Riverbrian Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 Maybe I'm crazy, but if Pressly is back to mediocre and not a disaster, a bullpen structure of Kintzler, Rogers, Duffey, Pressly, Boshers, a rotating long man, and a spot reserved for a rotating prospect (until one sticks) could be functional. Can't be worse. You maybe right...You may be crazy.
jimbo92107 Verified Member Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 Pressly has been a major disappointment, but could be the power arm we need. Twinkietown did an article on him last year which stated he has the best breaking pitches of anyone in the pen. Let's hope for a Berrios-type rebound. His stuff is that good.Yah, "best breaking pitches" shouldn't just mean the most RPM and sharpest bend. The best breaking pitches by far in the pen belong to Duffey, who can actually throw his curves to specific places, at different speeds and angles. Pressly is having a good day when he can get his benders somewhere in the zone. I'm pretty sure Pressly spent most of his time in AAA working on his arm slot and release point.

drjim Provisional Member Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 Actually, except for the game before his DL stint, and like the first game or two back, (or maybe I have those reversed?), he was pretty solid last year as well. 2016: 2-0/ 4.25 ERA/ 1.25 WHIP/ 36IP/ 35Hits/ 7BB 37SO/ .248AVGHe was certainly decent last year, I'm surprised he backed it up. But he certainly has earned a stay here.
Jham Verified Member Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 Why would it make more sense to DL Wimmers? Being optioned, he could be recalled if someone else went DL In next 10 days. If he was on the DL, he's out a minimum of 10 days.Well, then you DON'T call up Wimmers. Oh the heartbreak. We've got quite a few Wimmers already. This is obvious. If someone gets hurt, I'm guessing it's NOT Wimmers who gets the call... We could just call it the "Justin Haley", the way to expand your roster without limiting your options or exposing guys to waiver claims or FA. Biggest problem is probably tired bullpen arms. And it's June. At first I was thinking, "why option and not outright off the 40 man?" Then I thought, the way this season is going, we may need Wimmers yet... But probably not JUST Wimmers.... And if the biggest problem is tired arms, guys literally go to the DL for tired arms. And with the DL going to 10 days instead of 15, it seems that this would be a viable way of keeping a guy you may need later on the 40 man without clogging the roster (assuming another Wimmers-like pitcher will be "tired" 10 days later) a strong likelihood with this team.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 I might be the biggest Presley bobo around. But still, no Hildenberger? Busenitz? Curtiss? I mean it sure seemed like there was a pretty viable person to remove from the 40-man.

But I'd give Pressly another run before all of them.

Shaitan Verified Member Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 I missed it yesterday, but apparently Heston was sent down for Jorge Polanco's return too? Pitching staff down to 12.Interesting there isn't really a "long guy" right now, hopefully Good Kyle shows up tonight and renders that a non-issue. Is Haley hurt again?
yarnivek1972 Verified Member Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 Is Haley hurt again? He's suffering from im-not-good-enough-to-pitch-in-the-majors-itus. My guess is that the way it plays out is that Santiago will be the 26th man for the double header Saturday. Belisle is released after the double header. Gibson starts Sunday and gets demoted (or released). Haley replaces him Monday. So, yes, I guess I am expecting Nik Turley to show enough Friday against Cleveland to remain in the rotation ahead of Gibson.

Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 Are you suggesting he be put on the DL when he is not injured? There is a convoluted process for putting players on the DL that must be followed, and an equally convoluted process for removing them. The process is pretty much air tight. - Team doctor signs off on it- Second opinion doctor signs off on it, sometimes this is the player's doctor- League doctor signs off on it If the player, team, or league disputes what is going on, more doctors get involved. All teams + the commissioner get full visibility of each step. Follow this process again to remove the player from the DL....Do you have a link to something that shows this process? That seems like a lot of work, considering I've seen dl announcements as soon as 20 minutes after a game. If that process does exist, I'd guess those doctors are just rubber stamping everything. There is no way 3 separate doctors are giving legit exams within 20 minutes.

After that I imagine they will do a rehab assignment (and not rush him back from it, like last time): http://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/baseball/news/twins-justin-haley-gets-through-long-toss-tuesday/

Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted June 15, 2017 Posted June 15, 2017 It's all in the rule book.I downloaded the official rulebook of mlb, and there was no mention of this disabled list process. If you could direct me to the section that covers this, I will check again, but I've read it twice and don't see it anywhere in there. I also did some Google research, and there was no mention of any process even remotely similar to that, except for the new 7 day concussion DL, which must be signed off by the league medical office. Aside from that instance though, it appears that there is no such process, so long as the player doesn't dispute it. That is as I expected, since we've all seen numerous phantom dl stints.
Doomtints Verified Member Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 I downloaded the official rulebook of mlb, and there was no mention of this disabled list process. You're looking at the wrong rule book. Try looking at the CBA, which is where rules of this nature reside.
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 You're looking at the wrong rule book. Try looking at the CBA, which is where rules of this nature reside.I just did. I can't find the new CBA (signed in 2016, currently in effect) available to view online. Can you provide a link? I CAN find the previous CBA at mlbplayers.com. http://www.mlbplayers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=34000&ATCLID=211078089 It specifically states (pages 53-54) that only a team physician is needed to submit the necessary paperwork to the league for approval to place a player on a DL. Players may request, in writing, a second opinion, but this would not delay the original DL decision. Summaries of the new CBA published at the time it was signed include shortening the minimum DL stay from 15 to 10 days, but do not include, from what I can find, any indication of changes to the procedures to place a player on the DL. Bottom line: in the absence of contrary information, I don't think any additional medical review over and above the team physician, and approval by the commissioner's office, is required to place a player on the DL. It's very possible the separate concussion DL might be different, but again, without seeing the current CBA, I can't say for sure.
Doomtints Verified Member Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 I can't find the new CBA (signed in 2016, currently in effect) available to view online. Then I'm not sure about the basis of your dispute which appears to be very wordy considering you can't find anything. In any case, the one you are looking at states that second opinions are always required. I believe the old CBA said a second opinion must be filed within 30 or 45 days. This is always the case, even if the player was only on the DL for the minimum amount of time. Standard practice is for teams to get the second opinion at the first reasonable opportunity as it makes little sense to get a second opinion a month later. The commissioner's office keeps doctors on staff to review everything that comes through.

Dave The Dastardly Verified Member Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 To me Breslow's presence at the start of the season was Falvine hoping to spin him at the break for a prospect. Not sure now though...If so I think the new front office has been more focused on outdumbing themselves than actually improving the team. I could be wrong but I don't think there's a World Series for Clever Maneuvering. Sooner or later you have to put a few quality players on the field instead of has-beens and "prospects" on the trading block.
Doomtints Verified Member Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 Just provide a link, to support your assertions please. The last I heard, which was a month ago, the MLB was working on making it available online. I'm not mailing my hard copy to you. The new one is not much different from what you read in the old one, if you try to read it objectively instead of to try to prove an opinion.
mikelink45 Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 Wimmers was a poor call up, we have Curtiss, Busenitz, and others who deserve to be called up. I am looking at our dumpster diving for the year and came up with these WHIP figures: Wilk 1.86, Wimmers 2.12, Tepesch 4.20, and Belisle 1.65. What about ERA?: Starting with Breslow at number 10 we have 15 of this years pitchers with ERAs over 5. Batting average against - we have 8 with more than a .300 average. In all MLB - there are 26 players with a 300 or better qualified batting average. We have 13 pitchers allowing an OBP of over 350. and there are 59 qualified batters in both leagues that have attained that level. There are 163 qualified batters on the list http://minnesota.twins.mlb.com/stats/sortable.jsp?c_id=min#playerType=QUALIFIER&elem=%5Bobject+Object%5D&tab_level=child&click_text=Sortable+Player+hitting&game_type='R'&season=2017&season_type=ANY&league_code='MLB'§ionType=sp&statType=hitting&page=4&ts=1497642298798&team_id=&sortColumn=obp&sortOrder='desc'&extended=0 So how are we in first place? We have 6 pitchers who have carried the load for us with Berrios and Santana starting and Rogers, Duffey, Kinzler and Boshers leading the Bullpen. Time to quit with the marginal pickups and develop the next pitchers in the system. Whatever it costs in coaching it is the best investment.

USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 In any case, the one you are looking at states that second opinions are always required. C. Disabled ListApplication by a Club to the Commissioner to place a Player on theDisabled List shall be accompanied by a Standard Form of Diagnosis(see Attachment 5), a copy of which shall be provided to the Player andthe Association. The Standard Form of Diagnosis shall be completedby the Club physician and shall include, as a separate item, an estimatedtime period for recovery. The Club physician will also completeand submit the Standard Form of Diagnosis for recertification of aPlayer on the Disabled List at the date when he first becomes eligiblefor reinstatement to active status and then every fifteen days followingthe date upon which the Player first became eligible for reinstatement(except for Players placed on the 60-day Disabled List). In additionto the Standard Form of Diagnosis, the Office of the Commissionermay request that a Club provide additional information in support of aDisabled List placement before the application is approved by theCommissioner. The Club shall provide a copy of such additional informationto the Association. The above is from the 2012 CBA (the one I was looking at.) I can't find the part about "second opinion always required." Can you point me to it?
