CoasterProductions Verified Member Posted March 21, 2023 Posted March 21, 2023 I saw a trade proposal on BTV that had the Cardinals sending Lars Nootbaar to the Twins. They have a huge plethora of outfielders who are righties. However there is a bit of an issues as we have Max Kepler in right field. Which leads to the Tigers entering the conversion. They have lefty Tarik Skubal in their rotation and there are no lefties in our rotation. So here it is. Twins receive: OF Tyler O’Neill and LHP Tarik Skubal Cardinals receive: RHP Bailey Ober and RHP Chris Paddack Tigers receive: OF Max Kepler and OF Emmanuel Rodriguez Thoughts?

Tyler O’Neill is a million times better than Max Kepler and Tarik Skubal has really high upside. If you were making this trade what players do you think would be best to get a deal done?
Doctor Gast Verified Member Posted March 21, 2023 Posted March 21, 2023 I'm afraid, I wouldn't. Like Ober & E Rod too much for what we'll be getting
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2023 Posted March 21, 2023 I don't understand how this makes the twins better short or long term.
chpettit19 Community Moderator Posted March 21, 2023 Posted March 21, 2023 Twins: Not outrageous, but I think O'Neill and Skubal are both good, not great, players. If I'm trading Rodriguez in this deal I'd need a great player in return. Cardinals: I don't know that they would be interested in a guy who's cracked 100 innings pitched once in his career and another guy coming off his 2nd tommy john with no plans to pitch in 2023 for O'Neill. Tigers: I think they'd be thrilled with Kepler and Rodriguez in return for Skubal. It's an interesting idea, but I think there'd need to be some tweaks.

There is no metric available to point out O’Niell is a million times better than Kepler. Skubal just had a major surgery.
Dman Verified Member Posted March 21, 2023 Posted March 21, 2023 Not sure why we would be hot to get Tyler O'neill who has more 700 OPS years than the one elite 900 OPS season? Other than he is right handed but Nick Gordon can probably give us a 700 OPS there if that is who O'neill is. Skubal is a good pitcher but giving up 6 years of a potential All Star player for him? That seems pretty risky to me. If the Tigers would do Ober, Paddack and Kepler for Skubal I could maybe see that. I mainly wouldn't want to see Rodriguez in this deal.

Maybe I don't see O'Neil's full potential but I believe you are greatly exaggerating his worth. And Pagan has really high up side, I'd rather keep Ober and wait for E Rod to further mature to provide that pop in the MLB. Although it'd be nice to have O'Neil's RH cOF bat but IMO that & a LHSP isn't a priority.
Trov Verified Member Posted March 21, 2023 Posted March 21, 2023 So you are sending out our number 6 starter, likely to get innings this year and next, for a guy that is left handed but less years of control and most likely similar upside. Maybe Skubal is a little higher than Ober because Ober has not been healthy, but when he has pitched he has been good. Mainly you just want the lefty starter and feel that is worth giving up our number 3 prospect, to get a lefty pitcher that is basically the pitcher you are sending away. Then to make the deal "better" you are swapping basically the same OF, but other side of plate hitter, where the righty is only slightly above average against lefties. Career 110 OPS against lefties. Not sure how O'Neill grades out on defense but at least Kepler has that going for him. Baseball reference has O'Niell a LF a negitive defender, but Kepler a positive defender at RF. Then to top it all off we send away a guy who might be in rotation next year, or could be dealt for something. So to sum it up, we basically swap guys that are similar in control years, Skubal one less year of control, at both OF and Pitcher, and to do this we give up our number 3 prospect and another possible starter for next year. Yeah that is a big no for me dog.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted March 21, 2023 Posted March 21, 2023 If the Cardinals can get two starting pitchers for a flash-in-the-pan outfielder and nothing else, the Twins should be selling flash-in-the-pan outfielders too. I like how the Twins give up 4 players while the Cardinals and Tigers give up one each. Looks like this was proposed by a Cardinals fan to me. I think a case could be made that Rodriguez and Ober are the best two trade pieces in that whole deal, not sure why the Twins need to give up so much.

tony&rodney Verified Member Posted March 21, 2023 Posted March 21, 2023 The Twins are NOT listening on Emmanuel Rodriguez. They are hoping he is Juan Soto.
TopGunn#22 Verified Member Posted March 21, 2023 Posted March 21, 2023 Skubal is a very good pitcher who is likely to miss at least half this season. O'Neill is a decent player but E-Rod is our future. As tony&rodney pointed out our ceiling for him is Juan Soto (even Juan Soto "lite" is a heck of a player). He may only be 1 1/2 to 2 years away. He's simply untouchable at this point.
GKuehl Verified Member Posted March 21, 2023 Posted March 21, 2023 This would be horrendous. O'Neill isn't much better (if at all) than Kepler. So, cancelling out O'Neill and Kepler, we would be giving up 6 years of E-Rod, 5 years of Bailey Ober, and 2 years of Paddack for Skubal. There's also no guarantee Skubal is better than Ober, especially considering Ober's velocity increase.
Rod Carews Birthday Verified Member Posted March 21, 2023 Posted March 21, 2023 Count me out on this trade. The Twins would be giving up the two best players in the trade, four in total, for two players who are marginally better (or better fits) than two of the players given up. Just because the numbers line up on BB Trade Values (which can be an interesting and useful site) doesn't mean that the trade makes any sense. Here's an extreme(ly hilarious) example.

And yet you KNOW there would be some wizard who said the Twins got fleeced cuz Rendon's contract is an albatross.
CoasterProductions Verified Member Posted March 22, 2023 Author Posted March 22, 2023 I should have specified this in the initial post but this was just an idea. I am going to be honest now that I think about it this is a terrible idea. They would be nice players to have on the team but I realize that I may be overpaying for them.
