Well, an error ruined his save and I will give him some credit.   He limited the damage.   This is from a guy that did not like the Rodney signing at all.   My high school coach used to preach about not knowing how many runs it takes to win so to treat them all as important (all 8 were really important in the 4th).  Rodney kept it at a tie which maybe shouldn't result in a win for him but it ain't nothing.

I think Hildenberger still has a chance at being a decent pitcher, but not like he's doing it now. 

 

He reminds me of Tyler Duffey in that they were very unheralded prospects who got to the big leagues and had early success due to a bit of a gimmick. Being "just" a side-armer doesn't look like it's going to work going forward, he's going to have to get better at locating his pitches for sure and improve his movement and velocity if possible.

Yes, because you don't know if that will happen, or not. But, you do 100% know you have the bases loaded, and a great pitcher availalbe at that point. What happens later is 100% no relevant to the decision.

It's kind of crazy because if you just look at his numbers, they don't look that bad.  ERA under 4, reasonable WHIP, less than a hit per inning, etc.   It really doesn't look like he's been bad.  However, when you drill down and also give it the eyeball test, guys are taking healthy cuts against him that I didn't see last year.  When you haven't prevented a single inherited runner (7 out of 7) from scoring, you are letting your teammates down.  Those 7 runs are on someone else's stats.  I would like to see him get on track in AAA and give someone else the opportunity.

As I said elsewhere, you really don’t know if he’s the next Pat Neshek or the next Mike Nakamura. He’s earned some more rope based on last year, but his role needs to be swapped with Pressly getting higher leverage for now. Definitely skating on thin ice as far as remaining on the roster. Note: it really wouldn’t be a question of him staying rostered if Moya and Kinley were not on the roster. Hildenberger can provide length. He may be suited to mop up duty for now.

Wow, Hildy has allowed 7 of 7 inherited baserunners to score? That's ugly, no matter how you slice it.

 

I'm also in the "Don't blame Rodney" camp. He saves the game without that ridiculous throw from Dozier. No, it wasn't what we want, but the job would have been done.

 

I'm baffled at all the walks Twins pitchers are giving up this year. Starters, relievers, seems to be an epidemic.

I remember watching the 2001 Seattle-Cleveland game. Lou Piniella was managing the Mariners then. About halfway through the Cleveland comeback there was a camera shot of him in the dugout. You have the same argument going in multiple threads now. 

 

1. Nobody is suggesting Molitor should burn out Reed by throwing him 3 innings at a time.

 

2. Nobody is suggesting managers don't have a game plan.

 

That much is abundantly clear. I'm not sure how you're arriving at those conclusions. 

 

All anybody is advocating is that the best relief pitcher is used to get the most important outs during the game. Of course managers are thinking ahead, but all game plans are subject to change. Those late game situations you want to save a guy like Reed for wont exist if you can't get through the 6th. 

 

Andrew Miller was a big part of Cleveland's WS run, and he was used exactly how some have suggested Molitor use Reed.
