Gordon injured

Just saw a report on Rotoworld from Do-Hyoung Park, that Gordon has a mild to moderate left high ankle sprain. He was in a boot walking with crutches after the game. Not good news at all.

High ankle sprains tend to linger. He could well be out until Opening Day. Fortunately this team has the depth to handle some injuries without too much loss.

Does he have options left? If not, an indefinite trip to the DL could be advantageous. By the time he is 100%, someone else is likely to be injured.

It was very strange how Gordon sprained his ankle. I get it that they want to experiment with Gordon in the INF this ST, to see if they can get his bat in the line up more often. But from the start IMO it has been a waste of time. From his MiLB days, his INF glove wasn't good enough and now he has shown that his OF glove is very capable. He still has stuff to learn in the OF and that's where he should be this ST. Also I think that he'll get enough RHP ABs in the OF/ DH & they said they wanted him to learn 1B. So they don't need him in the INF, we have enough INFers & soon we'll have an over abundance.

Nevertheless I'm a Gordon fan & I wish him a speedy recovery.

Very bad news. Hope he’s back soon, because Gordon is a) a good young player still with plenty of upside and b) one of the players I tune in to watch.  Oh well, more Gallo, Kepler and Turner for a while -zzzzzzzzz.

Well, we all knew players would start dropping and this isn’t a particularly concerning injury.

Did that about 20 years ago playing with my dog.  Hurts and sucks.  Gave me good excuse for poor golfing so bright side.

Gordon has been playing the infield for 99% of his baseball life, and the vast majority of his baseball career.

He hasn’t really proven himself to be a capable outfielder.  That was an experiment because we literally had nobody else. It started terribly and he eventually got himself to roughly league average over a relatively small sample size.  During that time we saw him dive at and miss a ball, potentially costing them a game, and various other gaffes.  

We also have 4 other gold glove caliber outfielders.

He is not a starting outfielder for this team.

Everyone wants to get Gordon into the lineup often.  I agree he has earned the right to see if he can sustain what he did last year.  This is how it would happen.  Then everyone complains about it and blames management because he made an out of control play at 2B.  What an odd take.

I'm with you on this.  I started to make some kind of allusion to Royce Lewis hurting himself in the outfield last year, but thought better of it because it amounted to satire and I'm best advised to leave that to RandBalls Stu.  But the irony is just too rich and I find myself at least laying the outline of it here.

I think he's playing in the infield because as of now he would be the preferred longer-term fill-in on the infield against right-handed pitching.  In the event of a longer-term infield injury, you have the following options against right-handed pitching: Farmer (650 career OPS against righties), Solano (696)...or Gordon (758, and 793 last year in his first full season). And there's a whole lot more right-handed pitching than left. The org has left-hand OF options, while without Gordon, Polanco is the only left-handed option in the infield (exclude 1B, whoever that is). I realize, the splits for right-handed batters doesn't tend to be huge, and the 650-700 OPS range isn't complete disaster...but for a team that figures to struggle a bit to score runs in the first place, if you have to take Correa or Polanco out of the lineup for an extended time, it could get pretty bleak hoping for Farmer or Solano to spark anything sustainable playing every day and taking a ton of at-bats against right-handed pitching.

This is why I still haven't heard a really good explanation for acquiring BOTH Farmer and Solano. It's not like Solano is considered a defensive wizard-like middle infielder at this point. I guess we'll see what happens.

Gordon played 98 games in OF last year - 33 of them in CF. More than an experiment. Hit .272 with 9 HR & 28 doubles in 405 AB’s………high .700’s OPS v. RH pitching …….needs to play CF v. RH pitching when Buxton can’t play ……40 starts. Should play LF another 80 starts v. RH pitching. Can DH some…..get him 525 AB’s v. RH pitching!!

We have 3 guys behind him on Farm that are SS and one guy that’s a 2B………why are we forcing him into that role?

Gallo - Kepler - Taylor are all gone after ‘23…..why would we not just leave him in OF for our future?

Guys get hurt - not worried about a sprained ankle in Spring Training but do wonder about the logic?
