Deja vu.

 

I think i have been waiting for this parade before, tasked with writing a game thread, not knowing what i would write...

 

But that (or those?) times the Twins weren't leading there division. I could away with substandard game intros. Ha. Jokes on them (you?) I got no standards to hold me down, to pick me up, to make me frown.

 

So this is it. The fire trucks are shining their wheels, all in fine uniforms. Parade might be over by the time the game begins, and i got an opportunity to car pool, so i can post on the game thread... if my phone has charge and signal.

 

They are handing out mucus (he means music...) percussionist asks if there is a triangle part, he says you gotta go ask pythagoras... squares on every side of me!

And you wonder why i am like this?

 

Anyway, i am a student of deja fu, so maybe i'll write a better intro this time? Remember rule 1.

 

Anyway, we go for a sweep with a line up we can get away with. I hope we get away with it.

 

Perez is pitching for us.

 

Lynn is pitching for them.

 

And i leave line ups to a benevolent soul, looking to acquire merit.

 

Discuss them when they appear, and tell bad jokes!

Pregame meal @ Tx Roadhouse near Ft Worth in my Twins jersey (and my wife, from Tx, in a Twins jersey she borrowed from one of my sons.) Seats for the game should be the best I've ever had - row 7 behind RH batter. $20 ea on Stub Hub. I guess not too many want to sit in the 100° heat today.

I'm sure all-right-handed batting orders happen relatively often but I wonder how often a team starts an all-left-handed batting order.

I did a Google search and found this in the internets, posted by someone using a pseudonym:

 

On Saturday, 10 August, 1985, while playing the Philadelphia Phillies in the City of Brotherly Love, the St. Louis Cardinals manager Whitey Herzog used a full 9 man lineup of left-handed batters. This was quite easy for Whitey to do, with 5 of these regulars being switch-hitters that were digging in from the left side. Jack Clark, the big right-handed bat on the squad, had been in the starting lineup the whole year up to this point, but was out of the order that day (his spot in the 4-hole was replaced by the veteran left-handed bat of Darrell Porter), and our pitcher, right-hander Kurt Kepshire, also batted left during his brief career.

The only 4 full-time left-handed hitters in the order were the above mentioned battery of Porter and Kepshire, as well as The Ripper's replacement at first (lefty Mike Jorgensen) and right-fielder Andy van Slyke. The other five men in the lineup that day were the usual Runnin' Redbirds' switch-hitting starters: Vince Coleman, Willie McGee, Tommy Herr, Terry Pendleton and Ozzie Smith. Here was the batting order that day:

1. LF Vince Coleman
2. CF Willie McGee
3. 2B Tommy Herr
4. _C Darrell Porter
5. RF Andy van Slyke
6. 3B Terry Pendleton
7. 1B Mike Jorgensen
8. SS Ozzie Smith
9. SP Kurt Kepshire

What was special about that game? Well, it was the second game of a doubleheader in Philadelphia that day, with the Cardinals winning both games to get to 23 games over .500 that year (65-42 when the day was done), but the second game featured the mirror image of the Cardinal lineup in the first match. What did Whitey's lineup in the first game look like against Philly southpaw Jerry Koosman? That's right, he batted a full 9 from the right side:

1. RF Tito Landrum
2. CF Willie McGee
3. 2B Tommy Herr
4. 1B Jack Clark
5. LF Brian Harper
6. 3B Terry Pendleton
7. SS Ozzie Smith
8. _C Tom Nieto
9. SP Danny Cox

That game featured the same switch-hitters (minus Vince), but also included straight right-handers Tito Landrum, Jack Clark, Brian Harper, Tom Nieto and pitcher Danny Cox.

The Cardinals won the first game against lefty Koosman, 5-4, and the second game against right-hander Kevin Gross, 13-4. I love those switch-hitting teams.

 

 

I thought this was a very interesting nugget.

As far as scoreboard watching goes, I'd like to see Oakland and Tampa lose occasionally. Winning the division is the priority, but having "a chip and a chair" in post-season is better than watching someone else play.

Plus I believe we're only 2.5 games behind Houston, so they're worth watching too. We could catch them and get the 2nd seed (the Yanks are around 7 games ahead at this point).

But most Major League players grew up in tropical or sub-tropical places, either in the Caribbean on in the southern United States. I'd be interested to know whether these players who grew up playing in heat are as much affected as we northerners feel like we would be. Any thoughts?

I would think well-conditioned athletes can function much better than most of us in the heat. But playing in 98F for days on end is going to wear anyone down, especially if it's your home field. My guess is that it's a net negative for the Rangers.
