Twins Part Ways with Ryan Vogelsong

If you were worried about Ryan Vogelsong landing the fifth starter job, you can breathe a sigh of relief. La Velle reported earlier today that the veteran's locker had been cleared out. And minutes ago, Mike Berardino confirmed with this tweet:

So it looks like the race for the final rotation spot is down to Berrios, Mejia, Duffey and Haley.

Mejia should get the spot IMO.

Berrios should get a few starts in AAA and get called up when one of Santiago, Hughes, Gibson inevtibaly pitches themselves out of the rotation due to injury (Hughes) or ineffectiveness (Santiago/Gibson)

I am beginning to hope that the Twins win the WS.*

*too much?

That would be the equivalent of me eating a whole French silk pie every day, instead of a small piece of apple pie. Heh. But hey ... whatever works, right?

Yes, including me. A little too much angst for something that was a long shot, at best.

It's all right. When we lose passion, all is lost.

Agreed, I have no interest in a path of quiet contentment. I want the ups and downs of life. while still remembering how to be happy even in the downs.

This is the second best gift the Twins could give me for my birthday. Thanks, Derek and Thad!

The best being? I mean, your BDAY is in March, so they can't give you a meaningful win in a game...

I was hoping for a teary-eyed, but with sideburns created by God him/herself, Mauer to walk to a podium and announce that for the good of his hamstrings and the future of the organization that he has loved since childhood, that he'd be retiring immediately.

Sure, we'd all miss his defense, and opposing pitchers would miss the opportunity to groove a belt-high fastball down the middle for strike one, but the Target Field infield worms would be so much safer.

Alas, I'll have to settle for the veteran-y arm o' Vogelsong being cast aside in favor of a youthful pitcher on the Opening Day roster.

Think of all that angst. I was personally hoping it would continue for several more days.

I don't know if it was that long of a shot, had Vogelsong performed acceptably this spring. He obviously didn't and pretty much forced this decision, no matter what the Twins were once planning. (Hopefully Mejia helped force the decision too!)

If he had anything left he also wouldn't have been a late offseason minor league signing.

This is a hopefully a positive sign that the Terry Ryan era is definitely over.  Positions should go to those who have earned them.

Yet if I recall, you were actually making the case for him to start the season in the rotation, correct? :)

Not exactly.

I laid out a scenario where he might make the rotation (all the young guys implode) or thought the Twins might keep him as a long man, but I wanted no part of him. I pretty consistently pushed back against people who were worried he would make it.

Didn't he sign before Breslow, who is pretty much a lock for the roster? I am pretty sure Vogelsong had a chance here but blew it.

Sure he had a chance in the sense the 5th starter spot isn't locked in after the May injury, but he "blew it" because he has nothing to offer as a mlb starter.

Good luck to Ryan Vogelsong. Maybe the White Sox could use another starter.

Breslow's story is great, but seven walks in six innings is not good. Hope he goes to AAA.

Actually, as a Twins fan, I'm going to miss Chris Sale pitching for the White Sox. For whatever reason, the Twins pretty much owned Sale.

Seems like Breslow is going to make it by default. I can't imagine he'll have an especially long leash, could see Melatokis relatively quickly, maybe Jay later in the season.
