Sano Enters Camp Injured

According to the Reusse article: "Sano has a laceration on his right heel that will be checked fully by the medical staff during Monday's physicals. It's not official, but presumably he was spiked by a teammate as Miguel's Estrellas team celebrated its Dominican playoff championship after a 4-0 victory on Jan, 23."

Sano was probably hurt walking barefooted in a bar.

I'm glad someone has ripped the lid off this massive coverup.

The heel laceration is barely an eyebrow raiser for me, and only then just because it hasn't healed after a month. He probably didn't give it adequate rest, and after last year I'm more than willing to give Sano a pass on working a little too hard. I'm not going to worry until he misses several ST games as a result, or we find out it he cut (I mean lacerated) it Taylor Heinicke-style by roundhouse kicking doors or something.

I get the frustration with Sano and I was hard on the guy early last year, but that energy has been spent and I'm willing to give him some leeway again now that it appears he and the club are both seem all-in on saving his floundering career.

I'm not sure anyone has touched on this yet at TD, but mods should feel free to delete this if I'm wrong.

Following an off-season that Miguel Sano finally seemed healthy and in better shape, he enters camp today with a lower right leg/heel laceration he received while in the Dominican Republic, per Do-Hyoung Park. [twitter]

Sano's inability to stay healthy throughout the past two seasons has blurred this FO's visions for the future. The Twins just cannot afford something like this to happen, especially early in camp where he can easily fall behind. Here's hoping that the cut is relatively small, but heel lacerations and blisters can take awhile to heal and are usually tough to manage without pure rest. It's a very delicate location; the Twins should treat it as such to prevent long-term problems.

What are your thoughts on this news? Could you see the Twins signing a 3rd basemen soon as insurance due to the fact that no one is pushing him in the pipeline?

Put a F-ing band aid on it and get to work.

This kind of stuff is dumb that it is even reported.

After reading all the comments, I am considering ending it all. But I can't decide if I should slit my wrists, cut my wrists, or lacerate my wrists? :)

Incision looks like the easiest option. Amputation would have the highest success rate.

I think you should just suck it up and suffer bloodlessly with the rest of us. (Muting the TV helps control the self-destructive tendencies.)

Today's Strib article on Sano states that he was a DH in the Dominican League, going 10 for 45 (.222).  One HR and 12 SOs.  So, i'm surprised at all of the exuberance over nutrition and weight.  .Let's see some results in the field before we get too giddy!

Yeah and I'm sure he's in the best shape of his life too. How many times have we heard that concerning players after they report in the spring?

It's dumb until he sits out for a week because the skin keeps opening up on the heel

Just read on Twitter Sano isn't taking groundballs today

That's fine, but I just feel like it's pointless to report this. I also feel like there is a chance they aren't being truthful about it either. We have seen many times in the past the Twins report injuries as being minor, then turn out to keep the player out for a much longer period of time than it feels like it should have.

Josh Harrison is still available. Would be good insurance in case any of Sano, Schoop, or Cron (Sano to 1B) struggle.

My guess is the insurance is Ronald Torreyes as utility, he would take over Adrianza's role, who would fill in for Sano. I'm not saying I like the  plan, but that would appear to be it.

According to Twitter, Sano will wear a boot for the next 7-10 days to allow for the cut to heal.

Sounds like it was actually a pretty serious laceration that they're being careful with.

uffda.

A week to a week and a half behind schedule. Not the end of the world, but not a good start to camp.

"There is no structural damage to the bones or ligaments in the foot; the boot is only a precaution to immobilize and protect the area so that the wound remains closed and clean. According to manager Rocco Baldelli, the Twins plan to keep Sano in the boot for 7-10 days, during which Sano will not participate in on-field drills...........

......Baldelli said the injury was sustained around the time of the celebration of the Dominican Winter League playoffs last month, when Sano won the league championship with his team, Estrellas Orientales."

"The injury was sustained around the time of the celebration". Just what does that mean. What is the big secret. Why can't anyone say exactly how it happened, and what happened? Happened during the celebration? While on the field? In the clubhouse? Out drinking later? What? It makes me think that it happened foolishly and they don't want to say.....

Plus, the playoffs ended on Jan 26. Why is this just being dealt with by the team, now? That was 3 weeks ago.

fair questions.

Another incident in the line of Sano follies that make it irresponsible to enter a season counting on him as the primary third baseman.

If only the owners could have given him another guaranteed million this would have never happened.

The reason this has not been publicized any further is because of HIPPA. It's the law that medical information is private, and that's the way it should be. Sano and only Sano can tell the public the details. Otherwise it is none of our business.

This would appear to be on Sano. My assumption (or maybe guess is a better word) is that he underestimated the seriousness of the injury and thought it would heal on its own more quickly than it has.

I think the team needs to make it more clear to players that all physical problems should be reported. The idea that reporting every ache and pain makes a player a pantywaist needs to be put in the scrap pile of history. Let the training staff and medical staff judge the best way to handle an injury. We need to get the most out of our players and this is a critical part of that.

I'm thinking a bit more about how physical problems are handled by teams and players. As I was saying before, HIPPA allows every person to keep all medical information confidential. Yet in sports the public and opposing teams always want to know all the details regarding a player's health. I'm beginning to come around to the idea that a team should share no information--none--regarding the physical status of its players other than placing them on one of the disabled lists. There's no reason to tell everyone that someone is having elbow problems or that someone has a virus or that someone burned himself ironing a shirt while wearing it. The manager should not have to tell anyone that the reason he chose not to use a player was because of a poor matchup or because of a sore arm or because he had beans stuck in his nose. Why tell information that no one else needs to know? It violates a player's right to medical privacy and it gives opponents an advantage.

I agree with you. But, unfortunately, gambling has become such a big part of the sport, that not having that information publicly available would result in chaos.

No sign of him yet in camp.

This is incorrect. Sano showed up a day or two early, did interviews in the clubhouse, and has been on the field (helping with fungo practice) for the past 2 days. He's there again today, wearing the boot. The reason we know about the boot is because he's in camp, wearing it, and we're watching him wear it.

I agree it's on Sano. But wasn't Baldelli down in the DR having margaritas with Sano after this happened? It sounds like reporters knew about this right after it happened. This was an injury that everyone knew about, but is just being addressed now. While it's on Sano, it also seems like the Twins medical staff could have flown down a few weeks ago to take a peek, rather than wait until February 20.

My guess is that everyone said "no big deal" but when the Twins medical staff took a look, they said "let's be extra careful with this now" and put him in a boot. I'm sure the big guy is already frustrated and us fans are also miffed. Not what we wanted at all.

On the plus side, nobody's talking about Buxton yet and that's probably good for Bux.

HIPPA protects certain doctor/patient details, but the above isn't true.

Teams in every single sport release information regarding on field sustained injuries.

In fact, in some leagues, notably the NFL, it's literally required.

I think the problem here is that Sano sustained the injury during a parade, per the tweet above.
Still, it's frustrating that the extent of the injury wasn't expressed fully right away.

Why, exactly? What would knowing this earlier do for us?

12 stitches?! He should’ve been in a boot since he got them. Why would somebody, pro athlete especially, wait a month to put their foot in a boot after they’ve gotten 12 stitches?

Hopefully he’s spending his days behind the batting cage reading pitches as they come out of the pitchers hand while talking with the hitting coaches.
