Perkins in MN for rehab

He was in the Twins' dugout last night.  Chad Graff added a little previously unreported detail in his writeup last night:  Perkins' fastball was up to 78 mph during ST, and "his velocity has not increased much".

Stick a fork in him.  (Not that this is any news...)

It's sad. He was quite good for a while. Im grateful that this injury prevents him from trying to push through it on a big league field, because we know the Twins would let him. No reason to not have him rehabbing and trying different things to see if something works. Worst case scenario, the medical staff learns something from him.

I don't think anyone (aside from the homerest of homers) wants to see Perkins back in a Twins uniform.  He'd make a good broadcaster or something, and he seems like a community service champion as well.  He had a good run, I wish him the best.

If he could get completely healthy and back to his old stuff, every Twins fan would want him back.  It just that there is a tiny chance that happens.

Maybe Kent Hrbek will get himself together too and DH next year?  Perkins was decent between 2011 - 2013.  That stuff isn't coming back, it went away a long time ago.   Enjoy the memories but let's pretend he was Dennis Eckersly.  He was a decent closer for a couple years on some bad teams.

At the risk of being snippy, everyone had this yesterday. Molitor announced it.

Sorry, did not see anyone other with access saying that Perkins maxed at 78 mph this Spring and his velocity has not improved, publicly before I read Graff's article.

Any tweets from yesterday you can point out?

While his recovery is a longshot, I don't really care what his fastball is when he isn't going 100% yet in rehab. That's kind of how rehab works.

He wasn't Dennis Eckersly, but he wasn't a chump either.

He had ERAs of 2.48 & 2.56 (FIP, 2.41 & 3.17) the two years before he was a 3 time All-Star. He would have been a better than 'decent' closer for any team in baseball.

And I don't understand how hoping the best for Perkins is comparable to bringing back a guy who retired from baseball over 20 years ago.

I look forward to Perkins in the broadcast booth, helping Torii Hunter figure out tough words.

Torii is so cringe worthy.  So, so bad.  Worse than Bert even.

Again, don't want to sound snippy. Just didn't feel it was that much of a scoop.

Torii started broadcasting 5 games ago, right out of the gate after retirement.  He's gonna struggle.  I like the guy, like what he has to say, and it doesn't bother me if he stumbles a bit.  He's a smart guy who knows the game.  I think LaTroy will be more polished, but that's just a guess.  I'm unsure when he'll appear but maybe it's later in the summer.

By the way, I love how we can bicker about broadcasters and semi-retired players like Perkins.  It's a good sign that our squabbles are so minor right now!

Bert started broadcasting 15-20 years ago.  10 years after retiring.  He stumbles.  Being on live television for 3-4 hours is an extremely difficult job.

It must be tough to give up your dream job, at such a young age, but he's done......just needs to accept it and move on.

Lotsa good memories and I thank him for that, but it's time to be serious.......................

Thanks for cutting off the part of my post that said there was a tiny chance of that happening.

Sure.  But that number 78 mph was not there.   It could had been 85 and would have been an issue, and Molitor's statement would still be valid.  But at 78, it is much more magnified.

That's where Graff's scoop was, unless someone else posted that number previously.   The media people with access hasve been hush hush regarding Perkins' velocity numbers for some reason (maybe because they were afraid about that access? I dunno.)

But, thankfully, someone indicated the severity of the problem.

Hell, his 2014 and 2015 numbers were better than most a good chunk of the Twins 2015.  You can't tell me if he was back to his 2014-2105, he wouldn't have some value in the middle of a bullpen (not the closer).

He's putting on an optimistic face, but he's done. Good for him to give it a try the last year of his deal.

He had a good run with the Twins. The last 2 years have been rough, but every pitcher breaks down in due time. Hopefully this last surgery took away the pain he was feeling, and he can live the rest of his life without worrying about his shoulder.

It would probably take an hour for me to get kicked off the TV for swearing. Most every broadcaster gets ripped on for one reason or another, and I would not want their job.

I don't think that 78 number was new reporting. I could be wrong.

It is :)

If it had been out, I would have been all over it.  Believe me ;)

Just to clarify, are you saying you never heard it was at 78 at all or that you haven't heard that it has not improved much from the 78 that was reported previously?

To me, i read your posts as you've never heard/read any velocity readings on him at any point. That's the way it came off at least.

I know Brian Murphy had the 78 in his article from 3/15 (probably others too) and you put it on your blog on 3/16. Rhett didn't post a velocity, but said Perkins was only throwing at 80% effort on sometime around 4/9.

If your post meant not knowing more recent velocities (more recent then March/early April) than I would probably agree that we haven't been given one that I can recall either. I feel like the more recent reports have just said effort level and things like not much improvement, but no specific velocity readings.
