Man, Kiriloff is going to be a tough out.

I'm always a skeptical old curmudgeon when it comes to prospects, but even I'm excited about him. He looks like a hitter.

Agreed, that was an awful lot of plate coverage and bat control on display.

Why does the idea of "the Natural" come to mind?

 

I am an optimist, but I still believe in letting things taking a natural and acceptable course. I am really starting to think Kirilloff will be up before 2019 is done.

Buxton: I had almost forgotten how dynamic he is and how fun he is to watch! My God he has talent! Healthy and hitting .250 with an OB near .300 he's a stud. More than that, approaching his ceiling this year, or next, he is an All Star plus. Makes you remember why some of us talk about patience, no matter how hard that term is to swallow.

At what point do we start taking Buxton’s spring training seriously?

I think you do now, don't you?

 

We are well past the "oh well, it's only the first 2 games" time frame. With only a week plus, unless he just does a nosedive, I think he's poised for a nice season. Hit his ceiling? Meh, probably not. But he could at least touch it.

Are there any studies showing correlation between ST stats and the following regular season?

 

Better to be good than bad, I guess. But I don't think it has any relevance whatsoever on what is to come in the regular season.

Luke Hughes would be a hall of famer if it did.

I remember reading one many years ago on Fangraphs that said the only thing that usually translated (not 100% of the time though, obviously) was K% and BB% for both hitters and pitchers.

I would wait until the quarter point of the season before looking at any statistics.

 

Earlier than that and this spring I would watch each of Buxton’s at bats. If he is attacking strikes and avoiding the breaking balls out of the zone I would be encouraged.

 

There is no way to make any conclusion on Harper’s handful of innings against the opponents reserves. We rely on the skilled eyes of the staff.

But May or June is when I will start to take whatever he does SERIOUSLY. :)

Considering he did quite well the last two springs, I'll echo Ash and say May or June.

Hitting ST fastballs shouldn't change anything we think. Gotta wait until the benders start coming his way.

one of his hits above was on a breaking ball. And he took two for balls in the previous AB.

 

It has always been an inability to square up fastballs in the zone that has been his primary weakness anyway, IMO.

I disagree, I think his problem has been putting himself in a bad position to be aggressive by chasing junk.

 

Either way, I hope whatever his prior flaw was....it's something he's successfully fixed.
