Nice to see the AL East lose (because of course they are the best -- just ask them), but the Orioles are pretty hard to hate at this point. However, that could change! Schmoeman5 and gunnarthor 2
Blyleven2011 Verified Member Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 Texas leading Baltimore 10-5 ... Like mentioned above the east have lost every game so far ... If the east doesn't get into the ALCS or NLCS TV ratings will be zilch and mlb will be crying ...

It's not considered unusual for a bad team to win 6 in a row, and it's not considered unusual for a good team (or division) to lose 6 in a row. Winning the World Series can be accomplished by going 13-9 or 11-8, and just about any team is capable of that, even over a difficult stretch in the schedule. When one thinks about it that way, winning the World Series might be the least meaningful championship of the four major North American team sports. PDX Twin 1

Atlanta and Philly are playing each other, one of them will be in the NLCS, but I agree with you. I'm sure MLB executives weren't very happy that NYY, NYM and/or Boston did not make the post-season. glunn 1

When one thinks about it that way, winning the World Series might be the least meaningful championship of the four major North American team sports. Baseball is unique in the importance of the starting pitchers who happen to be selected for any given game. A favorable starting pitching matchup can make an otherwise decisive underdog into a decisive favorite. In 1987, the Twins got 5 out of 7 World Series starts out of Viola and Blyleven, their two stars. In 1965, the Twins use Grant and Kaat in 6 out of the 7 games. The rest of the starting rotation was largely irrelevant. That means that the balance and depth that is important over 162 games, is much less important over 7 (or 5 or 3). glunn 1

ziggy Verified Member Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 The Texas outfielders are making me appreciate the Twins outfield defense. Looks like Delmon Young, Oswaldo Arcia and Josh Willingham in the outfield at the same time. glunn, Blyleven2011 and RpR 3

I like Kershaw not only for ball but all the. humanitarian work he and his wife both do in off-season. That was Mariano for me. Total class. I'm convinced he could still walk out to the mound, let 50,000 people scream, announce to the world he's going to throw the cutter (since we all know it's coming anyway). And then saw off the bat.
