I get the circumstances, but is Vargas ever going to get a real chance to show this team what he's got? My God...

Maybe he has shown what he's got and that's it.

I would argue he has, this is what he is. A fine placeholder in his role, but pretty expendable.

I would disagree that he has, but I'm far from sold in either direction. I'd still like to see him playing almost every day. I know he played more recently, but I don't really think he's been given much of a fair extended audition.

Unless someone else is pushing to replace him, he should still be up here as far as I'm concerned.

I know Vargas had a really rough outing today, but he's had some really nice games as of late! I don't like this move, but he'll be back soon.

Apparently two pitchers will be called up - my guess is one of Rucinski/Tepesch and Boshers. However, since they've DFA'd Wilk, maybe they could add Busenitz to the team. He's dealing in AAA (2.29 ERA with 11 K/9 and 3.7 BB).

They need two pitchers and they need them now. Haley can go on the semi-legitimate DL and they felt Vargas was the least necessary position player at the moment. I think Vargas will be back as soon as they can afford to back down to 12 pitchers.

I've been one of the biggest Vargas supporters and I still am.

However... I understand the move. We need a couple fresh arms and Vargas is the guy that we can send down without strings to get a 13th arm here.

I don't think it has anything to do with today's 0-8 game because that would ignore the 10 for 22 in the 6 games before that.

If anyone wants to focus on his 0-8 today... go ahead... but he's still 10 for his last 30 even with the 0-8.

This is just what the team needs to do right now and Vargas is the only option to go.

I'm not saying they should get rid of him. He has a role that he can play right now until a better option is found (and it is not all that easy to find a replacement). He has value while he makes the minimum and has an option. He can still provide production when used well.

I don't like that he is going down, but there really isn't a better option at the moment.

While I agree with this and it definitely makes sense, you've got to wonder how much of a leash Gibson has. I know schedule has an impact, but I'd say Gibson has done nothing to deserve getting called back up or to stay up.

I get what you're saying, and I don't disagree, but Gibson should also be discussed. Either move him to the pen or send him down. He's done nothing to warrant the call up or to remain with the big league squad.

I'm still very much on this team evaluating players this season rather than trying to win a division, right or wrong.

Now with both Wilk gone and Haley to the DL they will need someone who could eat innings.  Maybe both pitchers will be innings eaters.    So you are looking at Tepesch and someone else

BTW good to see the Twins being proactive.  TR would have sat on his rear end...

I think they would send Gibson down if they had a worthwhile replacement. There's just no one there at the moment.

If he keeps it up Gonsalves might get a look in August, but until then, not much. Romero ends up in the bullpen in my mind.

And I get that. I'm willing to roll with a Duffy spot start, or even a Tepesch start though. Bullpen arms are more plentiful than starters, no doubt. I'm in no way in favor of Duffy starting again, but I'm willing to go that route in the short term even though it would be a shorter start.

I understand that this probably does make the most sense for a team trying to complete, but I've had enough of older ineffective players eating opportunities of younger players for a team that should be finding out what they have. I see that happening here and I'm not a fan of it.

I'm just trying to think outside the box a bit.

So you are looking at Tepesch and someone else

Tepesch just got done stinking up the joint in Rochester on Friday. He consumed 75 pitches in just 3.1 innings, so he won't be available to eat any innings right away if he were called up. Find someone else, FalVine.

Trade Vargas and be done with it. His value is moderate right now and you probably could get a couple of prospects for him at least.

FWIW: Hurlbut, Busentiz, Wimmers pitched tonight  Turley, Hildenbergen, Boshers(*), Rucinski(*) Saturday.   Wheeler supposed to start tomorrow.

Baxendale, Chapman, Pino, Slegers, Tepesch(*), Tonkin also on the Rochester roster

(*) = 40 man spot.  One 40-man spot is open.

Jorge started today in Chattanooga, so he is out.  On the other hand, Rosario and Melotakis have been pitching well there (both on the 40-man roster.)

Pick your poison.

The team is on the horns of a dilemma. They really weren't expecting to compete this year, but they are.

I think I'd prefer to flame out with young prospects versus being on the edge of being competitive using aging players looking for one last grasp at the brass ring. I think you're right, the aging placeholder isn't cutting it. Move forward rather than stand pat.

I wonder if they may have to do down into AA to get an arm?

Using aging, ineffective players to try to compete was a hallmark of the old regime. If this team is to actually move forward, it needs to see what it does have in deserving younger players. If that means they flame out this season, so be it. You don't know what holes you need to fill long term unless you see what you already have.

You know, I get the veteran presence idea and I have no problem with it. But, like you say, filling the roster with such players, rather than 1 or two makes no sense.

Tepsch is on the minor league DL.

Rucinski is my guess for 1. Maybe Wheeler gets his turn in the big league rotation since Santiago pitched tonight?

Yeah, Melo and Rosario are intriguing options. But can you get a player out of Chattanooga and into the Twin Cities by morning?

BTW... Randy Rosario's last 4 outings: 9.1 Innings, 1 unearned run, 2 hits, 1 BB, 12 K   .....electric stuff this kid has.

My guess would be Wheeler takes Wilk's 40-man spot as one of the pitchers called up. Twins desperately need a long man in the pen, like...by tomorrow.

If it's relievers they want, I'd go with Boshers and Melotakis. Both are on the 40. Boshers is a veteran and has worked well before. Melotakis is one of the better prospects, and he's been pitching well in AA. If they need a starter, that's a little harder. I'd be tempted to try Slegers, since this is still a rebuilding year. Then I'd still bring up Melotakis. Tell the waitron to bring two cups of coffee!

Problem with Wheeler and Slegers is, neither is on the 40, so somebody would need to go off. Haley?

Wilk was DFA'd there's only 39

Wilk could still be added back to the 40-man roster within ten days of being DFAd, so he is a possibility.

Very true. If he passed waivers (which they may already have asked but don't have to do for another 4 or 5 days I believe), we'd be in the enviable position of adding a guy that literally no other team in either league had room for.

Boshers has to be one, he is the guy ho should be in the role of 26th man when needed.  No clue on the other, I guess it depends on what role the FO is looking for.  Replacing Haley?  Filling in for Haley?
