunate that injury rendered Mahle pretty much useless in helping the Twins win in 2022 and 2023.

So I haven't been paying attention, but is their compensation for him signing elsewhere?

Yes.  The Twins can't sign him and waste more money.

At the time of the trade, I thought it was a gutsy attempt to improve the team at a very high cost.  Unfortunately, it didn't work out (for the Twins).  You win some and you lose some.

Maybe for this front office but there are much worse trades throughout Twins history. They took a risk and Mahle was injured. If he had been healthy it would have been a fair deal.

I have my doubts that the Rangers will get much out of this contract. I know they fixed his elbow but the shoulder is still a potential problem. They're paying him like he's a cinch to be healthy.

Not one of their brightest moves.

$22M for a player recovering from TJ with an additional $5M in incentives?

Pitching is ridiculously expensive this year.

Its nuts.

As I listen to the guys on MLB radio talk about the Reds, they think CES is an elite bat and Steer has been quite good.  This was not worth a shot IMO and I said so at the time.  Mahle is not a difference maker and the 22 Twins were not a team to invest in as heavily as they did at the deadline.  Gibson-Long also looked good in his debut.   Obviously, a different trade but the decision to go for it with a team that was not even close to a contender might be the worst decision this front office ever made.  Yes, fans are going to support pushing in chips but it's impossible to deny we would be in much better shape if we had CES, Steer, and SGL right now.  SGL would be great depth.  CES is the starting 1B and Steer would be a utility player and starter against LHP in the OF.  Granted, CES started out slow but he got better and better.  His OPS was 966 for his last 100ABs.  I also think Steer and Castro would make an ideal pair of utility players or CES and Steer would be great trade capital for pitching.
