Disappointing effort so far offensively, but I guess 4 HRs/game is a bit much to expect every time out

1.  the amount of comments about the bunt on Twins Daily exceed the amount of comments by the players by a factor approaching 1000-1.

 

2.  the players involved understand why the bunt would raise eyebrows, but do nothing else.

 

3.  Gladden didn't actually defend the comments, but noted the Orioles, earlier in the 9th, did not hold a runner on first, indicating they believed the game to be over, and the Twins did not take the free base, indicating they accepted the same situation

 

4.  my guess is the veteran leadership on the Orioles let the rookie know it's not a big deal, but we don't play like that in the big leagues.

2.  The reason why we're commenting is that we're incredulous that a bunt in that situation would raise eyebrows.  Why exactly, is what happened not ok?

 

3.  The runner the Orioles did not hold on came with two outs.  Isn't it possible the Orioles decided it was better to play a true defense in an attempt to get the third out, rather than prevent a slightly higher chance of a stolen base?

 

4.  If it's not a big deal, then why do they care if things are done that way or not?  As Sisco accurately pointed out, the Orioles were able to load the bases for Schoop and Jones--two guys quite capable of hitting a grand slam and turning a blowout into a game, particularly against a guy around 100 pitches who might be tiring.  Is it not the number 9 hitters job to set the table for the big bats at the top of the order?  That's exactly what Sisco did, and if the O's clubhouse thinks playing smart and until the final out is recorded is something that shouldn't be done, they're in for a long year.

What a yawner. Big lead in the first on sloppy pitching, then... *crickets*

 

Oh, I don't know if it's quite that bad. It was pretty exhilarating to see Buxton strike out swinging at a fastball in the zone instead of a curveball in the dirt for a change.

The radio announcers just informed us that Pittsburgh has the second most bridges of any city in the world. I'm thinking that last one was a Bridge To Far for the Twinkies.

 

By contrast, Moran's shot would have had no problem clearing any of them.

According to the Holy Unwritten Rules, thou must score by hitting solo home runs only. Trying to get guys on base to score when down by this much is considered bush league.

 

...And then Dozier hits a solo HR as I type this. Nice.

3.  No, it's not possible, unless you can show me teams routinely don't hold a runner with 2 outs.  Teams will occasionally not hold a runner who isn't capable of stealing a base, or when the game is out of hand and both teams have called off the dogs.

 

4.  It's not a big deal in that there will be no retaliation, or anything like that.  But these teams have to play 162 game schedules, they are incredibly competitive people, and people's careers are on the line.  The idea that there aren't unwritten guidelines on how to conduct oneself over the course of 6 months of daily competition, so as to get everyone through the season as safely as possible, isn't realistic.
