Need to take a hard look at Sano.

As a Twin Ortiz had a K rate under 20%. Sano’s is nearly double that.

Can the Twins “win” without him being the generational type he was hyped to be? Possibly. But it should be noted that the FO brought in 3 big sluggers this offseason. That may not always be possible. And, if the Twins are spending more on offense it means that they have less to spend on pitching.

Last season he struck out at a 38% clip. This season he's about the same. Hoping to see an improvement.

Despite his struggles, I'm not fan of getting rid of a guy with that much power. Does he need to improve? Of course. But despite his issues, he's a guy you can't give up on. Much like Buxton.

I believe the front office should always give full consideration to anyone being traded.

Yep. They should be willing to trade any player at any time if they feel the return improves the team's situation. And the situation will vary from one year to another. Last year trades were made with future seasons in mind. This year any trades that happen will probably be made with the current season in mind.

In honor of this thread I'd like to propose we also consider the following:

Buxton has been caught stealing three times.  Cut him.

Garver's first name is Mitch.  We shouldn't trust him.

Our second baseman's name clearly rhymes with "poop", what's he hiding with the weird pronunciation?

Mitch does rhyme with snitch. I think you're on to something here.

Precisely?

Why do we have to trade major league talent for major league talent when the overwhelming majority of trade deadline deals involve prospects for Major League Talent?

Sano isn't a free agent until 2022 and he has an option remaining. Is this really a "Hard Decision" that must be made sometimes?

I believe the front office should always give full consideration to anyone being traded. I primarily hope that they consider... current value, potential value, years of control, options remaining and contract obligations and then consider... the current value, potential value, years of control, options remaining and contract obligations of anyone they get back while assessing the timing of any consideration.

Why not trade Polanco for starting pitching and get a special starting pitcher in return?

Hadn't thought of this. Don't care for it.

Neither do I.  :)

This team doesn't need to subtract to add... It simply needs to add.

i guess my take on him is this-he still has at least one option....the way its going with injuries he can go to Rochester if and when everyone is healthy again. I dont think the Twins want to try to sneak Adrianza through wavers and frankly he is more valuable right now than Sano. As long as somebody is dinged up he will be on the big club, but part of a rotation at third that will include Adrianza, Gonzalez, and Astudillo. It has worked so far. We can afford to be patient with him.

This thread baffles me. The guy is OPS'ing .986, and someone wants him sent down because they think Adrianza is more valuable. Nobody can be expected to hit better than that, so I guess there is just nothing he can do that will be good enough.

Mauer was criticized for too much of his OPS being "empty" OBP, why can't we run Sano out of town for filling up his OPS with empty power? It's almost like people don't understand the statistic?

empty power? Is that a joke?

Update: 3 hits for Sano today

And now hitting .260.  I know people have been piling on OP, but we should be wary of jumping to any conclusions when the sample size is so small.  Two days and Sano has improved his BA by 50 points.

The reason people have been piling on is the exact reason you stated. "Be wary of jumping to any conclusions when the sample size is so small".

I'm just going to keep revisiting this thread and updating for people to see that Sano isn't a bust and "should be traded" or "should be demoted". :)

The OP wanted to dump him based on a smaller sample size.

And, I'm not looking for Sano to slap singles through the infield. His batting average is practically meaningless to me. His OPS was something like .865 when OP started this thread.

I also feel like people have some personal issues or something against Sano. The hostility people have towards him here even just after a couple weeks on the big league club is very surprising.

I have liked Sano since the first time I he played. I thought he was doing good 11runs scored and 10 RBIs in 12 games. He seems to have at least one or 2 game changing HRs so far too.

His OPS is 1.036. That's pretty good, right?

Against some pitchers, his uppercut swing just isn't doing it - he's looking like Slo-Mo (Morrison) from last year. The HRs he'll hit will probably make him worth it statistically, but I'm concerned against better pitching he's going to stink at the plate. There's still plenty of time to turn things around, but he looks like the same player as last year.

Rays have pretty good pitching, right?

This reminds me of how empty of a statistic BA can be. This is Ben Revere in 2014:

BA .306, which you might think is pretty good. But of 184 hits only 13 doubles, 7 triples and 2 HR. OBP .325, OPS .686.

This is his year to prove consistency, listening to coaches, and showing that he wants to be more than the next Delmon Young or Oswaldo Arcia.

He's already been better than both. I don't understand this comment at all.

Sanó had a nice weekend in Tampa. Good at-bats, and he was rewarded with hits. Let's see how he does against Cleveland. The Tribe has three good arms going during the weekday series.

A larger point is that almost all hitters go hot and cold (Max Kepler is Exhibit A). Sanó's "bad" at-bats and games make me think that he just won't improve. Two games where he had consistently good at-bats doesn't change my opinion either way.

I think it's honestly because how much potential he showed coming up thru the minor leagues and how much hype he got being such a special player.   People feel slighted that he isn't a mega star or something right now.  It's the same thing with Mauer, when he didn't play at MVP level, the critics were there to try and tear him down.  It's why it's hard to have nice things sometimes.

Sano will come around, he just needs to stay healthy.
